Paul C. Wallace, Jr

Paul Charles Wallace, Jr., passed away unexpectedly in an accident on Saturday, October 26, 2024, in Forestville, WI. Paul was born on October 31, 1973, in Appleton, WI, to Paul and Catherine (Bungert) Wallace. They resided on a small dairy farm in Forest Junction (Brillion area) until 1978. At that time, they relocated to the current farm where Paul and his family reside today. Paul’s love of farming started at an early age. You could say it was in his blood as he was a 4th generation dairy farmer – born and raised on a dairy farm. He always enjoyed working with cattle and being on the farm. Throughout high school, Paul was active in FFA, he loved showing his cattle at the Kewaunee County Fair, and enjoyed playing varsity football and basketball at Algoma High School. Paul graduated from Algoma High School in 1992. He then attended Lakeshore Technical College, earning a certificate in Dairy Herd Management. Before returning to work on the family dairy, he worked for a neighbor. On April 18, 1998, Paul married Corrina (Buhr) at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Algoma. They resided in Algoma while he continued to build his herd of dairy cattle. They were blessed with two children, Aidan and Emersyn. They were truly his pride and joy, he adored them. He loved to spend time with them and cheer them on in all they did. In 2013 he purchased a portion of the farm and took over full operation. In 2017, Paul and his family moved to the dairy farm. After experiencing a barn fire in 2022, Paul made the difficult decision, led by his faith in God, to end the dairy portion of his farming. Though he continued to raise beef cattle as a hobby. Paul was blessed to be able to continue living his passion in farming by working for the Fenendael family at EL-NA Farms. He took so much pride in working there, valued the friendships he continued to grow, and enjoyed his new adventure to the fullest. With more time on his hands he also took advantage of traveling more, spending more time with those he cherished the most. It was readily seen in how much bigger his smile became and the joy he shared. He will be remembered for his love of the outdoors and all things farming, but more importantly for his kindness, generosity, quiet demeanor, and gentleness. He was welcomed into heaven by his father-in-law, Charles Buhr, maternal grandparents Clarence and Anita Bungert, paternal grandparents John and Josephine Wallace, aunts Mary Guy and Judith Haack, and special cousin, Shane Clark. Paul is survived by his wife, Corrina, his children Aidan and Emersyn, parents Paul and Catherine, mother and father-in law Charles and Jenny Hucek, sister Kim Davister (Tim Craanen), brother-in-law Casey Buhr (Kristen Knudtson), grandmother-in-law Violet Hafeman, nephews and nieces: Connor Buhr, Morgan (Kenny) Racine-goddaughter, Bryce (special friend Gracie) Davister, Graham Davister, Bailey Davister, Lucy Knudtson, goddaughter Kayna Finley, many aunts, uncles, cousins, and of course his special friends that have become his chosen family. Visitation will take place on Friday, November 1, 2024, from 3:00 pm – 7:00 pm at Kinnard Funeral & Cremation Services – Algoma, with a prayer service at 7:00 pm. Visitation will continue on Saturday morning , November 2, 2024 from 9:00 – 11:00 am at St. Paul Lutheran Church Algoma, with Funeral Service following at 11:00 am with Pastor John Moll officiating. Burial to follow in the Evergreen Cemetery. Online condolences can be made at KinnardFCS.com. The Wallace family would like to extend their thanks to the Algoma Fire and Rescue, Casco-Lincoln EMS first responders, the Kewaunee County Sheriff’s Department, the Charles family, Booker Prokash, and the multitude of family and friends that assisted during our time of need. Further, they are grateful for the love and support they have been receiving from family, friends, and the community.

