Richard Knights Dodge

Richard Knights Dodge, 77 years of age, of Chicago, IL, passed away on September 9, 2025 at his home in Lincoln Park, IL. Richard was born on May 14, 1948 in Galesburg, IL to Lour C. Dodge and Nadine Knights Dodge. Richard grew up in Mt. Prospect, IL and graduated from the Wisconsin State University, Oshkosh with a degree in Business Management and was the President of his Sigma Pi Fraternity. He was a devoted fraternity member and often spoke fondly of the good times he shared in college and after. Richard, also known as RK or Rich, met his wife, Sue Cotts on the steps of the quad on campus. According to him it was “love at first sight”. Sue’s pet name for Richard was RKadian. Many adoring letters have been found that showed just how smitten they were with each other. On February 10, 1971 Richard married Susan at St. Francis Xavier Cathedral in Green Bay, and together they have been married for the last 54 years. They both traveled together extensively and enjoyed many trips to China. One of their favorite places to be together was the Bark Road cottage in Whitefish Bay, Door County. They enjoyed many years on the lake surrounded by life-long friends whom they adored. Richard claimed he never worked a day in his life. He was an extremely successful entrepreneur for many, many years, covering a wide variety of areas of expertise. He started his first successful business endeavor in college with creating student supply boxes, which was technically the first version of Amazon in the late 60’s. He went on to importing tropical fish from all over the world, then to importing exotic birds. Richard and Sue had several pet birds together, Macaws and an African Grey. They never had children, but their lives were filled with plenty of love from their dogs over the years including Bernie, Rio, Goldie, Pupper, and Bailey. Richard eventually saddled into real estate with renovating and purchasing rental buildings throughout the Chicago area. He had loyal members of his team, some that have been with him for 30+ years and helped to create and maintain most of his real estate business. Sue and Richard’s Chicago home on North Lincoln Avenue was a passion project. It was an old theater converted into their personal residence. Embellished with amazing trim carpentry throughout, his specialty, and it exuded in sophistication and style. Richard was also very skillful with the stock market, an avid reader, a member of a slew of investment groups, and always curious. If he wanted to learn about something that caught his attention, he immersed himself with understanding every aspect of it then made strategic investments. There are many people he would enjoy talking with in regards to the stock market and was eager to share his knowledge and teach his methodologies. If you were lucky enough to get a sweet stock tip, most likely you came out ahead. Richard was a happy go lucky guy. He never shied away from getting to know people. He appreciated loyalty and people who had a work ethic. A spiced rum with diet coke and a ‘cig’ in hand, some classic tunes in the background and he was a happy camper. Richard is survived by his wife, Sue; his niece, Kim; his sister-in-law, Amy; and his grand nieces and nephews, Hailey, and McKenzie along with Nick and Peter. Richard was preceded in death by his mother and father; and his sister. Who could ever forget time with Richard! A kind soul with many stories to share from his very full life. Richard will be laid to rest during a graveside ceremony at Lakeview Cemetery in Jacksonport on Saturday, September 27, 2025 at 3:00 p.m. (Allow extra time for the detour.) Huehns Funeral Home, Inc. of Sturgeon Bay is assisting the Dodge family. He never hesitated to invite fellow members to join them for breakfast at Pelletier’s in Fish Creek after Sunday service. Art is remembered for his passion for sports! He loved bowling and playing golf until physically he could no longer participate. That didn’t slow him down! He continued to work on the golf course, cutting grass until he was 88 years old! Art was a fan of the Packers, Brewers, Badgers, along with basketball and football games at any level! Art coordinated many tailgate parties at Milwaukee County Stadium when the Packers played in Milwaukee! Art loved a good joke but more enjoyed sharing a joke with others! He loved playing cards, hunting with his son, Ron, and hosting a party or two or three for his friends. Many memories for his family to cherish. Art’s victory service will be held on Wednesday, September 24, 2025. Visitation at 10:00 with service to follow at 11:00 at Christ Ev Lutheran Church, 9986 WI-57, Bailey’s Harbor, WI 54202. Lynn Myron Nelson

