Rockers end successful first week on down note

The Green Bay Rockers ended their first week of the 2025 in first place in their division with a 4-2 record after dropping their Saturday matinee against Wausau 6-3.

Trailing 1-0, the Rockers took the lead in the fourth inning behind two out-producing runs. The Rockers scored once more in the top of the seventh inning after the Woodchucks tied the game on another sacrifice fly. The Woodchucks took over from there, recording four hits and taking advantage of two errors to form a four-run rally the Rockers would have no answer for.

David Ballenilla recorded three hits and Cayden Sheffield added two more to lead the Rockers in the hitting department. Two others recorded at least one hit.

Ramirez Leads Glory to Victory Saturday Afternoon

The Green Bay Glory defended their home turf on Saturday afternoon, defeating visiting Dekalb County United 4-2 at the Banta Bowl in Appleton.  The game would enter halftime 0-0 with each team having just a few shots on goal, but each keeper having protected their net.

Dekalb would take the lead early in the second half when in the 47' goal by Ian Fergeson.  The Glory however would answer quickly with a Joshua Johanson goal in the 55', assisted by Osvaldo (Ozzy) Ramirez.  Just a few minutes later, the Glory would go up a man when the United lost Zach Heitkemper to a red card with a hard takedown a foot shy from giving the Glory a Penalty kick at the top of the box.  Ozzy Ramirez take the free kick, and slide it past the right end of the United wall and tucked in into the net giving the Glory a 2-1 lead.

The united would score again in the 70' minute to tie it a 2-2.  Ozzy Ramirez would put the Glory ahead for good in the 76' with a soft touch in off an assist from Dominic Lagona who got behind the United keeper.  An 89' goal by Elliot Bordini, with an assist by Michael Rohrman, set the final score at 4-2.

Elliot was a driving force behind formation of the men's team after he watched his mother, Karry Geocaris, co-found and play for the women's team.  Kerry Geocaris also coaches the men's team alongside Patrick Birder.

Over a dozen athletes qualify for WIAA State Track Meet

Several track athletes extended their season by at least one more week after qualifying for the WIAA State Track Meet at Friday's sectionals.

In Marinette, more than dozen Division 2 athletes qualified, including Kewaunee Hannah Miller's win in the 1600m. Miller also qualified in the 800m. She joins Southern Door's Elise Jackson (110m hurdles and 300m hurdles), and Luxemburg-Casco's Mason Trimburger (110m hurdles and 300m hurdles) as the only local athletes that will be competing in multiple events at the state meet. Other state qualifiers include Luxemburg-Casco's Kyan Lynts (1600m) and Claire Duchateau (3200m), Southern Door's Cruz Cavillo (discus), and Sturgeon Bay's Cedar Tomberlin (triple jump), Oliver Carmody (pole vault), Ella Tarkowski (100m), and Cady Carlson (400m). The Kewaunee girls and the Luxemburg-Casco boys tied for the highest team place in the sectional at 10th place.

In Marathon, Algoma pole vaulters Brennan Buckman and Estella Marrero were the area's only Division 3 state qualifiers, hitting 12-09 and 9-06 in pole vault respectively to punch their ticket to LaCrosse next weekend.

Additional athletes could be added to the state meet if they hit certain benchmarks. Regardless of where they finished in Friday's meet, dozens of athletes acheived personal bests to end their season.

Bays pound Cubs under the lights

Sister Bay had 19 hits and took advantage of six errors to beat Institute 25-9 Friday night in Door County Baseball League action.

The Bays scored at least three runs in five different innings, including five in the third, seven in the fourth, and six in the seventh. The Cubs' offense wasn't bad either, starting the game with a 3-1 run lead after the first inning thanks to RBI singles by Arthur Hocevar and Nick Peterson. The Cubs would also post two runs apiece in the fourth and sixth innings, but the deficit already stood at double digits at that point.

For the Bays, Tom Sawyer and Spencer Krause each had three hits and four RBI in the win. Casey Weddig, Rylan Caldecott, and Carl Burgess also had two RBI performances. Sawyer Johnson joined Sawyer and Krause with three hits while nine of the ten players recorded at least one hit in the game. Krause earned the win on the mound, allowing six runs (4 ER) on seven hits while striking out four.

For the Cubs, Josh Pflieger, Frankie Ash, Jaeger Brusky all had two hits in the loss while Peterson and Juston Williams each had two RBI. Sam Zirbel took the loss for the Cubs, allowing nine runs (8 ER) on 11 hits while striking out two.

The two teams combined for 10 errors in the game, leading to 10 unearned runs between the two staffs.

Blizzard freeze Freight

The Green Bay Blizzard scored two touchdowns in each of the final three quarters to beat the Fisher Freight on Friday 55-39.

After trailing by two at the end of the first quarter, the Blizzard took control from there, including the third quarter when they outscored the Freight 14-0. They scored on four unanswered drives in the middle of the game to tilt the contest in their favor.

Max Meylor led the Blizzard through the air and on the ground, throwing for 100 yards and rushing for another 29 while accumulating five total touchdowns. Jalyn Cagle caught two touchdowns and rushed for another in the Blizzard win.

They will be at home again on June 6th.

Rattlers Bounce Back to Beat Peoria

One night after a 10-1 loss to the Peoria Chiefs at Neuroscience Group Field, the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers rebounded to defeat the Chiefs 10-1 on Friday night at home.  Blake Burke had the first four-hit game by a Timber Rattler this season and Eduardo Garcia added three hits, two doubles and a home run, to support a strong seven-inning start by Tanner Gillis.

Garcia put Wisconsin (23-26) up 1-0 with a one-out, homer in the bottom of the first.  The homer was Garcia’s seventh of the season.  He has hit four homers against the Chiefs in 2025.

Later in the first, the Rattlers had the bases loaded with two outs.  Yhoswar Garcia reached on an infield single to drive in a run.  An errant throw to first let a second run score on the play for a 3-0 lead.

Burke made it 4-0 with a two-out, RBI single in the bottom of the second.

Peoria (19-29) got on the scoreboard with an unearned run in the top of the third inning.  Johnfrank Salazar reached on an error with one out and stole second.  Jon Jon Gazdar singled to right to score Salazar.  Gillis ended the rally when he got the next batter to ground into an inning-ending double play.

Gillis would pitch seven innings – his longest start as a professional.  He allowed an unearned run on four hits, walked none, and struck out one batter to earn his first Midwest League victory.

The Rattlers added to their lead in the bottom of the fifth inning with two more runs after loading the bases with no outs.  Tayden Hall knocked in the first run with a ground out to first.  Daniel Guilarte got the second run home with a fielder’s choice.

In the sixth inning, three consecutive extra-base hits led to three more runs for the Timber Rattlers.  Jadher Areinamo and Eduardo Garcia started the inning with back-to-back doubles.  Blake Burke was next, and he tripled.  A wild pitch let him score for a 9-1 lead.

Garcia and Burke combined to set up Wisconsin’s final run.  Garcia doubled in the eighth and Burke collected his fourth hit of the night with an infield single to put runners at the corners with no outs.  Baez tapped into a 4-6-3 double play to score Garcia.

Aaron Rund and Tanner Shears both worked a scoreless inning out of the Rattlers bullpen to close out the game and put the Rattlers up 3-1 in the series.

Burke was 4-for-4 with a walk, three runs scored, and two RBI on Friday night.  He is 17-for-38 (.447) against Peoria this season.

Game five of the series is Saturday night at Neuroscience Group Field.  Jaron DeBerry (0-1, 9.00) is set to start for the Timber Rattlers.  Peoria has handed Chen-Wei Lin (0-1, 1.80) their starting assignment.  Game time is 6:40pm.

Baseball round-up: Errors Doom Eagles on U-102.1

Only two local teams will advance to the WIAA Baseball Tournament following Thursday's games. Kewaunee and Gibraltar/Washington Island will join them in the regional semifinal round.

The Southern Door Eagles season came to a close Thursday night at the hands of the Mishicot Indians 4-2 on U-1021 in Brussels.

Other scores include Sevastopol winning on the road against Port Edwards 12-8, Luxemburg-Casco falling at home to Waupaca 7-1, Algoma beating Howards Grove 3-1, and Sturgeon Bay losing to Marinette 9-1.

Local athletes hope to qualify for state track meet

Local athletes from all seven high schools hope a ticket to LaCrosse is in the cards when they compete at Friday's WIAA Sectional Meets.

On Tuesday, the Luxemburg-Casco boys track team paced the local teams at the Division 2 Chilton Regional. The boys scored 137.5 points, beating second-place Denmark and third-place Southern Door. The Eagles came in second place on the girls' side with 116.66, about nine points less than first-place Chilton. The Algoma boys track team was the top-performing team at Tuesday's Hilbert Regional ahead of this weekend's WIAA Sectional Meet. The Wolves boys scored 82 points to finish in third place. No other team finished higher than sixth place overall (Gibraltar girls).

The top four athletes in each event advanced to their respective sectional meet.

Spartans soccer stung by Hornets

Two early goals given up was too much to come back from in a 3-1 Luxemburg-Casco loss to Green Bay Preble on the soccer pitch on Thursday.

