Larry Renier

Larry Renier, 88, formerly of Brussels (Misiere) and New Franken, passed away peacefully with family at his side on January 29, 2026, at Pinecrest Village in Sturgeon Bay, surrounded by love and prayers.

He was born August 17, 1937, to Edward and Grace (Herlache) Renier, the youngest of three children. At the age of six, Larry went to live with his Godparents, Harris and Laura (Renier) Vandertie just down the road, as they couldn't have children and loved him like their own. Thus, he was blessed with two sets of loving parents.

Always a trickster as a young man, Larry played jokes on his siblings, cousins, and even shot his mother Grace in the behind with a BB-gun on a dare, a story even she laughed about in later years. He drove fast cars, enjoyed outdoor adventures, and loved the Packers, even attending the Ice Bowl.

He married Diane Baudhuin on June 14, 1958, at St. Mary of the Snows Catholic Church in Namur and together they had three wonderful girls. I

n his younger years, Larry worked with Uncle Harris at V & R Plumbing and Heating. But his real passion was for farming, and he spent his life running the family farm. A lifelong Belgian farmer in Misiere, Larry was a simple and humble man. He and his family milked cows and tended the land. Larry's life was defined by faith, and he prayed for all his family and friends, right til the end. He was active in the Knights of Columbus.

An avid outdoorsman all his life, Larry loved hunting, fishing, walks in the woods, and reading his outdoor magazines. He always reveled in the hunting and fishing stories of his family.

He is survived by his daughter Pam (Bruce) Alberts, grand-daughter Kristin (Kevin Schneider), son-in-law Marty Baudhuin and grandchildren Matt (Laura LaPlante) Baudhuin, Nick (Bethany) Baudhuin, and Kimberly (Matt) Gleason. He is further survived by great-grandchildren, Delaney and Tess Baudhuin; Grant, Noah, and Eden Baudhuin; and Oliver & Sofia Gleason. Also surviving are his sister, Janice Lacrosse, son-in law Dave Riedy, and God-children Randy LaCrosse and Roxanne Spiering, along with numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife, middle daughter Kim Riedy, youngest daughter Lisa Baudhuin, parents, in-laws Raymond & Jennie (Derenne) Baudhuin, brother and sister-in-law Roy (Lucille) Renier, and brother-in-law Norman LaCrosse.

Without a doubt, he is now also reunited with the many dogs he loved over the years as well, most recently his late faithful companion Buddy.

Though Larry's life was filled with tragedy, losing two of three daughters and his wife, he never lost his faith, always praying for his family & friends. We know he'll continue guiding us from above, and scouting out heaven's best hunting and fishing spots.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am Wednesday, February 4th, 2026, at St. Louis Catholic Church in Dyckesville, WI. Visitation will be at the church from 9:30 am until the time of service. Following the service, he will be laid to rest at the Shrine of the Good Shepard Mausoleum in Green Bay.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests one of three wishes: masses in his name, a tree be planted in his honor, or donations given in his name to the Belgian Heritage Center.

Forbes Funeral Home is serving the family.

The family wishes to offer special thanks to all who visited Larry regularly, especially Sue Johnson & Dave Gengler for weekly communion visits, and to the incredibly caring staff of Pinecrest who became like his second family.

Together they raised six children: Albert (Eileen), Peggy (Keith), Mary, Kathleen (Guy), James (Joanne), and Thomas. Though they experienced the sorrow of losing their eldest child Albert in 2016, Barbara’s strength and love continued to anchor the family with quiet strength. Barbara found immense joy in being a grandmother to fifteen grandchildren: Albert (Blake)., Ryan, Jack (Madeline), Katie, Kaitlynn, Michael, Joseph, Sarah, Jenny, Guy Jr., Ashley (Greg), Maxwell, Caroline, Mikael, and Theo and a great grandmother to Albert, Rose, and Brooks.

