Carl "Cal" Michael Holvenstot

I, Carl "Cal" Holvenstot, 92 years, being of feeble mind and body, found peace on August 13, 2026. Born in Madison, Wisconsin, on February 2, 1934, l was the third child of Don Holvenstot and Marguerite (Powers) Holvenstot. My sister Barbara and my brother Philip are both still on the sunny side of the grass. Having lived 92 years in several locations and having made a living with too many occupations to list them all, I'll just mention a few. As a kid I caddied, set pins in a bowling alley, babysat, and worked on farms. I joined the Marine Corps when I turned 18 and fought in the Korean War. I worked in a few Minnesota factories, and on a cattle ranch in Montana, as a telephone man, a policeman/fireman, and an emergency room orderly, a hospital security guard, a private detective, a systems technician with AT&T, and a real estate salesperson in Illinois, and a home health aid, security person, and a bus driver in Sturgeon Bay. I loved outdoor sports, canoe racing of which I won a few, sailing, motorcycling, biking, camping, cross country skiing, and other sports I wasn't as good at. Suzanne and I met at Hope Church, and we were fortunate to enjoy 29 years of marriage. Together we loved to hike, kayak, go for motorcycle and bicycle rides, play cards and board games, and spend time with our pets. That's the very abbreviated story of my life. I loved life, the good, the bad, and the ugly. I'd like to stick around for another 92 years, but my body is not cooperating. To my wife, Suzanne, my children, Patrick (Mary Lou) Holvenstot, Timothy Holvenstot, Christopher Holvenstot, and Bridget (special friend Edward Henderson) Holvenstot; step-children, Dorian (Tyson) Loberg Beck, Kirsten (Hoyt) Purinton, Sven (Angela) Loberg, and Kai Loberg; grandchildren, Scarlet (Elias) Bahou and Serena Holvenstot, Neava and Axel Beck, Aidan and Magnus Purinton, Landon and Olivia Loberg, and Noah Loberg; great-grandchildren, Ivy Greiten, Tucker Fry, Peter Bahou; and the family and friends I'm leaving behind. I love all of you very much. Now it's time for me to see what God has in store for me next. See you later...... maybe, Cal. A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, August 22, 2026 at Hope United Church of Christ in Sturgeon Bay. The family will receive friends from 11:00 a.m. to until the time of service at 1:30 p.m. A reception for family and friends will follow in the Hope Fellowship Hall. Mariann L. Snyder

Mariann L. Snyder left this earth to be with her Lord and Savior on August 4, 2026, at the age of 75. We will miss her big, beautiful smile, which she shared with everyone she met; her wonderful sense of humor; and her ability to always look on the bright side of life. Her positive attitude was infectious, and we all benefited from it. Most of all, we will miss her warm hugs and genuine, unconditional love. Mariann truly believed in the saving grace of Jesus. She cherished her daily devotions, reading her Bible, journaling, and she lived her life accordingly. During her daily two-mile walks, she would take time to count her blessings and commune with her God. Mariann was born in New Richmond, Wisconsin, on April 3, 1951, to her proud parents, Dale A. Wheeler and Rose M. (Priebe) Wheeler. In the spring of 1969, she graduated from Chippewa Falls Senior High School in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin. On September 1, 1973, in Elmore, Minnesota, Mariann married her love and life partner of 53 years, Tucker Jon Snyder. She was devoted to her family and embraced motherhood fully—it became her life’s passion. Her sons, Travis Jon and Andrew James, were born in 1981 and 1984, respectively. In later years, her heart burst with joy every time she was blessed with a grandchild. They lit her world with a brilliance no one could deny. Mariann was born to care for others, and she did so throughout her entire life. As the oldest child, she was a natural caregiver—from assisting a widower as a teenager, to working as a dental assistant, managing an assisted living facility, and most recently working with Advocates In-Home Care of Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin. Her caring spirit continued even in death, as Mariann graciously chose to be a registered organ donor, giving others the gift of hope and the possibility of a longer, fuller life. She is loved beyond words and missed beyond measure by her husband, Tucker Jon Snyder of Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin; sons, Travis Jon (Abby) of Naples, Florida, and Andrew James (Alyssa) of Marshall, Minnesota; five beautiful grandchildren—Malik, Jayden, Jake, Isabella, and Quinn; five siblings, Diana Smetana (Mike), Dean Wheeler (Stephanie), Rebecca Albert (Mike), Todd Wheeler (Janie), Lori Boley (David); sister-in-law Pat Ludow (Bob), a multitude of nieces, nephews, and cousins; and so many wonderful friends. Preceding her in death were her parents, Dale and Evie Wheeler; her paternal and maternal grandparents; a brother-in-law; and sisters-in-law. Memorial service information will be announced at a later date. Mariann leaves behind a legacy of faith, love, compassion, and service. Her life was a blessing to so many, and the love she gave so freely will continue to live on in all those who were fortunate enough to know her. “Well done, good and faithful servant.”