The Hornets scored twice in the opening seven minutes on tallies from Frida Dax and Olivia Wiernasz. Aaliyah Wallace cut the lead in half with an unassisted goal in the 54th minute, but the Spartans gave it back in the 76th minute on a Lola Dax strike. Spartans goalkeepers were peppered with shots all night long with Teagan Gunderson accumulating eight saves while Ashley Fameree garnered 11 saves.

In other soccer action, Seymour got a goal in both halves to defeat Sturgeon Bay 2-0 on Thursday night. Next up for the Clippers is Pius High School from Milwaukee on Friday night.

The rest of the weekend slate includes Baileys Harbor visiting Kolberg, Maplewood traveling to Egg Harbor, and Washington Island hosting West Jacksonport for 1:30 p.m. matchups.

Chiefs Put Out Wisconsin's Fire with a 7-Run Surge

Trey Paige hit a grand slam and drove in five runs for the Peoria Chiefs in a 10-1 victory over the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers on Thursday night at Neuroscience Group Field.  The Chiefs broke a 1-1 tie with seven runs in the top of the sixth inning to get their first win of the series.

Peoria (19-28) loaded the bases on three straight singles to open the top of the second.  Wisconsin starting pitcher Tyson Hardin escaped serious damage in the inning by getting Johnfrank Salazar to ground into a 6-4-3 double play that scored the runner from third.  Tre Richardson popped out to end the frame.

In the top of third, Hardin issued two walks, his first since a start at Cedar Rapids on April 26.  He had not walked a batter in 30-2/3 innings prior to this evening.  However, he was able to work a scoreless third and a perfect fourth inning to hold the deficit to one run.

Wisconsin (22-26) broke through against Chiefs starting pitcher Gerardo Salas in the bottom of the fifth inning.  Marco Dinges hit a sinking line drive to center that went for a lead-off triple when Won-Bin Cho made a dive for the ball and missed it.  Juan Baez drove in Dinges with the tying run with a sacrifice fly.

Ryan Birchard, who worked a perfect fifth inning in relief of Hardin, ran into trouble immediately in the top of the sixth as two singles and a walk loaded the bases.  Then, Birchard walked Zach Levenson to force in the go-ahead run.  Michael Curriale followed with a soft single over the drawn-in infield to make it 3-1.

Birchard bounced back to retire the next two batters before another walk to Ian Petrutz forced in a run.  That walk made it 4-1 and knocked Birchard out of the game.

Paige hit the first page from reliever Jeferson Figueroa over the wall in center for a grand slam and an 8-1 lead.

The Rattlers would load the bases with two outs in the bottom of the sixth, but Salas concluded his night a grounder to short to keep the Rattlers off the board in the sixth.

Peoria added two more runs in the top of the eighth inning.  Yerlin hit a batter, walked a batter, and threw three wild pitches to let in the first run.  Paige capped his five-RBI night with an RBI single.

Darlin Saladin picked up the save with three scoreless innings out of the Peoria bullpen.

Jadher Areinamo had two of Wisconsin’s four hits with a single and a double.

Game four of the series is Thursday night at Neuroscience Group Field.  Tanner Gillis (0-1, 3.00) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers.  Cade Winquest is set to start for the Chiefs.

Packers announce Family Night details

A summer tradition returns to Lambeau Field on August 2nd.

The Green Bay Packers announced details for their 24th Packers Family Night on Wednesday. The annual event marks the one week mark of Packers Training Camp, which kicks off the week before on Wednesday, July 23rd. The event is a glorified practice, but it will still feature many of the gameday elements fans have come to expect, albeit at a much more family-friendly price. Doors for the event will open at 5:30 p.m., with the team taking the field for warmups at 7 p.m. and practice beginning at 7:30. Tickets go on sale on June 16th.

The full training camp schedule and the date of the Annual Meeting of shareholders will be announced in the near future.

Woodruff Goes Seven in Wisconsin Win

Brandon Woodruff allowed one unearned run over seven innings to pick up a complete-game victory for the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers in a rain-shortened 5-1 win over the Peoria Chiefs on Wednesday afternoon at Neuroscience Group Field.  Woodruff needed just 74 pitches in his rehabilitation start for the Rattlers.

Wisconsin (22-25) grabbed the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning.  Jadher Areinamo doubled, and Eduardo Garcia walked to put two on with no outs.  Blake Burke moved Areinamo to third with a flyball to right.  Marco Dinges drove in Areinamo with a sacrifice fly to right for the 1-0 lead.

The Chiefs (18-28) scored an unearned run against Woodruff in the top of the fifth inning.  Brayden Jobert singled to start the inning.  He moved to second on a ground out because he was running on the pitch. Then, Miguel Villarroel sent a high chopper to  third.  Daniel Guilarte fielded the ball near the bag and made a wild throw to first.  Jobert scored on the error to tie the game.

Tayden Hall started the Wisconsin half of the fifth with a double to center.  Guilarte earned redemption moments later with a one-out single to center to score Hall with the go-ahead run.

The Rattlers added to their advantage in the sixth inning.  Burke singled and Dinges walked with one out.  Juan Baez followed with a soft fly to right for a single.  Burke tried to score on the play.  The one-hop throw from Won-Bin Cho would have been in time, but the throw got by catcher Ryan Campos.  Hancel Rincon, the starting pitcher for the Chiefs, was backing up the play and attempted a diving tag on Burke at the plate, but was just a little late to allow Burke to score.

Hall was next, and he cracked a double that drove in two insurance runs for a 5-1 lead.

Woodruff went back out for the top of the seventh inning.  He allowed a two-out double before recording his sixth strikeout of the game.  The tarp went on the field before the bottom of the seventh inning started, and the game was called after a thirty-minute delay.  Woodruff didn’t walk a batter and allowed five hits to earn the win.

Game three of the series is Thursday night.  Tyson Hardin (4-1, 1.21) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers.  Gerardo Salas (1-4, 8.92) is set to start for Peoria.  Game time is 6:40 pm.

Glory splits Chicago House AC matchups

Both programs earned routs on Sunday with the Glory women topping Chicago House AC 4-1 while the men fell to Chicago House AC 7-2 in the nightcap.

In the women's game, Ryley Winrich tallied the lone goal in the first half, while Trudy Quidzinski's second-half brace was complemented by an Emily McCarthy goal to give the Glory their second straight rout to start the season.

It was a different story in the men's game. The Glory found themselves down 3-1 at the break, with Dennis Nyame scoring the lone goal for the home side. Trent Kazlauskas scored the second goal, but it was not nearly enough to take down a tough House side.

Wisconsin Drops Series Finale in South Bend

The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers fell behind the South Bend Cubs early on Sunday night at Four Winds Field and could never climb back into the game as they missed a big opportunity and lost 8-3 in the final game of the six-game set.  The Rattlers had won the first four games against the Cubs but lost the final two games to fall back to five games under .500.

South Bend (12-33) scored three times in the third inning after two outs to take the lead.  Wisconsin starting pitcher Jaron DeBerry, in his Timber Rattlers debut, had allowed singles to Jefferson Rojas and Cristian Hernandez with one out before he got the second out on a liner to left.  Then, Drew Bowser lined a single to center knock in Rojas with the first run of the game.  The Cubs would pull a double steal to get two runners into scoring position and Reginald Preciado delivered both runners with a single to left on a 1-2 pitch for a 3-0 lead.

Hernandez added an RBI triple in the bottom of the fifth inning against reliever Patricio Aquino.

Wisconsin (20-25) struggled to get anything going against South Bend starting pitcher Kenten Egbert through the first five innings.  Egbert entered the game with an 0-5 record and an ERA of 8.00.  Plus, he had an ERA of 11.25 in his three previous starts this month.

That changed in the sixth as the Rattlers loaded the bases with no outs on a single by Jadher Areinamo, a double by Eduardo Garcia, and a walk to Blake Burke to end Egbert’s night.

Joe Nahas entered from the Cubs bullpen and got two quick outs on a strikeout and a popup.  Then, he uncorked a wild pitch that allowed Areinamo to score and walked Juan Baez to reload the bases before ending the inning on a flyout.

Tanner Shears took over for the Rattlers on the mound for the bottom of the sixth inning.  He hit Ariel Armas in the helmet with one out.  Brian Kalmer reached on an error.  Rafael Morel was hit by a pitch and the bases were loaded.  Shears walked Rojas to force in pinch-runner Miguel Pabon and threw a wild pitch that scored Kalmer.  Hernandez knocked in Morel with an infield single and the Cubs were cruising with a 7-1 lead.

Wisconsin tried to get back some momentum in the top of the seventh inning as Luiyin Alastre drew a lead-off walk against Marino Santy, went to second on a wild pitch, took third on a ground out, and scored on another wild pitch.  Areinamo also drew a walk and would score from second on a two-out single by Burke to make the score 7-3.

That hit by Burke was Wisconsin’s only hit with runners in scoring position in the game.  They stranded nine runners and went 1-for-10.

Hernandez, the #11 prospect in the Chicago Cubs minor league system, wrapped the scoring with an RBI triple in the bottom of the eighth.  Hernandez was 4-for-5 with three RBI on Sunday.  He had been 4-for-19 with eight strikeouts in the first five games of the series.