She was born to Nina (Sears) and Marion Robinson in Red Gresham, WI on Oct. 16, 1934. JoAnn married Earl Staats Sr. at St. Peters Lutheran Church in Sturgeon Bay on July 12, 1952. Theirs was the first and only wedding broadcast over WOKW. He preceded her in death on February 18, 2014.  Mom and Dad loved to dance to a good Polka band.

In addition to being a wonderful wife and mother, JoAnn enjoyed many jobs over the years. She worked at the Fruit Growers Cooperative and loved working on the family farm. She also conducted food demos at many local grocery stores. On one memorable occasion, she talked her husband into participating in a food demo. It made her heart smile to see Earl cooking.

If she were here, she would want to thank the venues that supported and recommended her, and the people that allowed her to be a part of their special occasions. She loved to make people happy by feeding them food she had prepared.

JoAnn leaves behind her four cats, Curly, Larry, Mo, and Lucky. They kept her company and gave her plenty to do during the day. Special thanks to Donna and Earl, and chosen family Josie Copet and her son Nathan, for making sure that Joan was able remain in her home till the very end.

William Jay Nelson

William Jay Nelson, 83, of Kangaroo Lake, Baileys Harbor passed away on Monday, January 26, 2026 at Serenity Springs at Scandia Village in Sister Bay from complications of dementia.

Known as "Bill" or "Jay" to his friends and coworkers, he was a man of many facets.

Bill was a father who taught his two sons how to work hard and play hard. He instilled in them the importance of honesty and the value of being a loyal friend. While Bill could be a bit mercurial on the golf course and elsewhere, earning the nickname "Wild Bill", he had a big heart and was always willing to help a person in need.

Bill was a loving father-in-law and grandfather who cared deeply for his entire family. Intense, competitive, funny and smart are words that describe Bill. Perhaps he wasn't always the most at ease showing his softer side, but he cared deeply for his family and friends. He did the best he could with the emotional tools and upbringing that he experienced early in life. Bill worked hard to assure his family lived in comfort, got good educations and learned the basics of life's most practical matters. He did his best to be a good man and an earnest friend. He never gave up on life's simple principles.

He is survived by his wife, Kay; sons, William A. (Rosa) [and their daughter, Lillian], and Patrick (Julie) [and their son, Van]; along with his two brothers Bud and Bob, and sister Betty and their lovely families.

"We, Bill's family, would like to offer our most sincere thanks to the wonderful nursing staff at Serenity Springs and Unity Hospice, who helped Bill, and all of us, through this long and challenging illness. The care of him in his final days showed amazing compassion and professionalism. Your support and kindness will never be forgotten."

Karen Moeller

Karen Kay Moeller was born in Downers Grove, Illinois in 1967.

In 1971, her mother Judie and her two older siblings, Vicki and Mark, moved to Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin. Soon after, Judie married Arthur Robert Moeller, a 4th generation Sturgeon Bay native and co-owner of Moeller’s Garage at the corner of 3rd and Jefferson.

Karen was a gifted athlete, excelling in golf, bowling and track (hurdling, sprinting, long- and triple-jump). Karen was student assembly vice president, head cheerleader, and valedictorian of the Sturgeon Bay High School Class of 1985. Karen studied acting at the University of Iowa where she met her future husband. Karen spent her junior year abroad in London, England, studying acting, voice and stage combat from instructors of the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts. During that year she traveled to Edinburgh, Dublin, Stockholm, Paris and Leningrad in what was then the Soviet Union. She received her bachelors degree in psychology from Hunter College in 1998.

