Lois Rice

Age is simply the number of years friends and family were able to enjoy this amazing woman. Lois Marshall Rice was born on June 3, 1918 to Vera and Ray Marshall in Whitewater, WI and died at the age of 105 on May 26, 2024, at the Pete and Jelaine Horton Center Skilled Nursing Facility in Sturgeon Bay, WI. She was proceeded in death by her four siblings, Jack, Sibyl, Beulah and David; as well as her husband, John; and her son, Jeffrey Rice. On July 28, 1940, she married John Rice and they resided in Milwaukee, WI for 65 years before moving to Door County in 1998. After John died in 1999, Lois continued to reside at the Meadows Independent Apartments of Scandia Village. Due to deteriorating health, on November 21, 2022, she moved to the Horton Center in Sturgeon Bay. She enjoyed a long professional career, beginning in public relations/sales development, for a rapidly growing media corporation during the earliest days of television. A transitional period in broadcast media……open to innovation. Years later, opting to work in a non-commercial field, she was appointed Public Relations/Fund Development Director for the Milwaukee Art Museum. A final appointment was as Development Director/Assistant to the President of Alverno College. Lois expressed particular pride in that 12-year association and appreciation for all that she learned from the brilliant new President, Joel Read and the dedicated faculty who, together, had developed an internationally recognized method of teaching Liberal Arts. She served on a wide variety of boards of public and private organizations. She strongly believed in the value of volunteering throughout her life and encouraged others to do the same. She was a member of the Sister Bay Moravian Church and was very grateful for their prayers and concern. She was a very active resident at Scandia Village Retirement Community for over 20 years. She enjoyed volunteering, serving on committees and writing the early SCAND Newsletter. During this time, she made many friends and enjoyed her interactions with staff and community members. Her love of books was obvious as was her love of good writing. If you were a recipient of one of her letters or notes, you were blessed. She was well-spoken on many subjects and could engage in spirited conversation, especially politics. She was a life-long learner and enjoyed classes into her 100’s. She enjoyed the New York Times Sunday crossword puzzles and could complete them with ease. Her natural beauty combined with her attention to art, style and appearance earned her frequent compliments. She is survived by grandchildren and great grandchildren, of whom she was very proud, Morgan (Kristi) Rice and Lauren (Justin) Daoust [and their children Allison and Andrew Daoust]. Also, Morgan and Lauren’s mother, Bev Knutson and her husband, Rick Bochek. Lois wanted it to be noted that Bev had been her “daughter” for over 50 years and that she was very thankful for all the things that Rick fixed in her apartment. She is further survived by nieces and nephews. The family would like to express gratitude for all her caregivers at Scandia Village, the Horton Center and Unity Hospice over the years. In addition, thanks to her faithful friends for their frequent visits, flowers and cards. Lois was very appreciative of being remembered. At Lois’s request, there will be no public services. She will be interred next to her husband at Wisconsin Memorial Park in Milwaukee. Donations in Lois’s memory would be appreciated to Sister Bay Moravian Church (10924 Old Stage Road, Sister Bay, WI 54234) or Unity Hospice (2366 Oak Ridge Circle, De Pere, WI 54115). Linda graduated from Fenger High School in Chicago before attending Illinois State Teachers College. On October 5, 1963, she married her childhood sweetheart, William J. Linda L. Kelly

Linda L. Kelly, 81 years of Ellison Bay passed away on Mother’s Day, Sunday, May 12, 2024 at Scandia Village in Sister Bay with husband Bill, son Kevin and daughter Erin at her side. She was born May 29, 1942 in Chicago, IL the daughter of the late Lindsey and Lillian (Pierson) Dickinson. Linda graduated from Fanger High School in Chicago before attending Illinois State Teachers College. On October 5, 1963, she married her childhood sweetheart, William J. Kelly at Holy Family Catholic Church in Chicago. They have known each other and been together for 76 years. It really was love at first sight. They were blessed with seven children. Linda had worked for Grundy County Nursing Home in Illinois. They vacationed in Door County for many years and in 1998 moved to Ellison Bay permanently. Linda had worked for Newport State Park before the Berch Tree in Ellison Bay, and Simply Scandinavian in Gills Rock. But her greatest accomplishment was the care and love she showed with her efforts in rescuing animals, particularly young racoons. She loved nature and it loved her back as the young racoons would mature and have babies of their own and return each spring to show her their babies. Linda was a very good photographer and documented these visits every year. With her love of nature and animals aside, Linda truly loved her children and the growing number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren throughout the years. Surviving family include her husband, William of Ellison Bay; six children, William Jr. (Terri) of Coal City, IL, Brian (Diane) of TN, Michael (Tina) of Morris, IL, Jack (Lorrie) of Lake Arrowhead, CA, Erin (Adam) Kotowski of Channahon, IL, Kevin of Ellison Bay; 14 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. David Charles