The Timber Rattlers are off on Monday.  They return to action on Tuesday night when they host the Peoria Chiefs in game one of a six-game series at Neuroscience Group Field.  Milwaukee Brewers pitcher José Quintana is scheduled to make a rehabilitation appearance as the starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers.  Peoria has named Jose Davila (2-2, 7.01) as their starter.  Game time is 6:40pm CDT.

The games will be played at the Banta Bowl on the campus of Lawrence University in Appleton.

Late Rally Short-Circuits in Loss at South Bend

The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers were set up for a late, big comeback on Saturday at Four Winds Field with the bases loaded, a run in, and no outs in the eighth inning as they tried to rally from a 5-1 deficit.  However, misread on the bases led to the end of the threat and a 6-2 South Bend Cubs victory over the Rattlers.

South Bend (11-33) jumped to a 2-0 lead in the first inning.  Jefferson Rojas doubled to start the inning.  Cristian Hernandez followed with an RBI single and moved to second on an error.  Andy Garriola cashed in Hernandez with an RBI single for the two-run advantage.

Wisconsin (20-24) halved their deficit in the top of the second inning when Yhoswar Garcia drove in Juan Baez from third with an infield grounder.

The Cubs went back up by two in the bottom of the second on back-to-back, one-out, doubles by Brian Kalmer and Rafel Morel.

The starting pitchers kept both offenses in check after that.

Wisconsin starter Tanner Gillis set down fourteen of the final sixteen batters he faced before leaving after six innings.  South Bend starter Ryan Gallagher recorded nine strikeouts and allowed two hits over his six innings.

In the bottom of the seventh, the Cubs picked up a pair of insurance runs against reliever Bayden Root, who walked Rafael Morel to start the inning.  Morel stole second and Rojas singled to drive him home.  Then, Hernandez had a hit-and-run single to right to put Rojas on third base.  Root would induce Edgar Alvarez to ground into a double play.  However, Hernandez scored for a 5-1 lead.

Kenyi Perez, who had pitched the seventh inning without incident in relief of Gallagher, ran into trouble by losing the strike zone against Wisconsin in the eighth inning.  He walked Daniel Guilarte, Jadher Areinamo, and Eduardo Garcia to load the bases with no outs.  Blake Burke drew a fourth consecutive walk to force in Guilarte.

That walk pulled Wisconsin to within 5-2 and chased Perez from the game.  The Cubs called Evan Taylor into the game to face Marco Dinges, the go-ahead run at the plate.  That was when chaos was unleashed on the bases.

Dinges lifted a flyball to shallow left on the first pitch from Taylor.  The ball was caught for the first out and Areinamo bluffed for the plate but wasn’t trying to score.  However, Garcia broke for third after the catch after reading that Areinamo was trying to score.  At one point, all three Wisconsin base runners were in rundowns before Areinamo was tagged out between third and home on a 7-2-4-2-5-2-3-6 double play.

Taylor got Baez on a routine grounder to short to end the eighth.

South Bend added another insurance run in the bottom of the eighth when Root threw a wild pitch to allow Miguel Pabon to score from third.

The Rattlers went down in order against Taylor in the top of the ninth.

Wisconsin had three hits in the game and went 0-for-10 with runners in scoring position as their four-game winning streak came to an end.

The Cubs snapped their six-game losing streak with the victory over the Rattlers.

The series finale is Sunday night at Four Winds Field.  Jaron DeBerry will make his Timber Rattlers debut as the starting pitcher for Wisconsin.  The Cubs have named Kenten Egbert (0-5, 8.00) as their starter.  Game time is 6:05pm CDT.

Rattlers Pitch Their Way Past South Bend

The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers received stellar performances from all three of their pitchers and got a couple of clutch hits on Friday night in a 2-1 victory over the South Bend Cubs at Four Winds Field.  Ryan Birchard, Yerlin Rodriguez, and Jesús Broca combined to allow one run on five hits with ten strikeouts in the victory/

The teams traded solo homers with South Bend (10-33) taking their first lead of the series on a one-out shot to right by Edgar Alvarez in the bottom of the fifth.  Wisconsin (xx-xx) tied the game when Hedbert Pérez launched a long, lead-off homer to right-center in the top of the fifth.

Birchard, the Wisconsin starting pitcher, faced his first jam of the game in the bottom of the fifth when he issued his only walk and gave up a single with one out.  Birchard escaped the situation with a flyout to right and a foul pop to first to keep the game tied.

Jadher Areinamo started the Wisconsin sixth inning with a walk, and he moved to second on a wild pitch.  Marco Dinges stepped to the plate with two outs and Areinamo still at second when he muscled a line drive into shallow left to drive in Areinamo with the go-ahead run.

Birchard went back out for the sixth inning and retired the Cubs in order.  Friday’s start marked the first time Birchard has completed six innings as a professional.  He matched his professional, single-game high for strikeouts with seven and only walked one as he turned the 2-1 lead over to the bullpen.

Yerlin Rodriguez was first up for the Rattlers relief corps.  He would retire all six batters he faced, including two via the strikeout, to turn that 2-1 lead over to Jesús Broca for the bottom of the ninth.

The left-handed Broca, in his first Midwest League save opportunity, walked the left-hand hitting Alvarez to start the ninth and fell behind Andy Garriola, who had seven homers on the season, including a grand slam against Wisconsin on Tuesday night in game one of the series, with two balls outside the strike zone.

Garriola hit the next pitch hard, but the one-hopper up the middle was hit right to where second baseman Juan Baez was playing.  Baez fielded the ball and started a 4-6-3 double play to bring the Rattlers to within one out of their first four-game winning streak of the season.

The drama wasn’t completely done.  Broca ran the count full to Reginald Preciado before getting to swing and miss for strike three to end the game and earn his first Midwest League save.

Birchard earned his first Midwest League victory with his first professional quality start.

Dinges has driven in at least one run in all four games he has played for the Rattlers since his promotion from the Carolina Mudcats on Tuesday.

Game five of the series is Saturday night at Four Winds Field.  Tanner Gillis (0-0, 1.50) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers.  South Bend has named Ryan Gallagher (1-2, 4.01) as their starter.  Game time is set for 3:05pm CDT.

Two big innings by St. Mary Catholic led to the season-ending loss for Gibraltar/Washington Island softball on Thursday, losing the game 12-2 in five innings.

Sturgeon Bay also saw their season end in five innings on Thursday, losing their matchup to Kiel 14-0.

Several other teams took advantage of the break between the regular season and the tournament to get some extra at-bats in.

The Kewaunee softball team scored at least two runs in each of the final four innings played en route to a six-inning, 11-1 win over Crivitz on Thursday.

Despite outhitting their opponents 7-3, the Algoma softball team was walked off by Peshtigo 3-2 Thursday night.

The Sevastopol softball team clubbed three homers, but it was not enough to beat Southern Door as they lost 10-6 on Thursday.

Hardin Shows His Quality...Again

Tyson Hardin keeps throwing strikes for the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers.  The right-hander allowed one run, walked none, and struck out eight to earn his fourth win of the season as the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers beat the South Bend Cubs 5-2 at Four Winds Field on Thursday night.  Hardin has amassed 48 strikeouts against four walks in 44-2/3 innings with Wisconsin this season.

Jadher Areinamo put the Timber Rattlers (19-23) on top with a home run to start the game.  Areinamo took a 1-1 pitch from Erian Gonzalez to right for an opposite field homer, his fifth home run of the season.  Eduardo Garcia and Blake Burke followed with singles to put runner on the corners.  Marco Dinges knocked in Garcia with a single for a 2-0 lead.

Yhoswar Garcia added to the lead with a two-out, RBI double in the fourth inning.

Hardin cruised through the early stages of the game as he retired the first eleven batters he faced, including five on strikeouts.  A two-out error in the bottom of the fourth gave South Bend (10-32) their first base runner and Andy Garriola followed with a single before Hardin struck out Miguel Pabon for the final out of the frame.

The Cubs finally got to Hardin in the bottom of the fifth, and it could have been a little worse than one run.  Drew Bowser and Brian Kalmer singled with one out.  Then, Kalmer got caught too far from first on his secondary lead and Dinges fired a strike to Burke covering at first for a 2-3 pickoff, the second in as many days for Dinges behind the plate.

Rafael Morel would single to drive in Bowser to cut into Wisconsin’s lead, but Hardin ended the frame with his eighth strikeout to keep the Cubs from any thoughts of a comeback in the inning.

Wisconsin got that run back plus one more in the top of the sixth as they loaded the bases with no outs against Chase Watkins.  Juan Baez grounded into a 6-4-3 double play to score the runner from third.  Then, Hedbert Pérez doubled in the second run for a 5-1 lead.

In the bottom of the sixth, Jefferson Rojas started the Cubs up again with a single before Edgar Alvarez hit into a 3-6-1 double play.  Another single followed before Hardin closed out the inning with a force play at second.

The Wisconsin bullpen was a little shaky but had enough to get the last nine outs.  Tanner Shears walked three in the seventh inning but helped himself by picking off the first batter he walked for the second out of the inning.