Sheila Haggerty Turner

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the death of Sheila Haggerty Turner, age 86, on Saturday, December 6, 2025, in It is with deep sorrow that we announce the death of Sheila Haggerty Turner, age 86, on Saturday, December 6, 2025, in Sturgeon Bay, WI. Sheila was born on December 23, 1938, in Milwaukee, WI. She was the eldest daughter of Patrick Eugene Haggerty and Beatrice Ethel (Menne) Haggerty. She was a graduate of Ursuline Academy and later Southern Methodist University in Dallas, TX where she received a degree in Spanish. In the early 1960s, Sheila moved to Sturgeon Bay, WI with her first husband, Martin "Mike" Cyrus Kelsey, Jr. to her beloved old, quarried stone house on the bay. Other than during the coldest winter periods, she loved residing in the wooded area filled with birdsong and a yard facing Green Bay for her growing family. Sheila owned and operated businesses in downtown Sturgeon Bay including Sheila's Corner House Shops and Great Lakes Yacht Services (GLYS). She gave generously of her time and resources, serving for years on the Sturgeon Bay School Board, and volunteering at a variety of local organizations including the Door County Memorial Hospital, the Sturgeon Bay school system, Girl Scouts, and her church. Sheila was a lifelong practicing Roman Catholic and an active member of St. Joseph Parish in Sturgeon Bay. As co-owner of Palmer Johnson, a business originally purchased by her father Pat Haggerty, Sheila continued a family tradition in racing and pleasure sailing boats with much time spent at the Sturgeon Bay Yacht Club. She toured Green Bay and waters of the Great Lakes region, often towing her children on fondly remembered trips on her boat, The Screamin' Sheila. Sheila met and later married her love, the late Davis "Scotty" Richard Turner in 1975. They continued to reside in the Wisconsin home, enjoying the vegetables and flowers of Scotty's gardening passion, but together they expanded their territory and community of friends with a second home in Captiva, FL. Sheila and Scotty were frequently seen walking their dogs on the beautiful Gulf shores, especially enjoying the spectacular sunsets and winter warmth. While Sheila loved to travel, she was truly happiest at home where she enjoyed quiet time solving daily puzzles with a never-ending mug of tea by her side. The kitchen with its large family table was often the heart of the home for endless meals. She prepared fancy dinner party feasts using recipes from her big cookbook collection and comfort meals like southern fried chicken and cheese grits or the often-demanded chili and corn chip casserole served while watching her team of teams, the Green Bay Packers. She welcomed, not always happily, a menagerie of pets from her first rescue cat, Punkins, to her final canine companion and support dog, a sweet Shiba Inu named Min. Family was everything. Sheila greatly valued being an independent woman, but when asked about her ambitions, she would always answer that she wanted to be a mother and that she wanted to raise her children to be responsible individuals allowed to pursue their own passions. She set wide boundaries for exploration and development while fiercely protecting her brood. She, our SSMDWWN, was the best mother in the world. She watched her crew in band concerts, chaperoned camping trips, cheered at their sporting events, sewed costumes, hosted slumber parties, arranged weddings, and held her newborn grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was Mom, Nana, and closest friend all in one. Sheila was preceded in death by her parents; first husband, Martin "Mike" Kelsey, Jr.; husband, Davis "Scotty" Turner; son, Martin "Mike" (Jeannine) Kelsey III; sisters, Rosemary Haggerty and Kathleen Moossy, and brother-in-law, Dennis Parravano; and other relatives. She will be missed by her children, Beatrice (Lawrence) Stein of Windermere, FL, Barbara (Mark) McIntire of Sartell, MN, Margaret (Michael Teich) Kelsey of Whitefish Bay, WI, Brian (Philip Berndt) Kelsey of Fish Creek, WI, and Kathryn Turner of Los Angeles, CA; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; siblings, Patrick (Mary) Haggerty of Dallas, TX, Michael (Jean) Haggerty of Austin, TX, and Teresa Parravano of Dallas, TX; and other relatives. Sheila will be laid to rest beside her husband, Scotty, in the columbarium at Bayside Cemetery in the Town of Sevastopol, WI with a private committal for family. Her life will be honored with a memorial Mass prayed at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, August 7, 2026 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 110 N. 5th Avenue, Sturgeon Bay, WI 54235 with Fr. Rev. Donald D. Fenner

