Peter Joseph Thelen

Peter Joseph Thelen, age 76 of the Town of Baileys Harbor, passed away on Thursday, March 20, 2025.      He was born on March 10, 1949, to the late John and Elizabeth (Candioto) Thelen in Chicago.      Pete joined the U.S. Army in 1966, and served in Germany with the financial corp. Pete made some life-long friends during that time, and they are still friends to this day. Thanks to Arthur, Mike, John, and Frank. Pete had a very special gift of making friends and keeping track of them.       Pete and I met at Good Olde Days at Winfield, Illinois in 1977. For me it was love at first sight, but Pete was there with a date. Some weeks later we met again at a friend's wedding and had a chance to dance, and we've been together ever since.      Throughout the years, many of you have had a chance to hear Pete’s music, watch him perform, play music with him, and for the frequent readers of the Pulse, a chance to get to know some of Pete’s perspectives and his special sense of humor. Pete had a true love of the written and spoken word, sharing his ideas and talents and always willing to listen and learn. He never lost sight of the importance of our freedom of expression.      So here’s to you Pete - the love of my life, my BFF, and someone who taught me the true meaning of kindness.      Through the many chapters of our lives we have been blessed with a beautiful and loving family and a multitude of the most amazing friends - some still here on Earth and some jamming the Blues up there in the Great Beyond.      Back in June of 2020 Pete came home from his first extensive hospital stay and because of COVID we were unable to see him during that two week stay. When he returned home he was fully motivated to start an organization to raise money to help others, and get it to people in need and important causes. Hence, the start of Fountain of Fellowship.      Love you Pete and miss you every second!      Pete is survived by me, Roberta Thelen, his wife of 44  years,  sons Jason (Jaime), Ben (Silvana), daughters Katherine (Dave), Jackie (Shane), grandchildren Ethan, Evan, Zoe, Jackson, Maxwell and Carolina, siblings Carol, Mary and Bob (Angie), and many other nieces, nephews, and extended family.      Please no flowers or gifts. Instead consider a donation to the organization Pete started or to another charity of your choice to help others. There will be a Celebration of Pete's Life in the future.      Expressions of sympathy, memories, and photos of Pete may be shared with his family through his tribute page at www.caspersonfuneralhome.com

She married Frank Jerabek on August 5, 1950, and then Ken Skarvan on August 7, 2010. Recently, we asked Mom, “When you were growing up, what did you wish for your life?” MaMa responded, “I wanted to get married and have children, a family.” Family was the center of Mom’s life, and Mom has been the loving center of this family. The brothers say, “Mom never raised her voice to us…and we may have deserved a shout out more than once.” We learned about chickens, cattle, gardening, sharing, forgiving, praying, hoping, and taking care of one another from our mother. God blessed us with the best mother in the world. Mom’s favorite hobbies were in the kitchen. She canned shelves of applesauce, pears, tomatoes, peaches, and pickles. She had recipes that made her famous. Her apple squares, sugar cookies, and monster cookies. At Anna’s House, Mom’s favorite hobby was connecting with family & friends on her iPad. Mom was a CNA at Kewaunee Nursing home in Kewaunee. After that she used these nursing skills when Frank and Carol Jerabek opened the first CBRF in Kewaunee County, Meadow Park. Carol’s death is mourned by her children, Mary Wyman (Rob), Dan Jerabek (Wendy), Terry Jerabek (Lynn), Susan Chilson (Mike), Bill Jerabek (Teri), Dave Jerabek (Sue), Steve Jerabek (Nancy), Tom Jerabek (Kim), and Lori Cash (Dave). 24 grandchildren, 44 great-grandchildren, and one great great-grandchild. Carloyn Busse

