Terrence L. Brandner

Terrence (Terry, Terry-ific) L. Brandner transitioned to the next plane peacefully in his sleep early on Monday morning, November 24, 2025 at the Pete and Jelaine Horton Center Skilled Nursing Facility in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin. He was diagnosed with stage 4 renal cancer in February, 2023 and although he outlived the predictions and survived 2 heart surgeries, his body had just had enough. Terry was born on December 4, 1949 in Mobridge, South Dakota to Albertus (Bert) and Elvera (Holzworth) Brandner. He arrived home in Herreid in the arms of his mother as his father drove their tractor up their long, snow-covered driveway. As the oldest of three children, Terry often tells the story of driving the tractor from age 5 or 6 with a block of wood on the gas so he could reach the pedal. He worked hard all his life. Terry attended Herreid School and graduated as valedictorian. He excelled in sports - football, basketball and baseball. He received his BS from Northern State University and also attended graduate school at the University of Wisconsin at Eau Claire. His knowledge of science, nature, astronomy, weather, insects, birds was truly amazing. He loved playing Pinochle with family and especially his brothers. And that usually involved Gin and Tonics with Terry saying to Tim "Hey Tim, mix me one". And Tim did. And a very knowledgeable sports fan he was - Packers, Colts, Celtics, Bucks, Brewers, etc. He worked in the telecommunications field for decades starting with Strandell Engineering, moving to GoldenWest Telecommunications in Wall, South Dakota as a right of way specialist. He specialized in working with the Native tribal elders building trust and respect as he negotiated the right of way permits to bring telecommunications to the reservations in western South Dakota. Terry and Gay met on eHarmony in 2008 and after 38 months and 62,480 miles of long distance meetings from Wall to Door County, he retired to Door County in 2012. Terry and Gay were married (we called it a senior shotgun wedding due to his cancer diagnosis) on September 30, 2023 at the Hitching Post in Sturgeon Bay. As his wife, writing this obituary, I want to say that Terry was my sunshine and my rock. Every day we were together, we laughed. We often said that we saved each other. We were very grateful for our love. And I always told him I would not stop talking to him after he died, and I haven't. He is survived by his wife, Gay Pustaver, her son Colin Pustaver-Olson, his brothers Tom Brandner (Laurie) and Tim Brandner (Shelly), step-daughter Andrea Shadduck, her children and grandchildren, as well as many cousins, nieces and nephews with whom he shares a rich history and much love and laughter. Our circle of friends in Door County and Illinois have also been a huge support for us and each of my friends who met Terry immediately took to him. Terry was preceded in death by his parents, many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends and his step-grandson, Jamie Saylor. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, December 6, 2025 at Huehns Funeral Home in Sturgeon Bay with visitation from 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm and service from 4:00 pm-5:00 pm. We want to thank Green Bay Oncology, St. Vincent's Hospital, St Mary's Hospital, Unity Hospice and the DCMC Horton Skilled Nursing Facility for their care of Terry in his last weeks. Eugene "Geno" Haines

Eugene “Geno” Thomas Haines - our beloved father, grandfather, son, brother, friend, and veteran - passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family on Monday, November 24, 2025. Eugene was born on May 31, 1948, to Russel and Gertrude (Wester) Haines. He was the oldest of four boys - including Jim, Gary, and Kevin. A lifelong resident of Sturgeon Bay and proud “Mainlander” (West Sider), he often joked that residents of the East Side were “Islanders”. As a little boy he was a proud Boy Scout with his mom being a den leader. He attended Corpus Christi Catholic School and was a graduate of Sturgeon Bay High School Class of 1966. Geno was rightfully proud of his military service, having served in the 501st Armored Field Artillery Battalion and was part of the 1st Armored Division in Germany. He later served as a member of the Nike Hercules surface to air nuclear missile crew, where he got his beginnings in nuclear security. He went on to work at the Kewaunee Nuclear Power Plant - proudly serving as an armed security officer for over 30 years. Eugene was married to Mary Jo Rasmusson on August 23, 1975 in Sturgeon Bay. They had 3 children together and shared 20 years of marriage. Eugene will be most remembered for his endlessly positive attitude and generous spirit. He donated to individuals and charities alike - wherever he felt he could help. He was quick to help those in need and never sought recognition, many times doing these selfless acts anonymously. Eugene was a lifelong car and motorcycle restoration enthusiast. He loved working on projects, often undertaking many simultaneously. He was most proud of his 1970 Ford Mustang Fastback that he owned for over 50 years. He restored it multiple times and drag raced it at Wisconsin International Raceway back in the day. He was a fixture at local car shows where he would cheerfully share his passions with friends and strangers alike, regularly taking home a trophy or two in recognition of his skill. He could talk about cars and parts with people for hours on end. He always said he loved anything with wheels. He regularly spent his mornings sipping coffee on his porch, enjoying the quiet spot in his backyard while listening to and watching nature. He often listened to the birds chirp and loved to identify the different species of birds by their sound. He also loved to feed the backyard critters that he endearingly called “vermin”. Dogs held a special place in Eugene’s heart - he loved to spoil family pets with treats and affection. He loved his simple life. Eugene is survived by his daughter Miranda (John-Eric) Andersson, sons Matthew (Jamie) Haines, Mark (Michelle) Haines, and four grandchildren; Chloe, Nolan, Norah, and Hartley. He is also survived by his brothers Jim Haines and Kevin (Melissa) Haines, and nieces and nephews. Eugene was preceded in death by his brother Gary, his father Russel and his mother Gertrude. He loved his family more than any “thing” in this world. Family and friends are invited to join us in remembering Eugene at Forbes Funeral Home on Friday, November 28, from 4-7 pm. Funeral services with military honors will be held at Corpus Christi Catholic Church on Saturday, November 29, at 11 am. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to one of Geno’s favorite charities including The Salvation Army, Tunnel to Towers Foundation, Wounded Warrior Project, and Door CANcer. A very special thank you to the VA and also to Green Bay Oncology including Dr. Jaslowski, Eric, Brittany and the many nurses and staff for their care through the years.