Aaron Rund faced a bases-loaded, no-out situation in the bottom of the eighth after three straight singles.  A run scored as Pabon grounded into a 6-4-3 double play.  Rund got the final out with a strikeout.

The bottom of the ninth was less stressful but still needed a defensive gem to finish the contest.  Kalmer drew a one-out walk.  Morel hit a hard grounder up the middle that deflected off Rund to Daniel Guilarte near the second base bag.  Guilarte fielded the ball, stepped on second, and fired to first to complete the game-ending double play for Wisconsin’s third win in a row.

Burke’s first inning single extended his current on-base streak to 25 games, the longest in the Midwest League this season.

Dinges, who joined the team on Tuesday, has four RBI in his first three games with Wisconsin.

Hardin has a quality start – six innings pitched with three or fewer earned runs – in his four consecutive starts.  His ERA actually went up – from 1.16 to 1.21 – after his start on Thursday.

Game four of the series is Friday night at Four Winds Field.  Ryan Birchard (0-2, 3.72) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers.  South Bend will go with Nick Dean (0-2, 5.06) as their starter.  Game time is 6:05pm CDT.

Lambeau Field gets Wisconsin/Notre Dame date

Five years after being canceled due to COVID-19, Lambeau Field knows when it will host Wisconsin and Notre Dame.

The two programs announced on Wednesday that the two teams will play on September 6th, 2026, in front of a national audience on NBC. The game will be a part of a whole Labor Day weekend of college football. The two teams were supposed to play each other in the fall of 2020, but the matchup was postponed when the Big Ten opted to play a conference-only schedule in the wake of the pandemic.

The game will officially be a home contest for the Fighting Irish as part of its Shamrock Series. This will mark the second time the Badgers have played at Lambeau Field after sneaking past LSU in 2016. This is the second of a two-game series between the Fighting Irish and the Badgers, with the Golden Domers blowing out Bucky at Soldier Field in Chicago 41-13 in 2021.

Dinges Goes Deep In Rattlers Win

Marco Dinges may be new to the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers, but he has made his presence known.  In his first start at catcher for the Rattlers on Wednesday against the South Bend Cubs at Four Winds Field, Dinges, the fourth round pick of the Milwaukee Brewers from the 2024 draft, hit a two-run home run and showed off his arm with a key pickoff to help Wisconsin to a 3-1 win over the Cubs.

Dinges, who just joined the team from the Carolina Mudcats on Tuesday, pulled a key defensive play for the Rattlers in the bottom of the fifth inning.  Wisconsin starting pitcher Anthony Flores had walked Ivan Brethowr and Cristian Hernandez with one out in the frame and left the game in favor Jeferson Figueroa.

Figueroa missed with a 1-0 pitch to Jefferson Rojas, but Dinges fired to first to pick off Hernandez for the second out, which was magnified when Figueroa walked Rojas.  However, he was able to escape the jam by retiring the next hitter and keep the game scoreless, but not for long.

Wisconsin (18-23) broke through in the top of the sixth inning.  Garcia reached on an error after a misplay on a grounder to second base.  Dinges hit the next pitch to the seats beyond the wall in left field for his first Midwest League homer and a 2-0 lead.  He had three homers and 27 RBI with Carolina before the promotion to the Rattlers.

South Bend (10-31) tried to rally in the bottom of the sixth.  Edgar Alvarez hit a lead-off home run.  Then, Figueroa walked Ariel Armas, who would steal second and third to be the tying run ninety feet from the plate with two outs.  Figueroa struck out Reivaj Garcia to end the inning and maintain the lead.

The Rattlers had two outs and none on in the top of the seventh.  Jadher Areinamo hit a ball to the gap in right-center field.  Both center fielder Andy Garriola and Brethowr in right had a chance to catch the ball, but they collided and Areinamo raced for third for a triple.  Eduardo Garcia was up next but started the at bat with an 0-1 count after the plate umpire ruled Garcia wasn’t ready in time and charged the Rattlers hitter with a pitch clock violation.

Garcia lined the first official pitch of the at bat for a single to knock in Areinamo for an insurance run.

Wisconsin’s bullpen closed out the game.  Zach Peek pitched around two hits and a walk over two scoreless innings thanks to four strikeouts.  Bayden Root worked a perfect ninth inning for his first save of the season.

Areinamo finished 3-for-5 with a run scored and a stolen base for the Rattlers.  Wisconsin has won two straight games over the Cubs.

Game three of the series is Thursday night at Four Winds Field.  Tyson Hardin (3-1, 1.16) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers.  South Bend has named Erian Rodriguez as their starter.  Rodriguez will be making his season debut with the Cubs.  First pitch is scheduled for 6:05pm CDT.

Spartans' Wallace hat trick spoiled by Marines

The Luxemburg-Casco soccer team fell to Marinette in a back-and-forth match on Tuesday night, eventually losing to their conference rivals 5-3.

Aaliyah Wallace opened the scoring eight minutes into the match for the Spartans, only to have the Marines score the next three goals. Wallace would score the other goals as a part of her hat trick in the 37th and 68th minute, but a Chloe Seymour brace would spoil the game for the Spartans.

The game could have been even more lopsided if it weren't for the play of the goalkeepers. Luxemburg-Casco's Ashley Fameree made 12 saves while Marinette's Serynitee Vanpool had eight saves.

Vikings baseball win second straight blowout

After beating Clintonville on the island 11-4 on Saturday, the Gibraltar/Washington Island baseball team followed it up with a 9-1 win over NEW Lutheran on Tuesday.

In Tuesday's victory, the Vikings scored five runs on the Blazers in the opening inning thanks to smart base running from Brady Kita and Fisher Grandy and RBI hits from Jaxin Lindgren and Hobbs Emerson. The Vikings added two more in the third inning when Emerson scored on a wild pitch and Kita singled in Liam Lindenberg. The two teams traded runs in the fourth inning, and the Vikings tacked on one more in the sixth inning. Owen Dannhausen led the way with three hits, while Kita and Lindenberg pitched in two hits apiece. Aaron Brey earned the win, but teamed up with Bennett Isaacson-Krueger and Lindenberg to allow one run (1 ER) on three hits while striking out 13.

In Saturday's win, the Vikings scored eight runs in the third inning to run away with the special home game on Washington Island. Jaxin Lindgren led the Vikings with three hits and three RBI while Aaron Brey went 2-3 with two RBI. Brey also earned the win in that game, allowing two runs (2 ER) on three hits in four innings.

Rattlers Beat South Bend and the Weather

The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers battled the South Bend Cubs, the weather, and themselves on Tuesday night at Four Winds Field.  Wisconsin took a 6-0 lead after a 28-minute delay before the start of the game and watched it evaporate in one inning.  Eduardo Garcia saved the day with a two-out RBI single in the sixth inning just before a band of rain moved through the area to end the game – after a much longer delay – in the top of the seventh to give the Rattlers a 7-6 victory.

The Timber Rattlers (17-23) grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the first.  walked and stole second with one out.  Blake Burke punched a single through the left side of the infield to put runners on the corners.  Marco Dinges, the fourth round pick of the Milwaukee Brewers in the 2024 draft, stepped to the plate for his first appearance with the Rattlers and drove in Garcia with a sacrifice fly to center.

Hedbert Pérez hit a lead-off home run to right in the top of the second to give the Rattlers a 2-0 lead.  Pérez led the Rattlers in homers with five after that home run.

Wisconsin got some big two-out hits in the top of the fourth inning to put their advantage.  Jadher Areinamo drove in the first run of the frame with a bad hop single over the shoulder of the third baseman.  Garcia was next and he launched a three-run homer to left for a 6-0 lead.  Garcia’s home run tied him with Pérez for the team lead in that category.

Patricio Aquino was the starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. He pitched three scoreless innings despite three walks and a hit batsman.  Aquino helped himself by not allowing a hit and striking out four, including Andy Garriola with the bases loaded to end the third inning.

Dikember Sánchez was first up out of the Wisconsin bullpen and walked the lead-off batter in the bottom of the fourth but stranded that runner at third.  He was not as fortunate in the fifth.

Sánchez walked the first two batters he faced in the fifth.  That was followed by an RBI, bloop single by Cristian Hernandez.  Another walk loaded the bases for Garriola again.  This time, Garriola hit a 2-2 pitch from Sánchez to the seats in left for a grand slam and Wisconsin’s lead was down to one run.

Yerlin Rodriguez was called into the game to relieve Sánchez.  He gave up a single to the first batter he faced.  A wild pitch moved that runner to second base.  Rodriguez retired the next two batters.  Then, Brian Kalmer singled to left to drive in the tying run for South Bend (10-30).

Joe Nahas, South Bend’s second pitcher who had worked a scoreless fifth inning, retired the first batter he faced in the top of the sixth before the Cubs went back to the bullpen to bring Vince Reilly into the game.

Daniel Guilarte had walked his first two times up in the game.  He made it three when Reilly missed on a 3-1 pitch.  Guilarte stole second but was still there with two outs.  Garcia delivered again for the Rattlers with a single to left on a 2-2 pitch to drive in Guilarte to put the Rattlers back in front.