Lynn Myron Nelson, age 83, of Fish Creek, was called home to his Lord and Savior, surrounded by his family, on Saturday afternoon, September 13, 2025, while at Bellin ICU in Green Bay. Born February 12, 1942, in Sturgeon Bay, Lynn was the son of the late Ellsworth and Jayne (Mickelson) Nelson. He attended Wildwood School in Sister Bay from first through eighth grade and graduated from Gibraltar High School in 1960. In his early years, Lynn worked seasonally in Door County during the summers and in manufacturing in Milwaukee during the winters. In 1964, he was drafted into the U.S. Army, serving honorably as a Military Police officer until 1966. On April 22, 1972, Lynn eloped with the love of his life, Margie L. Kuehn, and they were married at Trinity Lutheran Church in Green Bay. Their marriage was a testament to enduring love, faith, and mutual devotion-an inspiring example of Christian partnership to all who knew them. Lynn was a devoted member of St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Valmy, where he served as an usher with his son. He was also a proud member of the American Legion Billy Weiss Post 527 in Sister Bay, where he served with honor as post chaplain. His career spanned nearly 40 years with General Telephone Electric (later Verizon), working as a switching technician serving northern Door County and Washington Island from 1966 until his retirement in 2004. Lynn was known for his sharp wit, quick sense of humor, and willingness to help anyone in need. Whether fixing an engine, offering a warm conversation, or tinkering with a neighbor's project, Lynn had a gift for making people feel seen and cared for. He was mechanically gifted and had a reputation in the community as the one who could fix just about anything. His garage was often a hub of activity for friends and neighbors in need of a repair or a laugh. He had a deep love for vintage automobiles, especially Model A Fords, and was an active member of the Cherryland A's, restoring classic cars and enjoying time with fellow enthusiasts. With Margie by his side, Lynn took great pride in the large garden they planted and maintained together-a shared labor of love that brought them joy and nourished their home. Family meant everything to Lynn. He deeply loved and supported his children, Natalie and Paul, and was present in every part of their lives. He especially treasured cheering Paul on at college sporting events-often making the long drive to Milwaukee and back, even late into the night, just to be there on the sidelines. While Natalie was living abroad, Lynn and Margie traveled through Europe to visit her, exploring many countries and creating lasting memories together. At home, Lynn, Natalie, and Paul spent countless hours working side by side on projects, sharing time and laughter. Lynn is survived by his beloved wife of 53 years, Margie; their children, Natalie and Paul of Fish Creek; close family friend Alex Reina of Ephraim; his brother, Larry (Jane) Nelson of Ellison Bay; and in-laws: Dennis Shaw of Iola, Joan Nelson Thome of Green Bay, Shirley Tanck of Sturgeon Bay, Cindy Kuehn of Appleton, Mary (Ron) Kramer of Sturgeon Bay, Joy (David) Tomjanovich of Sturgeon Bay, Steve Kuehn of Egg Harbor, Susan (Bill) Karas of Sturgeon Bay, and Robin (Dean) Delfosse of Brussels, as well as many dear nieces and nephews. John S. Kellner