David Barttz

Dave Bartz, 90, of Sturgeon Bay, passed away peacefully on November 13, 2025, at the Horton Skilled Nursing Facility in Sturgeon Bay, WI surrounded by family.

He was born to Harold W Bartz and Erma (Schuettpelz) Bartz on June 16, 1935, in Suring, Wisconsin. Graduating from Suring High School in 1953, Dave then received a double chemistry and physics education degree from University of Wisconsin – Stevens Point and a master’s from University of Wisconsin – Superior. He taught chemistry and physics at the Sturgeon Bay High School for 43 years, coaching the award-winning Science Team and supporting many other extracurricular activities.

Dave and his future wife, Rachael, met in September 1957 as newly hired teachers. Their friendship developed over after school coffees and chaperoning school activities, and they were married on July 23, 1960. Dave was a passionate teacher demanding high expectations from his students, supporting their academic goals for college and beyond. He retired from the High School in 1995 but continued teaching biochemistry for the Northeast Technical College in Sturgeon Bay adult nursing programs until he was 80. He said,” I want to be sure I have people to take care of me when I need them!” and he did.

Beyond teaching, Dave had a passion for hunting, fishing, World War II airplanes, Sheepshead, John Deer tractors, the Cubs, the Packers and brandy Manhattans! The calendar year was marked with ice fishing in the winter, blue gills and muskies in the spring/summer, and grouse and deer hunting in the fall. His massive collection of maps documented his favorite lakes and hunting trails in Northern Wisconsin particularly Oconto County and Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest. He attended many EAA events to see his favorite planes and read every WWII history he could get his hands on. Dave worked with local and state agencies for sustainable uses of natural resources for hunting, fishing, and logging of timberland. He corresponded with state agencies in the protection of wildlife for over 60 years.

Following retirement, he became active in the founding of Friends of Potawatomi State Park, chairing committees involving trail maintenance, painting park buildings, and hosting candle-lit ski nights. He was an active member of the Green Bay Ruffed Grouse Society and was recognized nationally for organizing and leading 49 Habitat Work Days- not quite reaching his personal goal of 50! Dave was an active parishioner of Corpus Christi Church and School (now St. John Bosco.) He served as Council President for both and served on many committees on fundraising, playground development, and other building projects and events. But most of all, Dave was a devoted family member, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend.

He was there for swimming/track/skiing/softball events, Boy Scouts, band/choir/musical performances, and anything else his four children were involved with! The arrival of grandchildren brought him great joy - they too had to learn how to bait their fishing line and walk the forest trails. Family was of the utmost importance to Dave – he remained close with his siblings and extended family throughout his life. Dave always enjoyed a good cocktail party – hosting friends and family and making sure everyone was having a good time was one of his greatest pleasures!

David will be missed greatly by his wife Rachael; sisters Althea Korte, Myrna (and Bob) Eslinger and brother Harold (and MaryAnn) Bartz; daughters Beth Bartz, Laurie (and Mark) Thiede, Amy (and Phillip) Taylor and son Paul Bartz; grandchildren Hannah (and Adam) Fulwiler, Abby Thiede, Kyra Peterson, Eliza Peterson, and Ian Bartz; and great-grandchildren Hollis Heimbecher, Hale Heimbecher, and Boden Fulwiler. He was preceded in death by his parents Erma and Harold Bartz, sister Kay Bartz, and brother-in-law Loren Korte.

The family would like to extend its gratitude to the staff at the Horton Skilled Nursing Facility in Sturgeon Bay who brought laughter and comfort to the final years of his life.