Carolyn Sue Busse (Williams), age 77, was known as Mom to Ruann Larson (Daryl) and Jason Busse (Jessi); Carol Sue to her husband of 54 years Brad (who died in 2018); Grandma to Derek, Austin, Marshall, Emily, Jordan, Wesley and Great Grandma to Kade; sister to Barb, Mike, Stu, Matt and Missy; daughter to Oliver and Betty; Aunt Carol to many nieces and nephews; and Mrs. Busse to many Sevastopol School students who rode her school bus. On March 21, 2025, Carolyn Busse crossed safely in front of the bus, smiled and waved to all who remain and walked into her Heavenly home to rejoin her beloved husband. Her departure from this life sent her immediately into the arms of the God who created her. As a young woman she accepted Jesus as her personal Savior. Her early life with husband Brad took her from their home in Illinois over 50 years ago to beautiful Door County. After one vacation stay on Lake Michigan, Carolyn decided it was the best place to raise their two kids and Brad made it happen. They never looked back. Carolyn had gas in her veins, as Brad would say, so Brad taught her how to drive and they spent many hours together behind the wheel. They got involved in racing stock cars. Carolyn drove powder puff racing at Door County Speedway. When younger they drove snowmobiles to fish fries, traveled across the Country in 18-wheelers delivering goods, and of course the Busses drove school buses together. Carolyn’s bus needed wooden blocks on the pedals so she could reach because she was a bit short for the old school buses. Brad was the fun bus driver and Carolyn the strict one. But every parent and school administrator loved her because she transported the kids safely every single day for 32 years. She never hesitated to pull the bus over and waited as long as necessary until the students were ready to listen. Carolyn never met a stranger. She always smiled, talked a lot, and never sat down. She always had something to do or somewhere to go. She participated in numerous activities and side hustles in addition to raising two kids. She bowled twice per week for years for the Piggly Wiggly achieving several perfect 300 games, got her hands dirty picking berries, cherries, and working the fruit stand for Zahn’s Green Thumb, opened the former Cherry Factory Arts and Crafts store and dabbled in every craft known, cleaned hotel rooms with her mother and daughter at the Church Hill Inn, arranged flowers for Maas Florist, attained Presidents Club selling Avon for decades, worked for a senior living apartment complex, cheered on her grandkids at races and dance recitals, threw darts and played bingo. After retirement from bus driving, she worked the front desk of Glidden Lodge making connections with guests from all over the Country recommending all the greatness Door County has to offer. She made cute, whimsical, and beautiful cards for those she loved and cared for under the pen name CardMakerGrandma. Brad and Carolyn were married for 54 years. After his death Carolyn had to learn how to navigate life without him. She struggled living life without her best friend. Her favorite local bands Glas Hamr and Modern Day Drifters helped fill the empty space in her calendar. She was grateful for great music, hugs, and pictures with band members. Those connections brought joy back into her life for the past six years until her death. As a tribute to Carolyn, the woman who never met a stranger, smiled, and said Hi to everyone, her kids and grandkids will host a Life Celebration party with a date TBD and an announcement on Facebook. Carolyn will rest with the love of her life, Brad, next to a Busse Bus headstone in Mulkeytown, IL the place of her birth. Forbes Funeral Home is serving the family. “He who lives and believes in Jesus, shall never die" John 11:26

A four-year scholarship then took her to Ball State Teachers College, now Ball State University, where she majored in Music and English, with a piano major. In 1996, Donita and Roy began spending part of each winter in Green Valley, AZ. Robert "Bob" Berkley

Robert Wesley Berkley died of natural causes at age 87 on Tuesday, March 4, 2025 in Algoma, Wisconsin. A loving, compassionate, intelligent, gregarious, and quick-witted man, Bob has left a conspicuous void in the lives of all who had the privilege of knowing and loving him. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, friend to many, pioneer in the road-building materials industry, and servant of God's kingdom.

EARLY LIFE AND EDUCATION

Bob was born in St. Louis, Missouri. While he was very young, his family moved to a more rural setting nestled among southeast Missouri's Ozark Mountains. Their modest home was situated on the side of Buford Mountain, the state's second-highest elevation. Bob spent much of his youth rambling over the old, rounded mountain's rocks and through its forest. He developed a fascination with the stones and minerals shaping the landscape, collecting geodes and other specimens on his adventures. He carried this interest into young adulthood, earning a bachelor's degree in geology from the University of Missouri, Columbia.