John Stephen Kellner, age 80 of Sturgeon Bay and Sheboygan, passed away on Thursday, September 11, 2025, with his family by his side. He was born on August 7, 1945, to the late Frank Jr. and Maragaret (Pleck) Kellner in Sturgeon Bay. He was a 1963 graduate of Sturgeon Bay High School. After high school, he attended UW-Stevens Point for a semester but could not bear to be away from his high school sweetheart, Sharon Fictum. On April 24, 1965, John was united in marriage to Sharon at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Sturgeon Bay. John lived a life of faith in service, rooted in his love for Christ. He was a lector and distributor for St. Paul's Catholic Parish in Fish Creek, and later at Holy Name of Mary Catholic Church in Maplewood. He delivered communion to shut-ins, bringing the word of Christ to those who could not attend church in person. John also served in various leadership roles in the Boy Scouts of America at the district and troop levels and participated in the Order of the Arrow. John was a lifetime member of the Wisconsin Speleological Society where he worked with the group to improve landowner relations and educate the public about the beauty and science behind Wisconsin's caves. He served on the Gibraltar Town Board and the Gibraltar Volunteer Fire Department and enjoyed riding motorcycles with his friends in the Recyclists Motorcycle Club. John's life of service extended beyond these structured groups into his everyday life. He was first to lend a helping hand to his family, friends, and neighbors, and was fondly known as the "Angel Snow Removal Service" for helping his elderly neighbors in the winter months for as long as his body would allow. John was not defined by his careers but continued his life of service with every position he held. When John and Sharon first married, they ran the Holiday Motel in Sturgeon Bay, where they discovered their love for sharing the beauty of their community with visitors to Door County. As their family expanded, John worked as a lineman for the Sturgeon Bay Utilities, bringing power to residents during storms and through service expansions. John and Sharon missed their time with visitors to Door County and purchased the Dawn Breaker Lodge in Fish Creek in 1982, growing it into the Twin Oaks Country Lodge, where they continued to share their love for the Door Peninsula with guests from all over the world until 1994. During that time, John also worked as a bus driver and janitor for the Gibraltar Area School District until his retirement in 2012. After retirement, John and Sharon moved to Sheboygan to live with their grandchildren until their battles with vascular dementia and Alzheimer's brought them back to their much-missed hometown of Sturgeon Bay in 2024. John loved the outdoors, and spent his free time camping, hiking, bicycling, skiing, photographing nature, riding motorcycles, caving, and traveling with his family and friends throughout the Midwest. John's favorite place on earth was the land he and Sharon purchased in southern Door County in 1968, which is the location of Paradise Pit, one of Wisconsin's longest and most unique caves. He spent decades working with family and his friends at the Speleological Society to expand and preserve the cave and the hardwood forest surrounding it. He was dedicated to conservation and worked tirelessly to create this haven that his family enjoys still. His love for all things outdoors was passed on to his children and grandchildren, who continue to share in his passion for these activities in their daily lives. John was known for his sense of humor, real-world problem solving, and tireless dedication to helping those he loved. His quick wit, booming voice, and ability to look at any challenge with an eye for unique solutions will be sorely missed by all those who loved him most. Special thanks go out to the staff at Bayview Senior Care and Unity Hospice for their dedication to his care, to Huehn's Funeral Home for their compassion and assistance during this loss, and to Deacon Mark Hibbs for bringing him God's word while he was confined at Bayview. John is survived by his beloved wife, Sharon; children, Todd (partner Robin Hansen) Kellner of Peshtigo, and Sara (partner Ben Anschutz) Kellner of Bailey's Harbor and Sheboygan; grandchildren Gabe Butler, Nolan Thiel, and Madilyn Thiel; sister Barbara Shreve of Madison; and sister-in-law Jan (Dolittle) Kellner of South Carolina. He is further survived by other relatives and friends. John is preceded in death by his parents; siblings Frank (Fritz) Kellner and Kathy Schmidt; and several nieces and nephews. A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held for John on Monday, September 29, 2025, at 11 a.m. at Holy Name of Mary Catholic Church in Maplewood with Fr. William Brunner officiating. A visitation will be held at church from 9:30 a.m. until 10:45 a.m. on Monday. Expressions of sympathy, memories, photos, or other celebrations or acknowledgments of John's life may be shared with his family through his tribute page at www.HuehnsFuneralHome.com.

Jean Smejkal

To my family, relatives, and friends, just to let you know, after enjoying a long and enjoyable life of 95 years, I left on Sunday, August 24, 2025 for the Mystery Trip of a lifetime. It is not the same of the Mystery Trips offered in the travel brochures. This trip being very exclusive. No passport required. Travelers insurance and travelers checks are not needed. On this being a one-way trip, there will be no postal service - post cards, email, nor texting. No baggage to carry and no frequently used phrases in a foreign language to remember. I leave behind my daughter, Barbara Smejkal-Guzy of San Antonio Texas; three grandchildren, Ann Smejkal, Adam Smejkal, and Jordan Smejkal-Guzy; and other relatives. My parents, Leo and Katherine (nee Toonen) Jordan; husband, Roland; children, Randy Smejkal and Suzanne Smejkal; are already there waiting for me. Roland and I were able to share over 61 years of marriage from when we were married on May 5, 1951 at the Sturgeon Bay Moravian Church, until his passing on December 14, 2012. After the kids were of school age, I kept busy by serving along with Roland at the Department of Agriculture, University of Wisconsin USDA Research Station, just north of Sturgeon Bay, in the Town of Sevastopol. Jean continued her career in research as laboratory technician for the Department of Agriculture, University of Wisconsin, USDA Potato Introduction Project at the Research Station. I retired from there in 1990 after 25 years. I enjoyed watching the animals, tending to my garden, painting folk art, quilting and other crafts, and keeping up on my genealogy. No service will be held. I will be laid to rest beside Roland in the columbarium at Nicolet Memorial Gardens in the Town of Scott. Arrangements have been entrusted with Huehns Funeral Home, Inc. & Door County Crematory LLC in Sturgeon Bay. Expressions of sympathy, memories, and photos from my life may be shared with my family through my tribute page at www.HuehnsFuneralHome.com. So, with much anticipation and until we meet again. Adios, au revoir and auf wiedersehen. Love, Jeanie