Obituary for Donald Dean Fenner With sadness we announce the passing of Reverend Donald Dean Fenner. We are grateful for the many years of life. Don’s extraordinary faith, quick wit, and gracious spirit touched countless lives. He was born April 25,1929 and died peacefully at his home in Green Bay on July 31, 2026. Don was raised on his family's dairy farm in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, where the values of hard work, family, and faith shaped his character and guided his life. He graduated from Fond du Lac Goodrich High School; North Central College, Naperville, IL; and the Evangelical Theological Seminary, Naperville IL. He entered United Methodist Ministry in the Wisconsin Conference (EUB) in 1949 serving ministerial appointments at Horicon-Juneau; Madison; Racine; NE District Superintendent; Waukesha; and Janesville. He retired to Fish Creek WI in 1992 and lived there for 25 years. During this time he enjoyed spending many seasons working the front desk at Gordon Lodge and making maple syrup in the spring. Don embodied a servant-leader style of ministry throughout his life. In his later years, while living in Green Bay, Don found joy in leading a Bible Study for neighbors in his apartment complex. He was known for his humor, compassion, and genuine care for others, always treating people with dignity and respect as he sought to make disciples of Jesus Christ. In reflecting upon what made him so unique is noting his response to this question from a neighbor, “How do you stay kind to people who don’t like you?” His response, “Their behavior is a reflection of their character …not permission to lose mine.” Don was married to his soulmate Norma Oppedahl Fenner for nearly seventy years. Together, they found joy in God’s creation - visiting gardens, admiring flowers, watching birds, appreciating the beauty of the natural world, and traveling. But what was most important was their family. They intentionally invested in each member of the family, creating a home where love, joy, and each person's well-being were cherished. This included playing games (especially “Hand and Foot”) as a must event during many family gatherings. Don was preceded in death by his wife, Norma (Oppedahl) Fenner, his parents Edward and Ada (Zimmerman) Fenner; his brother Richard (Gertrude) Fenner. David Pape

David Merlin Pape, 83, of Sturgeon Bay, WI, passed away on Tuesday, July, 28th, 2026 at home. Dave was born on August 28, 1942, in Sturgeon Bay to the late Doris (LaVine) and Merlin “Tarz” Pape as the youngest of 3 children. Dave adored his older sisters Sherron and Pat. He grew up on 2nd Avenue, in Sturgeon Bay, and as the story always went, in his younger years they didn’t have running water. His mom would heat up bath water from the rain barrel once a week. As the youngest, he’d be the last to bathe and by then, the bath water was cold and dark. He was in a 3rd Avenue rooftop gang. He’d run across the bay over the railroad bridge and across the tops of the wooden barrels of cherries stacked on the docks. His bedroom had a penny tile floor and was wallpapered with uncut sheets of baseball cards that his mother got for him. Best of all, he learned how to build a fire from their neighbor, Chief Roy Oshkosh. Even up to his last days, Dave would make sure his family knew the history. He spent a lot of time at the youth center where he was mentored by Jim Larson. Jim Larson’s commitment to the youth of Sturgeon Bay left a lifelong impression on Dave, leading him to follow in Jim’s footsteps many decades later. He loved recounting the stories of his undefeated 8-0 Clipper football team under the legendary coach Al Mancheski. Dave recalled how he struggled as a football player. He couldn’t see the ball and frequently drew criticism from the coach. Coach Mancheski (an optometrist by trade) brought him to his office, discovered that Dave was nearly blind in one eye, fitted him with glasses, and with newfound vision, he began to excel in the game of football. We are all going to miss his stories. In 1958, at Sturgeon Bay High School, he became smitten with an upperclassman named Patti Boes who, according to family lore, liked to race cars with the guys and read long novels in the bleachers during Dave’s football and basketball games. On July 4th, 1964, Dave and Patti were married at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Sturgeon Bay. Soon after, Michael came along, then Colleen a year later. Daniel and Stephen rounded out the family. They made their home on Rhode Island