A celebration of life will be held at 2:00 pm on Friday, Dec. 5, 2025, at Forbes Funeral Home (www.forbesfuneralhome.com) followed by a cocktail party (as he would have wanted it!) where all can raise a Manhattan toast and share stories. Visitation will from 12:00 noon until the time of service. Memorials in Dave’s honor may be directed to Potawatomi State Park and the Ruffed Grouse Society.

Estelle Catherine Richter

Estelle Catherine Richter, 82, formerly of Washington Island, passed away Wednesday evening, November 12, 2025 at Cardinal Ridge CBRF in Sturgeon Bay where she resided the past seven years.

She was born with her twin, Adele, on Washington Island on August 4, 1943 to Arni Jacob Richter and Mary Catherine (Cornell) Richter. Estelle and Adele grew up with two sisters, Carol and Mary Jo. Estelle graduated from Washington Island High School and went on to study education at the University of Wisconsin at Oshkosh where she graduated and earned a Wisconsin Teaching Certificate. Her teaching career included elementary grades at Washington Island Schools, and then in Alaska, initially in Golovin and then later, Little Diomede Island.

Estelle loved photography and colorful art. She was always interested in Russian literature and culture, and that was, in part, a reason for her choosing to teach native children on a tiny island in the Bering Sea, from which the Russian island of Big Diomede, as well as the Russian mainland on clear days, could be seen. During her time teaching in Alaska, Estelle became a member of the Bahá’í faith. While there, health restricted her ability to work and travel. She exhibited a special affinity for those who were downtrodden, who faced adversity in their lives through birth and circumstances.

Estelle will be missed by her sisters, Carol Lemon of Sister Bay and Mary Jo (Richard) Purinton of Washington Island; and many nieces and nephews (and their children). She was preceded in death by her parents; her twin sister, Adele; brother-in-law, Robert Lemon; and other relatives.

Estelle was laid to rest in the Town of Washington Cemetery with a graveside service on Friday, November 14, 2025. Estelle’s family would like to thank the staffs of Cardinal Ridge in Sturgeon Bay as well as Unity Hospice for their kind and compassionate care. Arrangements were entrusted with Casperson Funeral Home in Sister Bay.

Expressions of sympathy, memories, and photos of Estelle may be shared with her family through her tribute page at www.CaspersonFuneralHome.com.

Wanda Jean Walker

Wanda Walker, of Kokomo, Indiana, went into the arms of our Lord and Savior on October 30th, 2025. Wanda was born to Chet and Diane Walker in Colorado Springs. After their move to Oak Creek, WI, Wanda was joined by the births of her brother, Kim, and sister Pam. Wanda met her future husband, Dave, before graduating from Oak Creek High School. After Dave graduated from college, Wanda and Dave married on August 2, 1980. They traveled to Germany for their honeymoon. Wanda became a stay-at-home mother when her son, William, was born. William soon had a baby sister Diana. Her life was challenged when her husband’s company transferred him to the Kokomo facility. She left her Milwaukee friends and family to move to Kokomo. Once William and Diana were in school, Wanda became a cafeteria cook; she only recently retired from Howard Elementary after more than 20 years. Wanda supported her daughter’s love of gymnastics as well as her children’s Northwestern High School marching band (she was a pit crew Mom!). She travelled to Los Angeles and later Dallas to support her children’s Northwestern High School Robotics’ international competitions. Wanda also contributed to our community. She shared her gift of growing bonsai trees with three clubs: the Bonsai Club of Lafayette (which she helped establish in 1994), the Fort Wayne Bonsai Club and the Michiana Bonsai Study. She had only recently retired from the West Lafayette Global Fest, where she displayed her bonsai trees. Wanda was also secretary for the Kokomo Friends of the Library. She was an actress for the Kokomo Historic Society’s Seiberling Wedding Reenactment, where she performed in 1893 period costume. Additionally, to express her faith in God, Wanda taught religious education for twenty years at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church. Wanda loved to travel. Among her journeys, she witnessed solar eclipses in Winnipeg and La Paz Mexico, in Kentucky and Indianapolis. She visited 45 states; many times camping. Wanda invited family on her journeys which enriched our experiences. Family was everything to Wanda. While in Europe, Wanda fell in love with the swans swimming in Lake Constance. That love was amplified with the porcelain swans in King Ludwig’s castle. This love is reflected in her swan collection. Around this time, Wanda began crocheting afghan blankets for family members; later on she was able to donate some of her artistic work. Wanda will leave a void in our lives; yet, we are so enriched with the experience of her love. Funeral services will be 12:00 noon on Friday, Nov. 21, 2025, at the Forbes Funeral Home in Sturgeon Bay. Burial will be at Bayside Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday from 10:00 am until the time of service.