Karen’s passion was theatre. She was a commercial actor and model in New York City from 1990 to 2000. Moving back to Wisconsin, she performed with many theatre companies including Forward Theater, the theatre companies of the Bartell Theatre, Peninsula Players, Northern Sky, and Third Avenue Playworks. Non-stage work included voiceovers, radio commercials, the YouTube series Chad Vader, and phone trees where a nice person tells you to “please listen to the whole message because our options have recently changed”. She was Artistic Associate for Forward Theater in their first decade, managing projects, providing casting options from her database of Wisconsin actors, and coordinating the judging of scripts for their biannual Monologue Festival. Karen used her acting skill to train many doctors in empathy at the UW Hospital in a long-form improvisation as a patient or loved one experiencing stress.

Beautiful and graceful, with a soothing alto voice, she prided herself on her emotional honesty and listening. Other off-stage occupations included tour guide, internet advice columnist, jewelry-maker, advertising account representative, podcaster, and sensory analyst for Oscar Mayer where she graded lunch meats for sweet, sour, bitter, salty and umami on a scale of 1 to 15, while vigilant to detect unwanted flavors such as oxydization or barnyard/zoo.

Other passions included hiking, hosting, history, travel, home renovation, baking cookies, training her standard poodles Butter and Roxie, caring for her father, weightlifting, gift-giving, thank-you notes and birthday cards.

She recently conquered her fears by learning how to swim, and became a licensed skydiver with 62 solo jumps. She is renowned for her outdoor Christmas decorations on Fremont Avenue on the north side of Madison, and at the corner of 12th and Utah in Sturgeon Bay.

Creative, intelligent, generous, thoughtful and compassionate, Karen treated all people she met with kindness and respect, from the nervous actor in an audition room to the President of the United States. Karen was diagnosed with stage 4 ovarian cancer in late August 2025, and succumbed on January 16th, 2026 at age 58.

She was preceded in death by her sister Vicki, her mother Judie, and her father Bob Moeller. She is survived by her husband of 27 years, Tony Trout, her brother Mark Moeller and sister-in-law Jennifer Moeller of Sturgeon Bay, her uncle Matt Sisak, and cousins Judy, Jeff and Peter Sisak of Racine, Wisconsin.

Memorial donations can be sent to either the Door County Land Trust, the Door County Historical Society, or Forward Theater of Madison.