He LOVED driving fast and putting on a show for others. His pride and joy was his 2002 Dale Earnhart Monte Carlo. In his later years, he would tell everyone it went 160 miles per hour, and no one could catch him. He was very proud of it and made sure his children also loved cars. Bill was a dedicated family man and was very proud of his children and their families. He was dedicated to his son and daughter throughout their childhood and helping them make their dreams come true. He traveled far and wide to bring them to all their competitions every weekend. He wanted the best for his children from baseball, softball, gymnastics, dancing lessons, and fixing cars up with his son. He also loved his stepchildren and their families. Becoming a grandpa (PaPa) was one of his most treasured moments. He made sure he was at their birthdays, christenings, graduations, and later their weddings. His eyes always sparkled for them until the end. Bill moved back to Missouri in 2017 and was able to stay there until February 2022 when he moved up to Washington Island to live close to his daughter due to medical reasons. Dennis Roy Phillips

Denny Phillips, 73, of Egg Harbor, passed away peacefully on Monday, Oct. 21. He was surrounded by family in his final days and hours. His selfless care for them, his great personality, his strong sense of right and wrong, and his playfulness and quick wit were with him until the end. So, too, was his lifelong determination to do things his own way: Given seven to 10 days to live after he was no longer able to receive dialysis, he made it to day 11. Dennis Roy Phillips was born June 13, 1951 in St. Charles, Ill., to LeRoy and Jane (Larson) Phillips. He grew up in Geneva, Ill., and graduated from Geneva High School. His father worked for a foundry and then for the post office; his mother worked for the bank. Denny graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Stout in 1973 with a degree in hotel and restaurant management, having played on the hockey team and served as a resident assistant. While he was growing up, his family took annual summer vacations to Lake Content Resort in St. Germain, Wis. He returned there for two summers by himself while in high school, living with and working for the family who owned the resort. After college, during which he spent a summer with other Stout students managing a resort in Michigan, he began a 45-year career in hospitality. His work included managing Pheasant Run Lodge in St. Charles, overseeing the regional hotel chains Midway Motor Lodges and Dillon Inn, and running The Rushes Resort in Baileys Harbor, where he accepted a job as general manager in 1993 and stayed for 25 years. During his time at The Rushes, he also managed Little Sweden Resort in Fish Creek from its inception in 1998 until 2014. On June 16, 1990, he was united in marriage to Cynthia (Cindy) Patterson Phillips in Crystal Lake, Ill. They built a beautiful life together for 34 years, including raising their two children, Andrew and Samantha. Denny was an avid boater and loved time spent on the water on the Chain O’ Lakes (while living in Antioch, Ill.), on Lake Geneva (while living in Williams Bay, Wis.) and, most recently, on the bay of Green Bay and the Great Lakes. He also was a skilled water-skier. He was an extraordinarily smart businessman, willing to share his knowledge with anyone who asked and unafraid to be honest when he thought something was being done wrong (just ask anyone who presented financial reports to the Village of Egg Harbor’s harbor committee, on which he served for the past several years). He was skilled in construction and used those skills in overseeing the construction of numerous hotels and resort units, as well as in building the home his family has lived in for almost 30 years. He loved to play and to watch golf; in retirement, he enjoyed working at The Alpine Golf Course in Egg Harbor. Among his happiest times were those spent captaining his boat, being with family, and watching the Packers. He was a people person and, most of all, a devoted husband, a loving and supportive father, and a proud grandfather. His kindness, calm and reassuring presence, and generosity of spirit will be deeply missed by his family, his friends and so many who knew him. Denny was preceded in death by his parents, LeRoy and Jane, and his sister, Kathleen Bentley. He is survived by his wife, Cindy Phillips, son Andrew Phillips, daughter Samantha (Davi) Lacerda, and grandchildren Benjamin and Sarah Lacerda. He also is survived by his parents-in-law, William and Joanne Patterson; by his sisters- and brothers-in-law, Valerie and Jim Brachmann and Amy and Pete Zakoian; and by several nieces and nephews. His family wishes to thank the outstanding staff members at Bellin Hospital, including nurses Olivia, Michong and Kaitlyn, Dr. Al Shahrouri, chaplain Diane, and Dr. Bowman and his entire team. His family also wishes to thank the staff at DaVita Dialysis Clinic in Sturgeon Bay and Dr. Neu for their care for the past three years. A celebration of his life will be held on Sunday, Dec. 29, from 4-7 pm at Burton’s on the Green Restaurant at the Alpine Golf Course Clubhouse, 7670 Horseshoe Bay Road, Egg Harbor. The celebration will be an open house; please bring your favorite stories and memories of Denny to share. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Polycystic Kidney Disease Foundation would be appreciated: https://pkdcure.org. Huehns Funeral Home in Sturgeon Bay is assisting the Phillips family. Expressions of sympathy, memories, and photos of Denny may be shared with his family through his tribute page at www.huehnsfuneralhome.com.