Growing up in the area of Buford Mountain and the adjacent Arcadia Valley, Bob developed a passion for nature that he pursued throughout his life. Bird?watching was a particular passion, and later in life he led numerous family outings with binoculars in hand, eager to spot his favorites or discover a new species for his life list. Likewise, he enjoyed fishing - the thrill of a tug on his line never diminishing over time.

LIFE IN ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI

While attending Ironton High School in Arcadia Valley, Bob met and fell in love with Rosalie Bay. They later wed, moved to St. Louis County, and experienced more than 62 years of growth and memories together until Rosalie's death in 2021. They were blessed with two sons, Kent and David. Bob and Rosalie shared a love of literature and poetry, including Rosalie's own published and unpublished works. Their welcoming and warm home was filled with art and antiques that they joyfully collected together, including paintings and photography created by Bob. They took many long walks in and around St. Louis County, frequenting local parks and nature reserves. They traveled regularly to enjoy family vacations and time by themselves in Door County, Wisconsin. On several occasions, they journeyed southwest to take in the desert hues of Santa Fe, New Mexico, and the bold landscapes of Sedona, Arizona.

Bob and Rosalie were devoted disciples of Jesus Christ and were actively engaged in their faith community at Kirkwood Baptist Church.

The couple worked to advance fair housing in their community. In the late 1960s and 1970s, they went door to door, distributing leaflets to advocate for equal access to housing for people of all races - at a time when such rights were not universally recognized.

They also dedicated themselves to helping families rebuild and heal from the disease of alcoholism. This commitment arose out of Bob's recognition in 1974 of his addiction to alcohol. He began attending meetings of Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), ultimately celebrating 50 years of sobriety in April 2024. Through AA and its affiliated program, Al-Anon, Bob and Rosalie supported and sponsored hundreds of alcoholics and their affected families and friends through the steps of recovery.

Before Rosalie's passing in February 2021, Bob selflessly cared for her as she was confined to a wheelchair for six years following a major heart attack and multiple strokes.

LATER YEARS IN WISCONSIN

In November 2021, Bob moved from St. Louis County to Algoma, Wisconsin, to be closer to his beloved firstborn son, Kent, and to help care for him as he battled cancer in nearby Sturgeon Bay. After Kent's death in November 2022, Bob remained in Algoma to build on the relationships he had already established in the community and to stay close both to Kent's grieving family and to son David and his family living in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, about 90 miles away.

Bob regularly attended Algoma United Methodist Church and, in late 2022, met fellow congregant Susan Sandstrom. What began as a friendship blossomed into love, and they married in December 2023. Bob's courtship of and marriage to Sue gave him a new breath of life after a dark and difficult chapter rife with the challenges of caregiving, loss, and loneliness.

Bob and Sue ministered to the Algoma community, establishing a weekly free soup luncheon for seniors, sponsored by the church. They also hosted numerous meals for local families, particularly those facing economic challenges, focusing on the children - engaging them, listening to them, playing games, and providing a memorable meal experience. Furthermore, Bob and Sue actively promoted the work of Alcoholics Anonymous and Al-Anon throughout Kewaunee and Door Counties.

In 2024, as Bob encountered health challenges precipitated by two severe bouts of COVID and associated cardio-pulmonary complications, Sue and his family members cared for him tirelessly. However, even amid numerous medical appointments and treatments, Bob and Sue celebrated their newfound love, enjoyed their combined families, attended community events, and obsessively checked in on a pair of bald eagles and their hatchlings that they had spotted in an enormous nest near Algoma.