In Loving Memory of Christopher "Chris" Hecht Christopher Hecht, 59, passed away peacefully-surrounded by his family on January 19, 2026, at Aurora BayCare Medical Center in Green Bay, Wisconsin. Born March 5, 1966, in Milwaukee to David Hecht and Karen (Stromski) Wollenburg, Chris grew up with an eagerness to serve and a quiet strength that stayed with him his entire life. He graduated from Pardeeville High School in 1984 and later earned his Associates Degree at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh. In 1984, Chris moved to Washington Island, a place that would shape his purpose and deepen his love for community. There, he met Elizabeth "Liz" Jorgenson, the love of his life. They were married on September 26, 1992, at Trinity Lutheran Church. Settling in Sister Bay, they raised two children-Matthew and Helen -who, along with Liz, were the center of Chris's heart and the joy of his days. Chris began his working life with Anderson Construction before answering a deeper calling: public service. He started as a Firefighter and EMT with the Washington Island Fire Department and, in 1990, moved to the mainland to continue his life's work. Over the next 33 years, Chris served the Door County community as a Paramedic with Emergency Services of Door County and a Firefighter with the Sister Bay/Liberty Grove Fire Department. In 2001, he became Fire Chief, a role he held for 24 years-guiding, protecting, and mentoring with steadiness and care. Chris's influence reached far beyond Door County. Following the 9/11 attacks, he joined Salisbury Fire Apparatus as a salesman and designer, helping support the rebuilding of FDNY. Later, he continued serving at a national level as a consultant with Booz Allen Hamilton, contributing to contracts with the United States Marine Corps and Navy. "Retirement" was never in his vocabulary-service was not just what he did; it was who he was. Chris was, in every sense, a pillar of the community. He was the first call in a crisis, the calm in the storm, and the steady voice that turned fear into action. A mentor to many, Chris led with knowledge and respect, offering just enough firm guidance to keep people safe and on the right path. He modeled what it means to be a servant leader: he listened, sought to learn from others' perspectives, and left room for mistakes, knowing that growth often begins there. He was nonjudgmental, inclusive, and steadfastly supportive-a neighbor to all, regardless of background or belief. Door County knew him by his favorite saying: "Door County doing what Door County does best." Neighbors helping neighbors. That simple phrase became the mission of his days and the imprint of his legacy. The full measure of Chris's achievements and awards is too vast to list; more powerful than any accolade was the trust he earned and the lives he touched. Door County has lost one of its very best, and his absence leaves a profound hole in many hearts. Chris is survived by his loving wife, Liz, who was always by his side; his son, Matthew (Ashley Ellefson) Hecht, and beloved grand-pup Remy; his daughter, Helen (Nicholas) Peppler; his mother, Karen (Fred) Wollenburg; his father, David Hecht; his sisters, Elizabeth "Beth" (John Schwingel) Hecht and Jennifer Hecht; his brother, Noah (Emmy) Wollenburg; his brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law; and many cherished nieces and nephews. The Funeral Service for Chris will be held on Friday, January 30, 2026, at 11:00 AM at Shepherd of the Bay Lutheran Church, 10836 Hwy 42, Ellison Bay, WI. A visitation for family and friends will take place at the church on Thursday, January 29, 2026, from 3:00-6:45 PM, and again on Friday from 9:00-10:30 AM. Uniformed personnel will be participating in a ceremonial walk-through on Thursday at 6:45 PM and on Friday at 10:30 AM. Washington Island was the place his heart called home. He will be laid to rest on the island at a later date. Rest in Peace, Chris. We will take it from here. Memorial donations may be made in Chris's name to Door CANcer, P.O. Box 423, Sturgeon Bay WI 54235, http://www.doorcancer.com. Casperson Funeral Home & Cremation Services, LLC in Sister Bay is assisting the Hecht family. Larry Peterson

Larry Peterson, 70, of Sturgeon Bay, WI, passed away peacefully on December 19, 2025, in Green Bay, surrounded by his daughter Kelly, grandson Ethan, and partner Gail Austin.

Born on May 8, 1955, in Lee, IL, Larry was a carpenter through and through, a man who could make trim work look like art and who found his greatest satisfaction in creating beautiful things with his hands. His craftsmanship spoke for itself in every home he touched, every project he perfected.

If you knew Larry, you knew a man with a quick wit and a joke always at the ready, an extremely talented tradesman, and an avid food connoisseur who took his recipes seriously. He loved a good laugh - both telling jokes and hearing them. He showed his love through providing, through checking in, through the banter and conversations that meant more than he probably ever said out loud.

Larry had a way of showing he cared in moments that mattered, like asking if you were okay before worrying about anything else. He was real, genuine, and present in ways both big and small.

Larry is survived by his partner, Gail Austin; his children, Kelly Schwartz-Peterson, Ryan Peterson, and Reagan Peterson; his grandson, Ethan Schwartz-Davis and two additional grandchildren; and sister, Shari Peterson. He was preceded in death by his parents, Richard and Janice and brother, Randy Peterson.

In his final moments, Larry found the peace those who loved him had wished for him for years. He knew he was loved. Rest easy, Larry.

Bruce G. Keller

Bruce Glenn Keller, age 76, of Wheaton, IL and Ephraim, WI, passed away January 14, 2026.

Bruce was born to Robert and Lorraine Keller on September 27, 1949 in Chicago, Illinois. Bruce and his family considered Door County their home away from home, but he primarily grew up in the Chicagoland area. He was a graduate of Barrington High School and later University of Illinois Chicago. He received his Master’s degree from Northwestern Kellogg School of Management in 1979. He began his marketing career at Cooperative Marketing (CM Partners), later starting his own firm - Classical Marketing - with two friends and valued business partners.