Street. Dave’s career in the Merchant Marines on the Great Lakes with Columbia Transportation (Oglebay Norton) began in 1967. He worked his way up from tunnel work, eventually becoming a Chief Engineer. He would have made his father-in-law, Arnold Boes, who had held the same position, proud. This career meant that Dave was often not at home for family celebrations and holidays. The family adapted, planning family events like children’s birthday parties, baptisms, first communions, and even Christmas around his time off the boats. Dave and Patti had a tradition of having a white, flocked Christmas tree, so it would last until February so the family could celebrate Christmas when Dave returned home from the Lakes. Dave always expressed his admiration for Patti and her sacrifices. As difficult as it was for Patti to work and raise four children on her own while he was on the Great Lakes most of the year, she never wavered in her support and encouraged Dave to continue gaining experience, and to continue to study to obtain his Chief Engineer license. He was always so grateful to have Patti as his wife and the love of his life. After 40 years on the lakes, Dave retired and finally returned home to Patti. With Patti’s blessing, he invested himself in what was then called the Jim Larson Boys & Girls Club, named after his childhood mentor. During his years with the Boys and Girls Club of Door County, Dave had served in nearly every role at the club - from director to janitor, to board member. But, what Dave truly loved was being involved with the annual golf outing committee. He loved hosting guests and friends in his home for the event. He loved hitting the road for sponsorships and donations and talking to people about the event. He enjoyed the friendships, the meetings, the conversations, and above all, the spirit of community that the event brought about – and that it wasn’t just long-time locals that were getting involved. Dave enjoyed his time with Neighbor to Neighbor Volunteer Caregivers of Door County and the Kiwanis Club. He spent time serving as president for both organizations for some time. He was an active member of the Kiwanis Club until his last days. He believed strongly in the mission of both of these organizations and the people involved. In 2013, he was awarded the Lifetime of Service Golden Heart Award for Door County. This past spring, Dave was nominated again for a Golden Heart Award, this time for Adult Volunteer of the Year by the Boys and Girls Club. He was humbled and moved to tears by this recognition. During his retirement, beyond volunteering in our community, he took on a job with Walmart, enjoying new friends, old and young. One of the roles he found most important was tending to the lawn and garden department in the spring and summer. He was determined to offer the most beautiful and healthy plants in town. Dave found his time at Walmart to be a wonderful social outlet as people began to stop in just for a visit and maybe to pick something up from the store. During some of his post-retirement winters, Dave was asked to join various crews during winter lay up at the shipyard to help with repair work on ship engines and conveyor systems due to his deep knowledge and background as Chief Engineer. He enjoyed this opportunity to be aboard the ships and enjoy the camaraderie again. The crews loved having him there with them as a mentor. Dave deeply cherished family. To him family meant anyone who was important to someone he loved. We have to call attention to the strong, lifelong bonds formed with fellow shipmates and their families, and how important they have been to Dave and our family. Dave was preceded in death by his wife of 51 years and love of his life, Patti. Dave’s greatest work and act of service was dedicating himself to giving her the best care and love while she lived with cancer. This meant the world to his children. They are now reunited in their everlasting love and the giant hole that was left in his heart 11 years ago with Patti’s loss has been restored. Dave was also preceded in death by his beloved sisters Sherron Schroeder, Pat Cortez, and baby sister Emma Ann. Dave is survived by son Michael D. Pape (Nancy) of Glendale, AZ, daughter M. Colleen Kollberg (Wade) of Appleton, WI, son Daniel D. Pape (Jessica) of Spring Green, WI, son Stephen D. Pape (Beth) of Oconomowoc, WI. Dave is further survived by grandchildren Michelle Pape-Krueger (Joey Kolenc), Ryan Krueger (Heidi), Annica Pape (Paul Zweifel), Averie Pape, Curt Hibbard (Darby), Nathaniel Kollberg (Kenzie Kudrna), Aaron Kollberg (Avi VanHooreweghe), Luke Pape (Kayla