PROFESSIONAL ACHIEVEMENTS

Bob's boundless energy, combined with his ability to focus intensively and develop creative solutions to vexing problems, served him well in his professional life. He applied his degree in geology and an engineering mindset to the field of pavement science and production. Over the years, he worked his way up the ranks of several companies that produced asphalt and modified (polymer) asphalt and that paved roads with those materials. Serving in positions including founder, president, and CEO, Bob played a pivotal role in the construction of roads, bridges, and highways spanning Missouri and connecting states across the Midwest. As part of this work, Bob partnered with talented, hand-picked chemists to invent more resilient, economical, and sustainable polymer asphalts that remain in use today. Many who travel the highways of Missouri and the Midwest today will drive on road surfaces developed under Bob's leadership.

In 1992, Bob founded the Association of Modified Asphalt Producers (AMAP), bringing together key players in a fledgling industry to ensure the continued adoption and growth of the product category that they were pioneering. Today, AMAP continues to thrive as an influential industry association.

A RENAISSANCE MAN

Bob was a Renaissance man who excelled in both analytical and creative pursuits. In his profession, he mastered the left-brain disciplines of chemistry, science, physics, and mathematics. Yet, he also exercised the right brain through a deep appreciation for the arts - he was an accomplished painter, an avid reader of poetry and fiction, and a lover of music.

Even more impressive than his intellect, however, were his heart and spirit. He loved Jesus, immersing himself in scripture and living his beliefs, often quoting Matthew 25:34-40. He cherished his family and friends, good food, probing conversation, the St. Louis Cardinals, and Missouri Tigers football and basketball. He delighted in laughter, exhibiting an ever-present sense of humor that ranged from campy and sophomoric to nuanced and sophisticated.

Bob's warmth and charisma made him especially gifted at connecting with young people. He fostered very close relationships with all of his grandchildren, and he created a special place in his heart for his two great-granddaughters.

Bob Berkley is greatly missed by many who loved him, especially his family.

David Brian Hemmerich

David Brian Hemmerich, age 70 of Sturgeon Bay, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, February 22, 2025, at his home. He was born on April 13, 1954, in Chicago and grew up in Glen Ellyn Illinois, and went to school at Glenbard West School. This is where he met his good friend Jeffrey kauffman. They raced go-carts together. For Dave this sparked his love for motorcycles and the rest was history. He established a fondness for Goldwing's, in which he purchased several throughout the years, and eventually transferred into a love for corvettes. Dave drove semi for a while before coming to Door County. When he settled down in Baileys Harbor, he established his job at the Door County Highway Department. His ability to maintain the highway department vehicles contributed to his love for auto mechanics, which continued on by working on his own vehicles and bikes. Dave moved from Baileys Harbor to Sturgeon Bay in 2000 with his daughter Danielle. Upon this move, Dave bought his Honda Goldwing and traveled many miles up to Washington Island, and all over the upper peninsula of Michigan with Danielle. Dave loved to be outdoors, camping, or spending the weekend on the Island working with Damon on his 1939 ford pick up. Dave also loved to take his daughter sailing on his uncle Ernesto's sailboat up in Ellison Bay. But don't let that fool you, Dave was an extremely hard worker and loved nothing more than to start his next project. Once Dave retired, he continued his passion for cars and going to car shows. This is where he met his dear friend Eli, who he would spend his last couple of years with going skiing and to car shows. If they weren't at home watching a football game or working on a project, they were up riding around the peninsula with Sarah, Dave's newest Morkie he received after his Morkie Jazzie passed away in 2019. Anyone who knew Dave, knew he was a very particular man who always had a place for things and was noteworthy meticulous. He was a dedicated father to his daughter Danielle and to Maribelle his Corvette. He was a loving and caring friend to many and would give the shirt off of his back to help you out. David is survived by his daughter, Danielle Hemmerich; grandchildren, Serenity, Malachi, and Damon; foster dad, Richard Guill; uncle, Ernesto Anderson; niece, Beatriz Anderson; great nephew, Diego; and great niece, Alexandra. He was preceded in death by his biological parents; foster mother, Roberta Guill; brother, Gordon Anderson; and nephew, Damon Anderson. A celebration of life is being planned at a later date. Expressions of sympathy, memories, and photos of David may be shared with his family through his tribute page at www.HuehnsFuneralHome.com.