Rodriguez was all business in the bottom of the sixth when he struck out the side in order.

Reilly went back out for the top of the seventh and threw one pitch for a ball to Dinges before the rain got too heavy to continue the game.  The tarp went on the field to start the delay.  The tarp would eventually be taken off the infield, but field conditions prevented the game from being restarted.  The game was made official after a ninety minute delay.

Eduardo Garcia went 2-for-3 with two runs, four RBI, and two stolen bases on the evening.

Game two of the series is scheduled for Wednesday morning at Four Winds Field.  Anthony Flores (0-2, 5.40) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers.  Evan Aschenbeck (0-1, 4.82) is set to start for the Cubs.  Game time is 10:05am CDT.

Board Approves Realignment Changes & Spring Co-ops at May Meeting

The Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association Board of Control approved five conference realignment fast-track recommendations, realignment process changes and spring cooperative teams at its meeting.

Two of the fast-track recommendations approved by the Board flips the divisions of two Milwaukee City Conference programs beginning this fall. Milwaukee Bay View moves from the Richardson Division to the Blackbourn, and the Milwaukee Pulaski/Carmen South/Carmen Southeast co-op transitions from the Blackbourn to the Richardson Division.

The Board also supported the Conference Realignment Task Force recommendation to place Wayland Academy in the 8-player football Southeastern Conference in 2025 after having competed as an independent program. Other independent programs moving into conferences for the 2025-26 seasons include St. Mary Catholic to the Bay Conference in girls golf and Stevens Point Area Senior High to the Bay Valley Lakes Conference in boys lacrosse.

There were three Conference Realignment Task Force recommendations approved by the Board beginning in 2025-26. The names of the schools appealing the Task Force plans in January and February, as well as the schools appealing the Task Force’s recommendations to the Board in March, will now be available on the Conference Realignment page of the WIAA?website. The Board also voted in favor of adding competitive history and playoff qualification in football and preference to those seeking relief through the application process to all other existing criteria to determine realignment plans as denoted on the form. The Board also supported the recommendation for the Task Force to publish two possible solutions for requests that directly impacts more than two schools to elicit specific feedback from member schools.

Another notable action item by the Board included approving the spring co-op teams for 2025-26 and 2026-27.

Among the topics reported to the Board by the executive staff were preparations for the upcoming spring tournaments; the activities associated with Student-Athlete Leadership Team; an update on the establishment of the WIAA?Foundation; ongoing efforts to recruit and retain licensed officials, including a report on a recently conducted officials’ survey presented by Brian Nichol of the Donovan Group; and technology updates on the status of the transition to Arbiter for assigning officials.

The Board also received a report by Jake Beschta, co-chair of the Calendar &?Contact Committee. The review also included updates to the Coaching Contact Flow Chart, recognizing the changes necessitated by the membership vote at the Annual Meeting was also shared, as was the corresponding Sports Medical Advisory Committee recommendations for the new Summer Coaching Contact rules.

Jim Bouché of Wausau attended his first meeting serving on the Board representing the Wisconsin Association of School Boards, replacing Mike Humke. The Board received liaison reports from Dan Rossmiller of the Wisconsin Association of School Boards and Brittany Spencer Grant of the Wisconsin Athletic Directors Association.

Clippers soccer top Resorters

The Sturgeon Bay Clippers soccer team headed south on Monday and picked up a 2-1 win over Elkhart Lake/Glenbeulah.

Shambo Wienke scored in the 7th minute to put the Clippers up 1-0. After the score, Elkhart Lake’s defense tightened up and kept it close. In the second half, Elkhart gathered a corner kick ball that deflected to tie the score at 1-1.

“It was one of those corner kicks that bounces off 4 or 5 players and finds a crazy way into the goal. It’s very difficult for a keeper to track down,” Desotelle said postgame.

Elkhart Lake was creating some chances early in the second half, so the Clippers had to retake the momentum. The momentum did switch when Yarrow Goettelman scored on a direct kick from 30 yards out.

“Yarrow’s back post bomb was a game changer," Desotelle remarked. "The keeper had no chance to defend that ball.”

The Clippers dominated possession late in the game to seal the win. Isabella Jimenez Seyfer had 4 saves in the win.

Up next for the Clippers is a conference showdown at Peshtigo on Thursday.

Rattlers Fall to Beloit in Eleven Innings

The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers built a 5-0 lead and were cruising with a 5-1 advantage through six innings against the Beloit Sky Carp on Sunday afternoon at Neuroscience Group Field.  The visitors did not go quietly and rallied to an 8-6, eleven inning win over the Rattlers.  Beloit was down to their last strike on three consecutive batters in the ninth inning but found a way to tie the game and eventually pick up the victory to give Beloit a 4-2 series win.

Wisconsin (16-23) broke on top in the bottom of the third.  Hedbert Pérez singled and took second on an error with one out.  Jadher Areinamo followed with a single, but Pérez was thrown out at the plate for the second out of the inning as Areinamo took second base.

Blake Burke was singled, and Eduardo Garcia drew a walk to load the bases.  A wild pitch by Beloit starting pitcher Jake Brooks with Juan Baez at the plate allowed Areinamo to score the first run of the game.

Baez cashed in the other two runners on base with a single for a 3-0 lead.

Tayden Hall came through with another single to get Baez to third.  Then, the throw in from the outfield got away from the cutoff man to allow Baez to score for a 4-0 lead.

The Rattlers loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the fifth inning but could only score one run as Blayberg Diaz grounded into a 6-4-3 double play.

Tanner Gillis, the Wisconsin starting pitcher in his Midwest League debut, gave up one run over six innings.  That run was an RBI double by Payton Green in the top of the sixth inning.  Gillis allowed three hits, walked two, and struck out three to put himself for a win in his first game as a Rattler.

Beloit (21-17) got closer in the seventh against José Nova, another Rattler pitcher making his Midwest League debut.  The first two batters reached on a walk and a hit batsman, with a wild pitch moving them both into scoring position.  Nova got the first out on a grounder to third, but Eric Rataczak drove in a run with a sacrifice fly.  Emaarion Boyd made it 5-3 with a single.

Bayden Root took over for Nova and picked Boyd off first to end the inning.  Root would work a perfect eighth inning to maintain the two-run lead.

The Rattlers had a chance to add to their lead in the bottom of the eighth inning with runners at the corners and one out.  However, Yhoswar Garcia hit into a 6-4-3 double play, one of four twin killings the Rattlers hit into on Sunday.

Aaron Rund got the top of the ninth and retired the first two batters on six pitches.  The game turned into torture for the Rattlers – players and fans alike – from that point.

Rund hit Garrett Forrester, and the Wisconsin defense allowed Forrester to take second on defensive indifference with Michael Snyder at the plate.  Rund had two strikes on Snyder before Snyder lined an RBI double to left.

Rataczak was at the plate with a 1-2 count to put the Sky Carp down to their last out.  Snyder was running on the pitch when Rataczak hit a foul pop down the line in left.  Shortstop Eduardo Garcia made a fine running catch, and the Rattlers were ready to celebrate the win.

However, Diaz was called for catcher interference as Rataczak hit his glove on the swing and the game continued, after a long pause to decide if Snyder should be granted third base.  Rund tried to stay loose on the mound during the delay and had to gear up again after the decision was made to have runners at the corners with two outs.

Boyd stepped in and worked the count to 3-2.  Rund missed with ball four, and Diaz missed the ball for a passed ball to allow Snyder to score the tying run.

Jesús Broca took over for Rund and hit the first batter he faced before getting a foul pop to end the inning.

Wisconsin got a lead-off walk in the bottom of the ninth but could do nothing with it as the game went to extra innings.

Ryan Ignoffo’s sacrifice fly in the top of the tenth gave the Sky Carp the lead.

Eduardo Garcia responded with a lead-off double in the bottom of the tenth to score pinch-runner Daniel Guilarte from second base to tie the game.  However, Wisconsin could not score Garcia with the winning run and the game moved to the eleventh.

Broca walked Forrester, who reached base five times in the game, and gave up a one-out single to load the bases for Boyd.  Broca walked Boyd on a 3-2 pitch to force in the go-ahead run.

The Sky Carp added an important insurance run on a defensive lapse on the very next play.  Colby Shade hit a hard grounder to Juan Baez near the third base bag.  Baez stepped on third for a force play and fired home to Diaz, who took the throw while standing on the plate.  However, the out at the plate needed to be a tag on the runner and Baez never put the tag on and Beloit had an 8-6 lead.

Wisconsin did get the winning run to the plate in the bottom of the eleventh after an infield single by Yhoswar Garcia put runners on the corners with one out against Gabe Bierman.   A strikeout and a flyout to right ended the hopes of a Rattlers comeback and a split in the series.

The Rattlers outhit the Sky Carp 13-7 but went 5-for-17 with runners in scoring position as they fell to seven games under .500 for the third time this season.

The Timber Rattlers are on the road Tuesday to start a six-game series with the South Bend Cubs at Four Winds Field in South Bend, Indiana.  Game time on Tuesday is 5:05pm CDT.  Patricio Aquino (2-1, 3.38) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Rattlers.  South Bend has announced Tyler Schlaffer (0-1, 8.02) .