Judith Marie Tolentino (nee Dietrich)

Judith Marie Tolentino, daughter of her Heavenly Father, age 78, of Egg Harbor, WI, was carried safely to her eternal home on Wednesday morning, October 9, 2024. She was born June 27, 1946, in Milwaukee, the daughter of the late Richard and Lillian (Buechner) Dietrich. God adopted her into his loved and saved family through the miracle of Holy Baptism, and in eighth grade, she confirmed her faith. Judy graduated from Whitnall High School in Greenfield, WI, in 1964 and then attended beauty school in Milwaukee. She worked as a licensed cosmetologist in Hales Corners for 20 years. She then obtained her associate’s degree in interior design and worked under her mother at Dietrich Interiors. From there, she worked at Northwestern Mutual in the on-site restaurants, often putting her culinary skills to work in the executive dining rooms. While working professionally, Judy was also a successful independent seller for Karla Jordan Jewelry. On October 2, 1976, God brought Judy and John Ramon Tolentino together in marriage at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Muskego. The couple retired to Door County full-time in 2004, where they joined Zion Lutheran Church in West Jacksonport. Judy found joy still working as a certified nursing assistant at Scandia Village. Later, she moved to the salon until she finally retired. Judy loved her connection to Door County through her mother's homestead on the Buechner farm and her time spent there—in her summers as a youth and then as a permanent resident. She truly loved the peace and beauty and always thanked God for His grace and the blessing of living here. Judy was the love of John’s life. They cherished their home in Door County and found great pleasure in exploring its beauty. Together, they enjoyed local restaurants, drives along the lake, and visiting their children and grandchildren. Judy treasured being John’s wife, a mother to their four children, and grandmother to their eight grandchildren. She prayed for them daily and was a regular spiritual encouragement in their faith lives. We will always remember Judy as someone who fiercely loved her family and friends, was a talented cook, had a gift for hospitality, and an eye for beauty. But more than all of these, she loved Jesus and was eagerly awaiting her life with him in heaven. Judy is survived by her loving husband of 48 years, John; children, Tony Lesnick of Waukesha, TJ (Tina) Lesnick of Eagle River, Gina (Matt) Zimplemann of Manitowoc, and Rick (Erica) Tolentino of Wind Lake; grandchildren, Anthony Lesnick, Nathan Lesnick, Michael Zimplemann, Travis Lesnick, Lily Zimplemann, Charline Tolentino, Emma Zimplemann, and Alexandra Tolentino; brother, John (Ann Buth) Dietrich; and nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, daughter-in-law, Andrea Lesnick, and brother-in-law, Antonio Tolentino. “Do not let your hearts be troubled…if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am” (John 14:1,3). Judy’s victory in heaven will be celebrated with a funeral service on Saturday, October 19, 2024, at 11:00 am at Zion Ev. Lutheran Church in West Jacksonport. Her Christian burial will take place in the church cemetery, followed by a light lunch in the fellowship hall. Richard Allen Zak