Bruce was a longtime car enthusiast. He raced cars with MCSCC, SCCA, and with his two brothers Rob and Randy as part of Keller Brothers Racing. He was also an avid runner and cyclist, having completed two Chicago marathons and multiple Door County Century bike rides. He continued to maintain his active lifestyle through fitness programs at local sports clubs as well as at the Door County YMCA in Fish Creek, WI.

He married his wife Pam in October 1990, raising their two daughters Danielle and Hanna in their West Chicago home along with several beloved dogs. Bruce and his family spent considerable time at their Ephraim home, which he and Pam bought in 1989. Some of Bruce’s favorite Door County establishments to enjoy with family and friends included Pearl Wine Cottage, Stabbur, Chef’s Hat, and Twelve Eleven Wine bar, and he and his family spent many a summer evening enjoying Wilson’s ice cream near the Ephraim Bay or enjoying the sunset at Anderson Dock. They attended over 30 Fyr Bal festivals - one of Bruce’s favorite Ephraim summer events - and he treasured little more than going for a long bike ride around the Door County peninsula. From boating, hiking, dining, and biking, Bruce and his family made several cherished memories in Door County, making it up to their favorite place multiple times a year - even as recently as November 2025.

Bruce is fondly remembered for his unwavering love of friends and family and ever-present sense of humor.

Sheila Sabrey-Saperstein

Sheila Sabrey-Saperstein, 85, of Fish Creek, passed away peacefully at Door County Medical Center in Sturgeon Bay on Sunday, January 11, 2026, at 9:03 a.m. after a long illness.

Sheila was born December 4, 1940, and became the beloved adoptive daughter of John D. Sabrey and Marguerite E. Sabrey. She graduated from a parochial Catholic high school in Toledo and also attended Catholic college in Ohio, receiving her BA in Theatre. She went on to receive her PhD in Theater in 1988 from Northwestern University and was a lifelong lover and practitioner of all things thespian. She taught Theater at Northwestern for many years until she moved to Door County with her husband Phil in the late nineties.

John Sabrey, Sheila’s father, was a resident hotel manager in Chicago, and later in Toledo, Ohio, and Sheila spent her childhood in the busy and stimulating world of Great Lakes urban hotels. Her scrapbooks are full of autographed photos of celebrities of the day – Liberace and Gene Autry among them, and her father’s scrapbooks are full of signed photos of Dwight Eisenhower, Richard Nixon, John Kennedy (a hero of heroes in Irish Catholic communities of the time), Lyndon Johnson, and others, and he attended the Kennedy inauguration and ball in 1961; following in her parents’ footsteps, Sheila was a lifelong Democrat.

She was a creative soul right out of the gate – drawings, poems, humorous pieces, and especially high grades in speech, theater, and anything involving words and creativity characterize all of her memorabilia and every season of her long life.

Sheila married Zalman (Phil) Saperstein, the love of her life, in 1978 and they shared a rich life and marriage for 43 years until Phil’s death at their Fish Creek home in 2021. They retired to Door County in the late nineties and became regular fixtures of the community. Sheila was deeply involved in Door County theater – in the Peninsula Players and in Isadoora Theater Company of Sturgeon Bay, which she co-founded. She played a part in the 2010 film, Feed the Fish, alongside many other Door County actors and the prominent actor Tony Shalhoub. She was a member of the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Door County and was active for decades in AA. A trained photographer, the walls of her home are filled with many of her own Door County photographs, award-winning photos among them.

Sheila will be deeply missed by the many people in Door County and beyond who loved her and remember her energy, her humor, her commitment to social justice, the environment, and her devoted circle of fans and intimate friends.

Sheila is survived by her loving stepchildren Andy (Kathryn), Tina, and David (Susan Lee), by 7 grandchildren, 8 (soon to be 10) great grandchildren, as well as by a cousin, Tom Sabrey. She is preceded in death by her parents, John and Marguerite, by her beloved husband, Phil, and by many other dear family and friends.