DCBL enters second Sunday of action

Door County Baseball League teams are in for shorter road trips on the second Sunday of the regular season.

The slate includes Institute hosting Kolberg, Washington Island traveling to Egg Harbor, West Jacksonport visiting Maplewood, and Sister Bay welcoming Baileys Harbor. The Ports, A's, Bays, and Mets are all looking to win their second game in a row while the Islanders, Braves, Cubs, and Indians hope to skirt the loss column for the second week in a row.

All games begin at 1:30 p.m.

Spartans swept by Mustangs on U-102.1

Two four-run innings sank the Luxemburg-Casco baseball team in both ends of its doubleheader against Little Chute on Saturday, losing game one 9-5 (11 innings) and 8-3 in game two.

In game one, the Mustangs got off to a fast start thanks to a two-run home run by Noah Faccio in the first inning and an RBI single by Rowen Schmidt in the third inning to put them up 3-0. The Spartans began to rally after that, sparked by a two-run single in the fourth inning by Caleb Radart to make it 3-2. Radart would later tie the game at three when his single drove in Landon Derenne.

Thanks to the Mustangs' Dawson Roseman and Brock Gardner and the Spartans' Riley Richards and Gavin Lax, the game would stay that way until the 10th inning. Both teams would put multiple runners on base only to come away empty-handed. Faccio would not let Lax off the hook in the 10th when he deposited a pitch over the right field fence to make it 5-3 only to see the Spartans come back against Gardner with Reagan Doell driving in two on a single. The Mustangs had one more rally in them as a double from Trevor Verhagen, a homer from Reece Joten, and a single from Faccio all drove in runs in the 11th inning to give the Mustangs the win. The rally spoiled multi-hit games from Lax, Landon Derenne, Radart, and Doell.

In game two, both teams struck in the first inning. The Spartans' Ethan Werner registered an RBI single, and the Mustangs pieced together two runs on an error and a double from Noah Faccio. The Spartans tied the game in the third inning when Werner grounded into a fielder's choice that brought home Eli Derenne.

The Mustangs struck back in the fifth inning with two runs on an RBI single from Dawson Roseman. The Spartans' Jacob Coisman got one of the runs back on a towering home run to center field in the sixth inning to make it 4-3, but the Mustangs scored four runs in the bottom of the inning to push the game out of reach. Landon Derenne had two hits in the loss.

The Spartans are back in action on Tuesday when they play their first of two games next week against Oconto Falls. They end the regular season on May 27th at Green Bay Preble.

Clippers take one of three in Kiel

Sturgeon Bay played up divisions during Saturday's tournament at Kiel, losing to D1 Manitowoc Lutheran (0-5) and D2 Kaukauna (0-3), before beating D3 Shawano (4-2) in a shootout to take sixth place.

“The Kiel Tournament is a well organized event and offers competition we don’t typically see and its always very challenging. Our defense played well again in this tournament and it is an excellent tuneup for our post season. We travel to Elkhart Lake on Monday and we are playing well right now. It should be a good match up down there.”  Keeper Isabella Jimenez Seyfer stopped 3 PK shots to seal the win against Shawano.

Sky Carp Strike Back to Beat Rattlers

The Beloit Sky Carp broke a 2-2 tie with two runs in the top of the seventh inning and held on to beat the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers 4-3 on Saturday afternoon at Neuroscience Group Field.  The teams combined to go 2-for-22 with runners in scoring position in the contest.

The teams traded runs in the fourth inning.

Beloit (20-17) took the lead in the top half with an RBI single by Garrett Forrester.

In the bottom of the fourth, Eduardo Garcia singled, stole second, and went to third on a grounder off the bat of Matt Wood.  Juan Baez sent a slow grounder to short with the Beloit infield in on the grass and Garcia beat the throw home to score the tying run.

The Sky Carp went back in front in the top of the fifth.  Wisconsin starting pitcher Ryan Birchard walked Colby Shade to start the inning.  Then, Shade stole second and third.  Payton Green knocked in Shade with a sacrifice fly for a 2-1 lead.

The Rattlers had the answer in the bottom of the sixth inning Garcia reached when he beat out a potential double play ball.  Beloit starter Jake Brooks walked Matt Wood and got the second on a flyball to right before leaving the game.

Tayden Hall drew a walk against Beloit reliever Justin Storm to load the bases.  Storm followed that with a walk of Yhoswar Garcia to force in the tying run.

Wisconsin reliever Aidan Maldonado walked the first two batters he faced in the top of the seventh inning.  He would get Yiddi Cappe to hit a grounder to second to give the defense a chance to turn a double play.  They got the out at second, but Jadher Areinamo’s throw to first could not be scooped by Hall at first to allow the go-ahead run to score.  A two-out single by Conner Caskenette ended Maldonado’s day.

Tanner Shears, who was making his first appearance for the Timber Rattlers since the end of the 2023 season, took over and walked Brock Vradenburg on a 3-2 to load the bases.  Shears hit Forrester with the next pitch to force in an insurance run.

Wisconsin tried to rally in the bottom of the seventh.  Hedbert Pérez started the inning with a walk.  Areinamo followed with a single to right to send Pérez to third base.  However, Areinamo took an aggressive turn at first base that was too far, and he got caught getting back to the bag for the first out.

Blake Burke laced a double to center to score Pérez and claw Wisconsin back to within a run.  However, Storm got the final two outs of the inning to hold the lead for Beloit.  Will Kempner pitched the eighth and ninth innings for the Sky Carp to close out the game with no hits, a walk, and four strikeouts.

The Rattlers outhit the Sky Carp and drew five walks, but stranded nine runners were 1-for-10 with runners in scoring position.

Birchard had a no decision as he matched his single-game high as a pro with seven strikeouts in 4-2/3 innings.

Wisconsin had dropped the first two games of the series before sweeping a doubleheader on Friday night.

Now, Beloit leads the series 3-2 with the final game of the set scheduled for Sunday afternoon at Neuroscience Group Field.  Tanner Gillis is the starting pitcher for Wisconsin and will make his Timber Rattlers debut.  The Sky Carp have named Will Schomberg (0-4, 6.11) as their starting pitcher.  Game time is 1:10pm.

Baseball round-up: Spartans battle Mustangs on U-102.1

A Northern Door tradition highlights Saturday's slate of games featuring local teams.

On Friday:

Southern Door's game against St. Mary Catholic was canceled, as was Algoma/Two Rivers.

The Kewaunee baseball will need a different day to settle its game against Oconto, leaving the game delayed at 5-5.

A four-run fourth inning proved to be the difference as Gibraltar/Washington Island baseball returned to the win column with an 8-4 win over Mishicot on Friday.

Gibraltar/Washington Island will play Clintonville at 11 a.m., giving its student-athletes a chance to play in front of their home fans at Washington Island Ball Park.

Luxemburg-Casco will also be playing at 11 a.m. as they host Little Chute for a doubleheader. Tim Kowols will have the call on U-102.1 (originally scheduled for 104.1 WRLU) beginning at 10:45 a.m. with the pregame show followed by the first pitch at 11 a.m.

Softball round-up: Sturgeon Bay plays in tournament Saturday

Just one local team is playing on the final Saturday before the start of the WIAA Tournament next week.

On Friday:

Luxemburg-Casco's game against Waupaca was suspended due to storms. They were leading the Comets 1-0 after the second inning after Rylan Kaminski scored on a wild pitch.

Southern Door was leading Sevastopol 8-3 before their game was suspended after four innings.

Algoma's game against Valders was canceled.

Sturgeon Bay hits the road to Citizen Park to play West De Pere, Green Bay West, Hilbert, Kiel, Manitowoc Lutheran, and Two Rivers beginning at 9 a.m.

Previously scheduled games for Gibraltar/Washington Island and Southern Door were canceled.

Garcia's Homer Wins Game for Wisconsin

Eduardo Garcia hit a lead-off home run in the bottom of the seventh to give the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers a 1-0, walkoff victory over the Beloit Sky Carp in game two of Friday’s doubleheader at Neuroscience Group Field.  The win was Wisconsin’s first walkoff win of the season and gave them a sweep of the twinbill from their in-state rivals.

Beloit (19-17) was shutout 1-0 on two hits in game one by Tyson Hardin.  In game two, Yiddi Cappe started the game with a single against Wisconsin starter Anthony Flores.  He was running on an 0-2 pitch to Payton Green and was doubled off first base after Green’s liner to right was caught by Hedbert Pérez and the throw to first beat Cappe.

In the second, Jacob Jenkins-Cowart was at third base with two outs, when he strayed too far from the base on a pitch to the plate and was picked off on a throw from catcher Blayberg Diaz.

Wisconsin (16-21) had Jadher Areinamo at third with one out in the bottom of the fourth and Garcia at the plate with a 3-0 count.  However, Garcia had a poor swing at a 3-0 pitch and chased the next two pitches from Beloit starter Ike Buxton to strikeout.  Areinamo was left at third when Xavier Meachem took over to get the final out.