Gloria C. Rex

Gloria C. Rex, 89, of Bailey's Harbor passed away early Friday, February 21st, at St. Vincent's Hospital. Gloria was a woman of great strength and heart, of tested faith and enduring love, of grit and good nature. From her youth to her death, Gloria's nurturing spirit was evident. She cared for her father when he became crippled with rheumatoid arthritis; she made daily sacrifices for her children; she then cared for her husband Charles when he was crippled from injuries at the shipyard; she devoted her days to loving her dogs and watching each tree along her walking paths grow up. Gloria was known as "firecracker" in her youth for her red hair and unassuming yet impactful spirit. She was always on the shy side but she had a way of exploding hearts when one got to know her. Her impact whispered of her humility, self-sacrifice, and nonjudgmental reflection. Out of high school, Gloria attended Algoma's teacher's college, called "Normal School" back then. For two years, she rode with Lester Newman, a former 6th grade teacher at Gibraltar. Though her grades were strong, she was told she was too shy to become a teacher. She then desired to join the WAVES, the women's branch of the Navy, but was called home to help care for her father. Gloria married Charles Rex October 5, 1963, and had three children. She preferred to work with her hands, doing laundry at Scand and assisting her husband with his side jobs in lawn care and cutting firewood. Digging in the dirt to plant and harvest her garden made her feel connected to her beloved nature. Gloria took up running in her mid-40's, an effort to do something for herself that was hers alone. She slowly built up endurance by challenging herself to run to this telephone pole, then that one, making her way up to daily 2-mile runs. She then, despite her nerves, gathered up the courage to enter the Bailey's Harbor 4th of July race, a 6-mile race- a distance she had never before attempted. Her one goal that day was to not stop. She set her speed and kept pace the whole way. The result: First Place in her age group and setting a new record! This story seems to sum up her life motto. When the going got tough, keep moving. Always a walker, following in the footsteps of her own mother, she continued to walk several times a day with her dogs. She pioneered off-road trails: through swamps, up hills, deep into the forest. She walked without fear, finding enjoyment in the "road less traveled" and took pleasure in the joy of her dogs running free. May her gentle yet persevering spirit move on with her children Chaz (spouse Jessie), Phillip, Katherine (spouse Rich), her dog Charley, her sister Jane, her brother Dan (spouse Marilyn), her step-grandchildren Richard (spouse Jess), Leah (partner Paul), Yelena (widow of Cale), five step great grandchildren (Zack, Matthew, Hunter, Maverick, Wyatt), numerous nieces and nephews, and a lifetime of connections from local dog parks, exercise groups, and churches. Gloria was first greeted in heaven by her Savior Jesus who led the welcoming committee of her husband Charles; her previous dogs Nicky, Hobbes, Malibu, Sam, Bailey, and Charley I; her parents Ruth and Edward; her brothers David, Leland, Billy, and Edward; her son-in-law Rob; her step grandson Cale; and so many others who touched her life and she touched theirs. We take comfort in the vision of her running free without pain, wearing comfortable shorts with her red curls bouncing in the wind as a kennel of dogs romps at her feet, her smile unreserved, her eyes twinkling with pure joy. The family is grateful for the people the Lord put in place to care for her in her final days: DCMH ER team, the ambulance crew, Julia and Anthony at St. Vincent's as well as the team of caregivers there including the chaplain and Hospice, Nicole at Huehn's, Pastor Scharrig at Immanuel Lutheran of Baileys Harbor, and all those who have shared our grief and offered support. To honor Gloria's wishes, a private family graveside service will be held Mother's Day weekend May 10th. After the service, the family then invites extended family and friends to gather and informally share memories at the Baileys Harbor Ballpark, a place Gloria frequented with her dogs. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Captain Bailey's Dog Park in her name. Expressions of sympathy, memories, and photos of Gloria may be shared with her family through her tribute page at www.CaspersonFuneralHome.com.