Phyllis J. Taylor of Egg Harbor, 78, passed away peacefully in her home, surrounded by love, on August 31, 2025. Phyllis lived with a joyful spirit, a playful heart, and a kindness that touched everyone she met. She was born on April 9, 1947 in Waukesha to Woodrow and Hazel (Schwemmer) Hake. Phyllis grew up in Waukesha and graduated from Waukesha South High School before earning her bachelor's degree from Stout State University. She had a long career in data analysis with Deluxe Systems, and retired to Door County in 2013. Family was the center of her world. She adored her children and grandchildren, treasuring moments spent building memories with them. Her grandchildren were her pride and joy, and she poured endless love into their lives. She shared a love of travel with her longtime partner, exploring places near and far. From adventures across the Door to journeys abroad, she delighted in experiencing new cultures, landscapes, and discoveries together. She had a wonderful sense of humor and a childlike curiosity that never dimmed. She loved to laugh, explore, and discover new things - reminding those around her not to take life too seriously and to find joy in small wonders. Her kindness was unmatched. She had a gift for making people feel seen, special, and appreciated. Whether through words, gestures, or the thoughtful hand-grafted cards and gifts, she had a way of letting everyone know they mattered. Her friendships were among the greatest treasures of her life. George R. Wagner

George Richard Wagner, 81, of the Town of Sevastopol, died at his home on Sunday morning, August 31, 2025. He was born August 5, 1944 in Sturgeon Bay, the son of the late George Charles and Patricia Marie (Madden) Wagner. George graduated from Sevastopol High School in 1963. On November 14, 1964 he married the love of his life, Carla Mae Tassoul at St. Peters Ev. Lutheran Church. Carla preceded George in death on June 27th, 1995, and he carried her memory with him every day for the remainder of his life. George dedicated 28 years to PBI and his remaining 10 years were with Bay Ship in the tool room. He retired in 2004. His greatest joy was his family. George took great pride in the family that he and Carla created. He was always in the stands of his grandchildren's activities. He could be found sitting quietly on the sidelines of wrestling matches, baseball, softball, football and basketball games as well as theater and pageant events. When he wasn't doing that, he loved nothing more than working around his old homestead, which he affectionately called "The Ranch". He tended to his many gardens, harvesting every vegetable imaginable but especially cucumbers. With those, he could be sure that his family was all stocked with pickles throughout the year. George's love of hunting and fishing was also a significant part of his life. He could often be found fishing off one of the many docks around Sturgeon Bay and ice fishing when able. George loved nature, wildlife and being outside, which made fall one of his favorite times of year. He loved spending time in his deer stand and being an active part of everybody's hunt, whether it was helping track a deer or simply listening to all the other hunting stories. His surviving family includes three children, Wendell (Anita) Wagner, Mark (Tina) Wagner, Amy (Lance) Ellefson; grandchildren, Tyler (Ashley) Wagner, Nolan Wagner, Laura (Davis) Stoffel, Neal (Shauna) Wagner, Jessica (Derek) Niedzwiecki, Ashley (fiancé, Matt Hecht) Ellefson, and Cal Ellefson; great-grandchildren, Carter, Emerson, Harvey, Alana, and Noah; sister, Susan (John) Schartner; and sister-in-law, Lauris Wagner. Surviving family also includes many nieces and nephews, who affectionately referred to him throughout his life as "Uncle Georgie." Preceding him in death were his parents, George and Patricia Wagner; wife, Carla; brother, David Wagner; sister, Diane (Bob) Schartner; and sister-in-law, Judy (Ken) Knuth. The family wishes to extend sincere gratitude to Tom and Cathy Eckers for their lifelong friendship and support to George. Funeral service will be held at 6:30 p.m., Monday, September 8, 2025 at Huehns Funeral Home with John Hauser as celebrant. Burial will be at St. John Lutheran Cemetery in Valmy. Friends may call at the funeral home on Monday from 3:00 to 6:30 p.m. Memorials may be directed to Door CANcer, Inc. or the West Jacksonport Ball Club. “Though many years have passed since we lost Mom, Dad never stopped carrying the weight of her absence. As Dad leaves this world , we find peace in knowing that he is reunited with her.” Expressions of sympathy, memories, and photos of George may be shared with his family through his tribute page at www.HuehnsFuneralHome.com.

Betty was born on May 2, 1953, to the late Germaine (Holub) and Benjamin Blaha in Algoma. She was a proud 1971 graduate of Algoma High School.