Flores worked through five scoreless innings, but not before walking a pair of batters in the fifth.  He got out of the inning with his third strikeout and a grounder to third.

Bayden Root would toss a pair of innings in relief for Wisconsin to keep the game scoreless to the bottom of the seventh.

Then, Garcia crushed a 1-2 hanging breaking ball to his picture on the video board at 107.6mph for his fourth homer of the season and the only run Wisconsin would need to complete their doubleheader sweep.

That was the first walkoff home run by a Timber Rattlers in almost a year.  Jesus Chirinos hit a three-run, walkoff homer in the bottom of the ninth to beat the Sky Carp on May 18, 2024.

The teams are scheduled to play one game at Neuroscience Group Field on Saturday afternoon.  Ryan Birchard (0-2, 3.70) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers.  Jake Brooks (2-2, 6.98) is set to start for the Sky Carp.  Game time is 1:10pm.

Hardin Deals a Shutout to Beloit

The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers needed a strong start from Tyson Hardin in game one of Friday’s doubleheader against the Beloit Sky Carp at Neuroscience Group Field.  They got a near-perfect gem in a 1-0 victory as Hardin tossed a complete-game, two-hit shutout.

Beloit (19-16) had battered Timber Rattlers pitchers for 29 runs on 29 hits in the first two games of the series.  Hardin was dominant as he needed 92 pitches to hold the Sky Carp scoreless over seven innings.

Wisconsin (15-21) scored the only run of the game in the bottom of the fourth by stringing together three straight two-out singles.  Juan Baez and Tayden Hall started the rally to put runners on the corners and chase Beloit starting pitcher Karson Milbrandt from the game.  Yhoswar Garcia greeted reliever Jack Sellinger with an infield single to the hole at short to drive in Baez for the 1-0 lead.

Hardin retired the first seventeen batters he faced in the game.  The streak was snapped in the bottom of the sixth when Eric Rataczak singled to left with two outs.  Hardin bounced back to end the inning with his sixth strikeout of the game.

He went back out for the top of the seventh inning and allowed a one-out, infield single by Gage Miller.  Wisconsin pitching coach Mike O’Neal made a quick visit to the mound after the single and Hardin used that as a breather before retiring the next two batters to finish the complete game.

This was the first complete-game shutout by a Wisconsin pitcher in the High-A Era of the team that started in 2021.  There have only been two other seven-inning complete games by a Wisconsin pitcher since 2021:  Victor Castaneda allowed a run on three hits against Quad Cities on June 20, 2021 and Justin Bullock allowed two runs on five hits on June 27 against Peoria.

The last seven-inning complete game shutout by a Wisconsin pitcher was tossed by Carlos Herrera, who allowed two hits, with one walk and six strikeouts against the Burlington Bees on July 27, 2017.

An early deficit did not mean much to the Luxemburg-Casco soccer team as they won their match against Seymour 3-1 Thursday night.

Rattlers/Sky Carp Postponed on Thursday Night

Thursday’s Midwest League game between the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers and Beloit Sky Carp at Neuroscience Group Field was postponed by severe weather in the Fox Cities.  The teams will play a doubleheader on Friday night with game one slated to start at 5:10pm.

The twinbill is scheduled to be two seven-inning games.  There will be a break of approximately thirty minutes between the end of game one and the start of game two.  One ticket will get you into both games on Friday night.

Fans with tickets to Thursday’s game do not have to attend the re-scheduled game and may exchange their Thursday tickets for tickets of equal or lesser value to any future regular season home game during the 2025 season.

The Timber Rattlers will have Tyson Hardin (2-1, 1.42) slated as their game one starter with Anthony Flores (0-2, 6.65) set to start for them in game two.

Packers' schedule a fever dream

No matter how you interpret the Green Bay Packers' schedule release on Wednesday, you at least have more clarity on the when and where they will play in 2025.

The Packers showcased their schedule amidst a Josh Jacobs fever dream featuring teammates, alumni, Lil Wayne, and weird references like the Will Smith/Chris Rock slap incident.

The Packers' schedule release did highlight a few details:

  • The Packers will open at home for the first time in the Matt LaFleur era.
  • The Packers will be featured on Thanksgiving for the second straight season, this time making the trip to Detroit.
  • A year after getting all the divisional rivals. Gold package season ticket holders will get an all-NFC East slate of the Washington Commanders and Philadelphia Eagles. Complicating things for those ticket holders is that both games are on weekdays.
  • The Packers will play five of their final seven games against their NFC North rivals, including the Chicago Bears twice in a three-week span.
  • The Packers' bye week is in Week 5.

Sky Carp Fly Past Rattlers

The Beloit Sky Carp jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the top of the first inning and didn’t allow the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers to get back into Wednesday’s game at Neuroscience Group Field.  The Sky Carp defeated the Rattlers 12-7 for their second straight win in the series between the in-state rivals.

Beloit (19-15) picked up right where they left off on Tuesday night when they scored seventeen runs.  Back-to-back doubles by Colby Shade and Gabe Miller to start the game gave the Sky Carp a 1-0 lead.  Payton Green made it 2-0 with an RBI single and would wind up at second on a throw to the plate that just missed getting Miller.

Wisconsin starting pitcher Patricio Aquino retired the next two batters on flyouts, with the second a sacrifice fly that scored Green.  However, he would give up a single and a walk to the next two batters and would leave the game with 35 pitches.

Jeferson Figueroa took over for Aquino and gave up a three-run home run to Michael Snyder on an 0-2 pitch and the Rattlers found themselves down 6-0.

The Timber Rattlers (14-21) put their first two batters of the bottom of the first aboard on consecutive walks by Beloit starter Noble Meyer.  Eduardo Garcia drove in a run with a single and Meyer walked another batter to load the bases with one out.  However, Wisconsin couldn’t cash in on a big hit and left the bases loaded in the inning.

Figueroa kept Beloit off the scoreboard in the second and third.  He went back out for the fourth inning and had to leave with two runners on and one out.  Jesús Broca entered the game and got the second out before issuing a walk to load the bases.  Connor Caskenette cleared the bases with a triple and scored on a poor throw to third for a 10-1 advantage.

The Rattlers loaded the bases in the bottom of the fourth with one out but only managed one run on a fielder’s choice by Luiyin Alastre.

The Sky Carp got that run back in the top of the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Emaarion Boyd.

Jadher Areinamo crushed a lead-off homer in the bottom of the fifth, his fourth home run of the season, to give the crowd a bit of a jump.  The next three Rattlers reached on a single and two walks.  Nick Brink, the third Beloit pitcher of the game, who had entered to start the fifth, would walk Juan Baez to force in a run and the Rattlers were down 11-4 but had the bases loaded with no outs.

Then, Brink got Tayden Hall to ground into a 4-6-3 double play.  A run scored, but there were two outs.  Daniel Guilarte cashed in one more run in the inning with an RBI single and the deficit was just five runs after five innings.

Brock Vradenburg gave Beloit a 12-6 lead with a two-out, RBI single in the top of the sixth after an error extended the inning to him.

Wisconsin got the final run of the game in the ninth inning.  Matt Wood, who went 2-for-3 with two walks, had doubled to start the last inning for the Rattlers.  He scored on a passed ball.

Blake Burke extended both of his streaks with the Timber Rattlers as he was 1-for-4 with a double and a walk.  Burke is on an eleven-game hitting streak and an eighteen game on-base streak.  Both streaks are the longest of the 2025 season for the Timber Rattlers.

Wisconsin struggled with runners in scoring position on Wednesday.  They were 2-for-15 in that situation.  The Sky Carp, who were 9-for-21 with runners in scoring position on Tuesday night in a 17-3 win, went 5-for-17 with runners in scoring position on Wednesday afternoon.

Game three is Thursday night at Neuroscience Group Field.  Tyson Hardin (2-1, 1.42) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers.  Beloit has named Karson Milbrandt (0-1, 3.48) as their starter.  Game time is 6:40pm.

Beloit Takes Series Opener

The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers watched an early 3-0 lead over the Beloit Sky Carp evaporate on Tuesday night at Neuroscience Group Field.  The Sky Carp scored seventeen unanswered runs and went 9-for-21 with runners in scoring position as they took advantage of thirteen walks by Wisconsin pitchers to beat the Rattlers 17-3 in game one of the six-game series.

Jadher Areinamo started Wisconsin’s first-inning rally with by drawing a walk after falling behind Beloit starter Emmett Olson 0-2.  Then, two of the hottest hitters on the Rattlers had back-to-back singles.  Blake Burke grounded a singled to right to move Areinamo to third.  Juan Baez lined the next pitch to left for a single to chase Areinamo home for a 1-0 lead.

In the bottom of the second Yhoswar Garcia stepped to the plate with a runner at first and one out.  Garcia lashed at a 1-0 pitch and lined a home run to left for a 3-0 lead.  The homer was his first of the season and his first since April 28, 2024 when he was a member of the Carolina Mudcats.

The Sky Carp (18-15) charged to the lead over the Rattlers with a run in the third, two runs in the fourth, four runs in the fifth, and five runs in the sixth.