David J. Charles, 72, Luxemburg, David went to the arms of his dad and mom on Sunday, May 12, 2024. He was born on September 6, 1951, to the late Wallace and Geraldine (Bader) Charles, and he was their only son. He was a 1969 graduate of Luxemburg-Casco High School. He lived in Duvall his whole life and later in life took over the home farm. David was born a farmer and died a farmer. He was very proud of what he did. David farmed with his dad until Wallace’s passing and then with his son Dennis. When he gave up the cows, he kept running the land and also went into trucking. He would haul farm equipment for the local implements and go nationwide. David would leave early Monday morning and get home late Thursday or sometime Friday. When it was time to get the fieldwork done, David would take off from trucking to get it all done. He would do the same when it was time to get the crops off. He was his own boss so he could do what he wanted. Pat was with him in his later years of farming and trucking and helped him as much as she could. She enjoyed being by his side no matter what he was doing. When David had his heart attack in fall of 2018, he was told he would have to slow down. For those that know David, know how that went over. He’s lucky he had the winter months to recuperate. David gave up trucking but still worked on the farm. He would still help out the local implements if they needed something picked up that day. In 2020 David ended up back in the hospital with blood clots in his lungs. Again, he got told to slow down. In spring of 2023 he ended up back in the hospital for colon cancer. They said they got it all. Again, he was told he would have to slow down. This time he listened to the doctors. He still did his work, it just took him longer to get it done. Every time he was in the hospital the nurses would ask him what he liked to do for a hobby. He always said I’m a farmer, that’s a 24/7 job, but the thing he liked doing best was being in the combine. David kept telling Pat she was the best thing that happened to him in a long time and how happy he was she came into his life. She went out on the road with him while he was still trucking and helped him on the farm. David decided it was time to make his high school sweetheart his wife. In June of 2022 with family and some special friends, they all watched while Dennis (David’s son) performed the ceremony. When David got his driver’s license that started his driving career. He would pick up a truck load of canned milk at farmers, bring to the Duvall Cheese Factory every morning before he went to school. He did that until he graduated. He ran his own fix it shop on the farm and he would go to the farmers if needed. Once he retired from driving over the road he still kept busy. He would help Aaron Guilette driving semi when it was harvest time, helped John Malcore hauling cattle and he helped Turk at the tractor pulls. David is survived by his loving wife, Pat; his daughter, Lynn; son, Dennis and Lena; three grandchildren, Cody (Jess) McIntyre, Brandi (Jacob) Charles, Cole (Emily) Charles; and three great-grands, Evelynn and Corbin McIntyre, and Isla Charles. Pat’s children and their families, Tracy and Rollie, Tim and Connie, Troy and Jennifer, Terry, Claudia, and Joe, Crystal and Chad; 13 grandchildren and 13 great-grands. David’s sister, Debbie and John; sister-in-law, Linda and Larry; brothers-in-law, Alan, James, Pete and Sharon; and many nephews and nieces. David was preceded in death by his parents, Wallace and Geraldine; in-laws, Ed and Leona Derenne; sisters-in-law, Janet, Judy, Karen, and Bonnie; and three of Pat’s grandchildren. A visitation will be held on Saturday, May 18, 2024, from 1-3 pm at Kinnard Funeral & Cremation Services – Casco. A memorial service will take place at 3:00 pm with Pat Ratajczyk. Online Condolence messages may be shared at KinnardFCS.com. Pat wants to say a special “Thank You” to Dennis, Codi, Luke, Jesse, Issac, Tony, Scott, and Jerry for all the times you came and helped him out. You were just a call away and that means more to her than you will ever know. Thank you for everything you did. Pat, Lynn, Dennis and Lena would like to thank Brenda from Moments Hospice for being the amazing nurse that she is. She helped all of us getting through a rough time.