Richard Allen Zak was born on December 5, 1947 to Kenneth Valentine Zak and Marguerite Alice (Jorns) Zak, and passed away on September 24, 2024 with his loving wife, Karen Johnson-Zak by his side. If you knew Rick, you would know that he would hate even the idea of sharing personal information, but we wanted to share some about his life. Rick grew up in Baileys Harbor and attended Baileys Harbor Elementary School and Gibraltar High School. He graduated in 1966 with Karen. Though they did not date in high school, they were physics lab partners. Rick attended University of Wisconsin-Stout after graduation and due to the long time it would take to drive that distance, he obtained his pilot’s license and soon he and a friend would occasionally make the trip in a small airplane. While taking semester off school to earn money, Rick was drafted into the U.S. Army where he served honorably in Vietnam. He was wounded in 1968 and was sent home to recuperate at the VA hospital in Colorado Springs, CO. When he recovered from his injuries, he finished his degree at Stout and moved to Boulder, CO where he received his MBA at University of Colorado Boulder. He then worked many years for Martin Marietta where he was a plant manager. It was there that he took up biking and skiing – both lifelong hobbies and then later interests. In the early 1980’s he returned home to Door County where, being a third-generation stone mason, he began his own stone masonry business. Shortly thereafter, he ran into Karen and the rest, as they say, was history. One of their favorite things to do was to take long road trips across the (primarily western) U.S., as far away as Alaska. He liked to say, “let’s go west until our hats float.” Rick’s stone masonry skills were excellent and sought-after. He had an eye for choosing the natural stone to fit perfectly together with another one and he often found unique shapes that resembled sailboats, wine bottles, and even one of the state of Wisconsin. He also found interesting fossils and stones – many of us have received these keepsakes. He built and donated the stonework for the fireplace found in the lobby of the Door County Auditorium. After Rick and Karen retired, they took more trips – even venturing east, to visit their grandsons, Ryan and Dylan, and of course, their parents. All four Watsons loved coming home to Door County to visit Meme and Grandpa, mostly in the summers. Meme and Grandpa found perfect climbing trees (supplemented with ladders to get to the best branches), built them a fort in the pine forest and strategically placed deer horns on walking paths for them both to “discover.” Not to mention being paid in peanut M&Ms to do very minor tasks. He is survived by his wife, Karen of Sister Bay; daughter, Stacey (Angus) Watson of Falls Church, VA; grandsons, Ryan and Dylan Watson of Falls Church, VA; brother, Daniel (Pam) Zak of Seymour, WI; sister, Sandra (William) Koepsel of Sun Prairie, WI; brother-in-law, Conrad (Linda) Johnson of Sister Bay; nephews, Mathew (Melanie) Johnson of Woodbury, MN and Nicholas Johnson of Sister Bay; and nieces, Erika Johnson of Fairfax, VA and Becky (Jason) Stewart of Oostburg, WI. He was preceded in death by his parents; his parents-in-law, Oscar Henry Johnson and Carolyn Grace (Lettie) Johnson; brother and sister-in-law, Corwin Oscar Johnson and Cynthia Ann (Paradise) Johnson. Per Rick’s wishes, there will be no memorial service. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the Wisconsin Humane Society- Door County Campus (https://www.wihumane.org/contact/door-county-campus). Casperson Funeral Home & Cremation Services is assisting the Zak family. Expressions of sympathy and memories of Rick may be shared with his family through his tribute page at www.CaspersonFuneralHome.com.