Potter), Sam Pape, Monty Pape, Hailey (Max) Sloan, Hannah Krause and great-grandchildren Rosalyn, Soraya, Avril, Stormie, Meeka, Elaina Jo, Bernadette, and soon-to-be-born Clover, along with his beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws, and many good friends. A special thank you to the kind and compassionate care he received from Door County Medical Center - especially Dr Antonio, Dr Hogan and Taylor Kubiak APN. Funeral services will be 11:00 am Wednesday, Aug 5, 2026, at St. Joseph Church in Sturgeon Bay with the Rev. William Brunner and Deacon Bill Gerl presiding. A visitation will be held at Forbes Funeral Home on Tuesday from 5:00 to 8:00 pm and at the church on Wednesday from 10:00 am until the time of service. Dave spoke often about how many children the club served and how it profoundly impacts the lives of Door County’s children. During the last several weeks, he was still actively engaged in fundraising for the club’s August 10th event. In the spirit of Dave, let’s give him his kind of send off. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the Boys and Girls Club of Door County in Dave’s Honor today.

Richard Otto Schultz, MD

As a young man, Dick and a friend came to Door County with the adventuresome idea to work the cherry harvest. Despite their hard work, they learned they were in debt to the owner for room and board. In the middle of the night, they left and hopped a boxcar back to Racine. But the Door County 'cherry bug' had bitten Dick and his love for this beautiful place. His fondness for Cherries remained with him as he pursued his medical career. Born in Racine, Wisconsin, Dick received his undergraduate and master's degrees at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. He graduated from Albany Medical College, followed by an internship and ophthalmology residency at the University of Iowa. Upon completion of his training, he served three years in Phoenix, Arizona, as a Lt. Commander and Chief of Ophthalmology with the Indian Health Service-Division of Public Health. While in Phoenix, he was devoted to improving ophthalmic care for the indigenous community. These formative years, and his subsequent cornea and external disease fellowship with the Procter Foundation for Research at the University of California, San Francisco were the catalyst and foundation for his ophthalmology career. Following a brief period in private practice in Phoenix, Arizona, Dick redefined his career goals. He embarked on his pursuit of academic ophthalmology, education and basic and clinical research. In 1964, he was appointed Associate Professor and Chair of Ophthalmology to the then Marquette University - School of Medicine, Milwaukee. In 1970, the medical school became the Medical College of Wisconsin. As Chairman, Dick met the many challenges facing the growing ophthalmology department, including the recruitment of a world renowned clinical and research faculty, expanding clinical space and establishing sound fiscal footing. Dick's vision encompassed academic and clinical ophthalmology, post graduate training programs, cutting edge research and excellence in patient ophthalmic care. Through his leadership and persistence, tireless efforts in securing community financial support, his vision was finally realized with the opening of the Eye Institute of the Medical College of Wisconsin in 1976. The Eye Institute stood as the first building of the new Milwaukee Medical Center Complex. The Eye Institute and its programs have served as a prototype for other Eye Institutes, with a national and international reputation. Dick served as Professor and Chair of Ophthalmology for 33 years. He was committed to supporting premier ophthalmology residency and fellowship education, maintaining accomplished faculty and national ophthalmology NIH research grants. Dick's love of Door County led him purchase a home in the 1970's where he acquired farmland which he developed into a cherry orchard. What started as humble beginnings, with mere sticks in the ground, blossomed into an anticipated record harvest this year, just as his vision of the Eye Institute had come to fruition. Upon retirement, he and his wife, Diane, moved to Door County. Dick devoted himself to the Cherry orchards and to watercolor painting. These paintings have become treasured gifts to family and friends. Dick was predeceased by his son, Richard P. Schultz. He is survived by his wife, Diane Haldane; his children, Henry R. Schultz (Patricia G.) and Karen Schultz Shimshak (Thomas M.), their mother, Jane Davidson Schultz Klockman; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