In honor of Sheila’s wishes, no services will be held at this time. A private gathering in her honor will be planned in Door County in the spring or summer.

Sincere thanks to Door County Medical Center, who provided competent and compassionate care to Sheila for many years, to Serenity Springs in Sister Bay during her rehabilitation after a recent hip fracture, and to Huehn’s Funeral Home in Sturgeon Bay (Casperson Funeral Home in Sister Bay) for handling the funeral arrangements.

Special thanks are also due Marta Volkman of Fish Creek, who provided jack-of-all-trades care to Sheila and to Phil beginning with Phil’s final illness many years ago, and more recently as Sheila’s care needs became greater. Marta and Sheila were dear friends, as evidenced by Marta now adopting Sheila’s beloved 5ish pound dog, Rosie, who is now in a household with Marta’s 165-pound dog, Chance – quite the pair, and Sheila will indeed keep her loving gaze on them both.

Special thanks are also due to Suzanne Rose of Sturgeon Bay, a beloved friend, fellow photographer, and “chosen family” to Sheila, along with Suzanne’s daughter, Delilah – Suzanne has also played a major part in loving Sheila over the years in personal and practical ways. Jeep Pagel and Michelle Durflinger, also of Door County, have also been faithful friends and chosen family to Sheila for many years, along with many others far too numerous to mention.

Sheila will be sorely missed, and her loss will be felt for many years to come in Door County and beyond.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in Sheila’s honor to Isadoora Theater Company, Sturgeon Bay – P.O. Box 772in Sturgeon Bay, WI 54235. Expressions of sympathy, memories, and photos of Sheila may be shared with her family through her tribute page at www.HuehnsFuneralHome.com and www.CaspersonFuneralHome.com

John Seiberlich

John Seiberlich, of Milwaukee and Sister Bay, passed away on January 11, 2026

. He was born on July 26, 1956. John was one of five children born to Louis Seiberlich and Elizabeth (Seiberlich nee Long) Mezera. He grew up in Brookfield, Wisconsin, where he developed an early love of music and electronics. He graduated from Catholic Memorial High School in 1974 and from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee with a degree in Business. John followed his technical interests into a successful career at IBM, which included a five-year stint with his family on an international team based in England.

John's family have been Door County locals for three generations. When he was young, his family spent their summers in Sister Bay, packing five active children onto the family boat. In 2001, John bought Top Shelf Cafe and Gourmet in Sister Bay, becoming a fixture in the local business community and over the years transitioning to full-time Door County life. John thrived on finding the tastiest tidbits and chatting up his regulars at "The Shop."

John was an intellectual who loved using his brain and sharing his ideas. He adored the New York Times crossword puzzle and usually completed the entire thing - in pen, no less. John was a big reader and particularly enjoyed learning about military history. As brainy as he was, though, John was a Wisconsin sports lover; he was a particularly die-hard Brewers fan and frequently napped while watching golf. John also travelled extensively and enjoyed finding local watering holes where he could fully absorb the culture. At the end of the day, he particularly enjoyed his kids and took special, tangible pride in all of their varied accomplishments.

John is survived by his mother, Elizabeth Mezera; his sisters Anne, Amy and Molly, and his brother Peter; his children Nicole, Jamie, Bryan, Kerry and Kate; and his eight grandchildren: Maya, Benjamin, Annika, Morgan, Krishan, Margaret, Surya and Amelia. John is also survived by his former wife of many years, Kathleen Burke. He was preceded in death by his father, Louis Seiberlich.

A wake will be held starting at 4 p.m. on Friday, January 16, 2026, at the AC Tap in Baileys Harbor, where all are invited to celebrate John's life with his family and children. A memorial service will be held at Thyme Restaurant in Sister Bay starting at 11 a.m. on Saturday January 17, 2026, with fellowship to follow.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be directed toward the Door County Community Opportunity Investment Network (COIN), 222 N. 3rd Ave, Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin, 54235 - or a glass of Dewar's for your favorite local bartender.