Mary Lou Karnopp

Mary Lou Karnopp (née Barbiaux), 72, of Luxemburg, passed away peacefully on October 1st, 2024, surrounded by her loving family, after a long and courageous battle with illness. She was born on September 13th, 1952, at St. Vincent Hospital in Green Bay to Jonas and Lucille (Lemens) Barbiaux. Mary Lou was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend to many. She married the love of her life, Arlin Karnopp on October 31st, 1970, and together they raised five children: Candy (Steve Hanmann), Angie (Mike Peterson), Kate (Bruce Kinjerski), Rob (Nicole Schultz), and Dusty (Danielle Brey). Family was Mary Lou’s greatest joy, and she was a proud grandmother to Madison (Jordan Jadin), Emma, Lydia, Sophie, Bella, Abby, Ryker, Ainsley, Flora, and Vivienne. She also delighted in her role as great-grandmother to Hayes. Mary Lou was also known as "Grandma" to a special little girl named Avery, who held a very important place in her heart. Mary Lou had a heart for caregiving, a passion she lived out through her career as a registered nurse. She served as the night supervisor at Bornemann’s Nursing Home and later transitioned to home health care with Clarity Care before retiring. Even in retirement, Mary Lou continued to share her expertise by instructing Med Pass and Trachea Care classes. Her nurturing spirit and generous nature touched many lives throughout her career and beyond. An avid sports fan, Mary Lou especially enjoyed following Kewaunee Athletics and cheering on her favorite football teams. However, her greatest passion was spending time with her family, attending her grandchildren’s events, and creating lasting memories with those she loved most. Mary Lou’s faith was the cornerstone of her life. Baptized on September 21st, 1952, she had her first communion on April 24th, 1960, and was confirmed on May 26th, 1963. She spent over 30 years teaching Sunday school at St. Paul Lutheran Church and was an active member of the flower and altar guilds, the Funeral Lunch Committee, and the Quilting Committee. Alongside her husband, she also served as the church custodian for many years. As her mobility declined in recent years, her husband, Arlin, lovingly took care of her at home, ensuring she remained surrounded by the comfort of family. In her final act of selflessness, Mary Lou made the generous choice of being a donor, ensuring that countless others will have the opportunity for better lives through her gift. Her legacy of compassion and care will continue to touch lives even after her passing. Mary Lou will be remembered as a kind, loving, and selfless woman who gave endlessly to others. Her strength, intelligence, and sense of humor brought joy and comfort to everyone who knew her. The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to Mary’s Cardiology Team, Physical Therapy Team, and the 2nd Floor Care Team at Bellin for the excellent care and compassion Mary Lou received in her final days. She was preceded in death by her parents, Jonas and Lucille Barbiaux; her in-laws, Elton & Vernis Karnopp; her brother Joseph; her daughter Angie; her brother-in-laws, Merle & Dean; her niece Jennifer; her nephew Kraig; and several aunts, uncles, and cousins. Howard Renard

Howard Julian Renard, 95, formerly of Algoma, passed away on September 30, 2024, in Luxemburg. He was born October 17, 1928, in the Town of Union to Fred and Louise (Fabry) Renard. He married Angela Bouche on August 5, 1947, in Rosiere. Together they raised seven children and enjoyed 72 years of marriage. They were a great team both in business and in family life. His family will never forget what an amazing caregiver Howard was to his wife as her health failed. As a young teen, Howard made cheese for Fairland Cheese Factory in Namur and earned his cheese making license as a very young man. After working in the cheese making industry for several years, he established his own business, Renard’s Cheese in 1961. In 1966, he helped his son Gary and Bonnie acquire the Cloverleaf Dairy. In the mid 70’s, they merged their two businesses, and both opened their own retail cheese stores. Later, his son Brian joined his father and brother in the family business. Working with his sons was one of Howard’s greatest joys. As time went on, Howard, as a natural entrepreneur, took on a role as head cheese broker while Gary and Brian focused on the craft of cheese making. The business eventually developed a very successful brand and distribution network nationwide. For many years, Howard served as vice president of the Northeastern Wisconsin Cheese Makers Association. Howard was recognized by the Cheesemakers Association, along with his son, Gary, for the life-time achievement award which was a rare situation for a father and son. He also helped found the Packerland Whey Plant in Luxemburg. Howard loved playing cards, and fishing with his family. He enjoyed traveling with his wife around the country and to Europe. Howard worked hard and played hard. He had an unconditional love for his family and treasured all the family time and activities. Howard will always be remembered as a hardworking, honest, genuine, and very generous man. His kindness and generosity had a lasting impact on numerous employees and customers. His work was a passion to him, not a job.