Arrangements have been entrusted with Casperson Funeral Home & Cremation Services in Sister Bay. Expressions of sympathy, memories, and photos of John may be shared with his family through his tribute page at CaspersonFuneralHome.com.

Paul Spude

Paul John Spude Paul Spude, 73, passed to the loving hands of God peacefully on January 4, 2026, with his loving wife Julaine, hand in hand, also surrounded by his children and grandchildren, after a long journey with Parkinson’s Disease.

Paul was born October 22, 1952, in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin, the first child of Eugene and Mary Ann (Destree) Spude. Paul married the love of his life, Julaine (LaCrosse) on May 8, 1971, at St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Institute, Wisconsin. Paul and Julaine raised three beautiful children, Amy (Chris) Lautenbach of Fish Creek, WI, Matthew (Megan) of Nashotah, WI and Lora (Keith) Falish of DePere, WI. Paul cherished his grandchildren, Madeline, Gabriel, Lauren, Lydia, Ashlyn, Brooklyn and Peyton.

During his life together with Julaine, Paul worked in his father’s family business, Spude Construction, which was a proud and successful masonry construction business. His training, which started in his childhood, under the guidance of his US Marine Corp. Sargeant father, would help shape him into the diligent, detail oriented, respectful, and hard-working man; with broad shoulders and a huge heart, that he became to be. As Spude Construction continued to grow, Paul worked during the days in the family business, then worked 2nd shift at Bay Shipbuilding for a number of years, to support his growing family, and also to one day acquire Spude Construction, which he did in 1985. The family business continued its tradition of talented craftsmanship, exceptional customer service, ingenuity of problem solving, and most of all, utmost pride in his work. He had often said to customers as they thanked him for the beautiful work, “The Good Lord provides my medium, I merely piece it together”, in his ever humble way. Paul and Julaine together paved the way for what Spude Construction meant, Integrity.

Along with being a successful businessman, Paul’s talents and love for sports brought him to his endearing passion, high school football and basketball officiating. He was inspired and encouraged by numerous notable men, and started his next life endeavor, whistle around his neck, clenched in his teeth, doning his proud black and white striped uniform, he started his career that created another legacy, a legacy whose outreach is extremely broad and well respected. As his upbringing taught him, hard work, respectfulness, and being prideful in his craft, he excelled at officiating, and enjoyed his journey through the ranks. Officiating was not only a passion, it was a brotherhood, and a commitment to his partners, to which he was deeply devoted to. His shared life experiences with his fellow black and white striped brothers; not only in various gyms and on football fields across the entire state of Wisconsin; but also in various watering holes discussing “post game” analysis, the stuff that an entire book could be written about, was his love. His partners and officiating friends were an extension of family for Paul. He loved each and every one of them, always there for them if anything was ever needed. His passion and devotion to officiating, led him to be an advocate, teacher, and mentor to countless officials, coaches, and athletes alike. He wasn’t there to be intimidating, he was there to instruct and help athletes and coaches interpret rules of the game, sometimes with a wink of his eye, or polite smile, his knowledge was imparted on them. A member of the GBOA (Green Bay Officials Association) for 33 years, his accolades included state title appearances in football and basketball. He felt extremely proud being on Camp Randall Stadium turf, where his beloved Wisconsin Badgers called home. Likewise, tossing the opening tip-off at center court of the Kohl Center, his confidence beaming like a beacon, signaling that his determination had its rewards. For his achievements, Paul was inducted into the GBOA Hall of Fame in 2014, an honor he graciously accepted.

Paul loved his family. A devoted husband, dedicated father, a proud and loving grandfather, a never-to-be-replicated brother, beloved uncle, and dear friend to many. He enjoyed his vacations and excursions with family and friends, always appreciative of God’s creations, and of the company he was with.

Paul is survived by his loving wife, Julaine, of 54 years, his three children, seven grandchildren, eleven brothers and sisters, Annette (Ron) Hall, Sturgeon Bay; Pete (Linda) Spude, Sturgeon Bay; Rachel DeClark, Brussels; Donna (Don) Rudolph, Sturgeon Bay; Rita (Trevor) Balicke, Winnipeg, Canada; Joanne (Brett) Guilette, Brussels; Irene (Kevin) Lardinois, Hurley; John (Mary) Spude, Brussels; Jim (Donna) Spude, Beloit; Jane (Steve) Chaudoir, Rosiere; Jerry (Shannon) Spude, Brussels; sisters-in-law, Jean Denil-Kabitzke, Kewaunee; and Joyce (Zeno) Preimesberger, Algoma; and many beloved nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Barb (Gerald) Rouer, brothers-in-law Steve DeClark and Les Denil, father and mother-in-law, Mervin and Delores LaCrosse.

Daryl Larson

Daryl Allen Larson packed up his trombone and headed home to his Savior in Heaven on Monday, January 5, 2026. He passed in his sleep with the love of his life by his side.

He leaves behind his soulmate, Ruann, parents Roger and Norma Larson, brother Brian Larson, daughter from previous marriage - Amanda (Tyler) Fischer, grand sugars Laura Mae and John Fischer, niece Catherine Larson, nephew Jack Larson as well as family and precious friends.

At Daryl’s request, this obituary will highlight the past five years of his life which were filled with love, laughter, and the Lord. In fact, he chose baptism in Eagle Harbor as his way to tell the world how important it is to know Jesus as Lord and Savior. The location was fitting, as Daryl was a lifelong resident of Ephraim, Wisconsin, one of the most beautiful places on earth.

God blessed Daryl with the opportunity to purchase the Ephraim Village Cottages property in March 2020. This opportunity allowed him to bring it back into the Larson family after managing the business for over a decade for the previous owner. Buying the property he grew up on was a day he never thought would happen but always hoped it would. He celebrated this accomplishment by asking Ruann to marry him by proposing in American Sign Language while she interpreted the proposal and of course, she said Yes! They wed in September 2020 and hosted a celebration of the year complete with delicious food, fantastic music that featured Daryl on the trombone, a sign language dance duet by Daryl and Ruann, and a lengthy fireworks display.

Daryl was at his best when he was hosting people whether at the cottages or in his home. He hosted all kinds of people from near and far. He never knew a stranger because he had a heart of gold. And that is why people loved him so much. He did not think twice of helping people out whether the person was a friend from childhood or someone he just met a few days prior. Guests that stayed at the cottage resort were drawn to Daryl for his kindness, his knowledge of all things Door County, his endless array of jokes, love for dogs, and impromptu gatherings where the door was open for anyone to attend.

Daryl encompassed the kindness, forgiveness, joy, and love of the Lord that he followed and served. People will forever remember how they felt when they were around Daryl, and there was never a shortage of laughter, talk about the Packers and smack talk about “Da Bears”. To say that people will miss him is an understatement. Daryl has left a hole in the hearts of many, and a void in the community he called home.

Daryl’s family invites you to celebrate his life alongside them at Family Worship Center, 1715 Michigan Street, Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin on Saturday, January 24, 2026, at 10:00 a.m.

Prior to death Daryl asked for friends and family to not send flowers. He would prefer to honor the hometown heroes who came to his home numerous times to assist him after his stroke. They treated him with dignity, respect, kindness, and gentleness every single time. He appreciated them far more than words can ever express. Please send donations in lieu of flowers to: Ephraim Fire Department, PO Box 138, Ephraim, WI 54211. Please put on the memo line: “Daryl Larson Says Thanks”.

His family will hold a private burial with military honors this spring. Forbes Funeral Home is serving the family.