Beloit scored their first run of the game on back-to-back doubles by Emaarion Boyd and Yiddi Cappe in the third inning.  They would tie the game in the fourth as Echedry Vargas knocked in the first run of the frame, Wisconsin starting pitcher Chandler Welch walked the next two batters, and Cappe had a sacrifice fly to score Vargas.

Welch allowed three runs on six hits with three walks and needed 85 pitches to work four innings.

The top of the fifth started with a single against reliever Dikember Sánchez.  He got the next batter to ground into a 6-4-3 double play.  The third out would be elusive.  Garrett Forrester singled.  Colby Shade tripled on a 3-2 pitch to drive in Forrester with the go-ahead run.  Sánchez walked the next batter.  Then, Michael Snyder cracked a three-run homer to left and the Sky Carp were up 7-3.

The Sky Carp poured on the offense in the sixth inning as they sent ten men to the plate.  Cappe singled and stole second to start the inning.  A walk to Gage Miller was followed by a double steal with the throw to third winding up in left to allow Cappe to score.  Ryan Ignoffo made it 9-3 with a one-out, RBI single.  Sánchez walked the next batter.  That walk ended his night.

Yerlin Rodriguez fared no better upon entering the game.  He walked Shade to load the bases, got the second out on a force play at the plate, and walked Snyder to force in a run.  Boyd knocked in two runs with a single to cap the five-run uprising.

Rodriguez got the final out of the sixth and a scoreless seventh and a scoreless eighth.

Wisconsin (14-20) turned to Luiyin Alastre to come in from left field to work the ninth.  The position player struck out Cappe for the first out, but that was between walks.  Payton Green singled home the first run of the inning.  Alastre got the second out on a flyout to right.  However, Forrester and Shade had back-to-back RBI singles to end Alastre’s stint on the mound.  Daniel Guilarte was called in from the Wisconsin dugout to get the final out, but it was once again elusive.

A walk loaded the bases.  Snyder ripped a two-run single to give him six RBI on the night.  Guilarte walked one more batter before Cappe lined out to third to end the inning.

Wisconsin’s offense, which went dormant after the second inning, did not revive in the ninth inning with only a two-out walk breaking up three strikeouts to end the game.  The Rattlers had two singles after the second inning.

Burke, Baez, and Garcia all extended their hitting streaks with their hits early in the game.  Burke has a ten-game hitting streak to match Areinamo for the longest streak on the team this season.  Garcia moved his hitting streak to seven games and Baez now sits with a six-game streak.

Game two of the series is Wednesday afternoon.  Patricio Aquino (2-0, 1.00) is the scheduled starting pitcher for Wisconsin.  Noble Meyer (0-1, 7.13) is the starter for the Sky Carp.  Game time is 12:10pm.

Packers to stay domestic in 2025, learn Chicago date

The Green Bay Packers' 2025 schedule became a little clearer after announcements were made Monday afternoon and Tuesday morning.

On Monday, the NFL announced the Packers would be a part of a doubleheader featuring two NFC divisional rivalries expected to go head-to-head with the College Football Playoff. The Packers will play at either 3:30 p.m. or 7 p.m. against the Chicago Bears at Soldier Field on December 20th, serving as the appetizer or the main course for the other game featuring the Philadelphia Eagles and the Washington Commanders.

The NFL announced the international slate on Tuesday. It had been rumored that the Packers would travel to Ireland to play the Steelers. That is no longer the case, as the Steelers will now play the Minnesota Vikings at Croke Park in Dublin, Ireland, in the country’s first-ever regular-season NFL game.

The Vikings will then travel to London to play the Cleveland Browns at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium — the only purpose-built NFL stadium outside of the U.S. — on Sunday, Oct. 5, which sees the team play two consecutive international games. This game will also be the 40th regular-season game in the capital.

The New York Jets will then take on the Denver Broncos on Sunday, Oct. 12, also at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

The third and final game in London will feature the Jacksonville Jaguars against the Los Angeles Rams at Wembley Stadium on Sunday, Oct. 19. This will be the 14th game in the capital for the Jaguars, as part of the team’s multi-year commitment to playing games in the U.K.

For the first time in Berlin, Germany, the Indianapolis Colts will host the Atlanta Falcons at the Olympic Stadium on Sunday, Nov. 9. The 2025 Berlin game is part of the NFL’s commitment to playing regular-season games across Germany. It will be the fifth regular-season game in the market, with the league having previously played games in Munich and Frankfurt.

The 2025 international slate will culminate in Madrid, Spain, on Sunday, Nov.16, with the Miami Dolphins taking on the Washington Commanders at the Bernabéu Stadium, home of Real Madrid C.F., in the league’s first-ever regular season game in Spain.

The Los Angeles Chargers will kick off the 2025 International Games Week 1 of the regular season on Sept. 5 in São Paulo, Brazil at Corinthians Arena. The opponent for this game will be announced on May 14, with the full 2025 NFL schedule release.

Clippers Host Eagles for Rematch on U102.1

The Clippers host the Eagles on Monday night in Sturgeon Bay on U102.1 and NEW Radio Sports Network.

This is the second matchup between these teams in less than two weeks. The matchup in Brussels on May 2nd saw scoring early and late. After the first inning, the Eagles held a 1-2 lead. That score would hold until the 6th, when the Clippers sent 9 batters to the plate to take a 5-2 lead. The Clippers would add another run in the 7th and claim the 7-2 victory.

The Eagles are coming off a 4-3 loss on Saturday to Luxemburg-Caso in which their comeback fell short, having both the tying and go-ahead run on in the top of the final inning. That loss extended their losing streak to 7 games.

Sturgeon Bay is coming off a Saturday double header in Chilton, in which they rallied from behind in game two to earn the split.

Wisconsin Earns a Series Split with a Sunday Win at Peoria

The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers took an early 4-0 lead thank to some misplays by the Peoria Chiefs on Sunday afternoon at Dozer Park.  The Chiefs got back into the game, but the Rattlers held on for a 5-4 win.

The Rattlers (14-19) scored three runs in the top of the second inning.  Jadher Areinamo started the inning with a single and Juan Baez singled with one out.  A grounder moved both runners into scoring position to bring Yhoswar Garcia to the plate with two outs.  Garcia’s grounder up the middle was slowed up by Peoria pitcher Chen-Wei Lin.  The ball didn’t make if off the infield grass for an RBI, single to score Areinamo.

Then, Wisconsin tried to steal a run and wound up stealing two with Daniel Guilarte at the plate.  Garcia broke for second to draw a throw.  Baez broke for the plate to try and score.  However, the throw went back to Lin on the mound.  Baez tried to scramble back to third.  It was academic as Lin threw wildly to third allowing Garcia to score.  Baez was also allowed to score as the ball wound up out of play for a 3-0 lead.

Peoria (11-21) opened the door with another error in the top of the third, and Wisconsin added another unearned run.  Eduardo Garcia reached on a booted grounder by Miguel Villarroel with one out.  Blake Burke followed with a single to extend his hitting streak to nine games to get Garcia to second base.  From there, Garcia stole third and would score on a single by Jadher Areinamo.

The Chiefs climbed back into the contest in the bottom of the fourth inning against reliever Aaron Rund.  Two walks set up the inning and Trey Paige drove in the first run with a single that also put runners at first and second with one out.

Wisconsin got more help from the Chiefs when Miguel Villarroel, the runner at second broke early for third base.  Rund stepped off the rubber, threw to third, and Villarroel was eventually caught in the rundown for the second out.

However, Tre Richardson lined a double to left-center on a 3-2 pitch to score Paige.

Peoria chipped away again with another run in the bottom of the sixth against Bayden Root.  Ryan Campos reached on an infield single, stole second, and went to third on a wild pitch.  Wisconsin had the infield back with one out and Villarroel at the plate.  Villarroel sent a grounder to Areinamo at short, and Areinamo set up to field the ball and throw home. But he missed the ball for an error to allow the run to score and Villarroel to reach as the tying run.  Villaroel would steal second and advance to third on an infield single by Paige.

Root focused after that play and retired the next eight batters he faced to protect the one-run lead through eight innings.

Wisconsin took advantage of another Peoria error, their fourth of the game, when a poor throw to first on a grounder to third allowed Daniel Guilarte to wind up at second base.  Hedbert Pérez added the insurance run with a line drive double to center and the Rattlers were up 5-3.

Zach Peek took over in the ninth and gave up a lead-off double to Paige and threw a wild pitch to let Paige take third.  Richardson sent a grounder to short and this time Areinamo made the play to first, allowing the run to score, but getting the first out.

Peek got the second out but hit Ian Petrutz to keep the game going and bring the winning run to the plate.  Won-Bin Cho hit a tricky liner to center that Eduardo Garcia caught for the final out.

Wisconsin split the six-game series at Dozer Park by winning games one, three, and six.

The Timber Rattlers are off on Monday.  They will return to action on Tuesday at home against the Beloit Sky Carp.  Chandler Welch (0-3, 5.72) is the scheduled starting pitcher for Wisconsin.  Beloit has announced Emmett Olson (0-1, 3.00) as their starter.  Game time is 6:40pm.

Luxemburg-Casco, Southern Door run at Bay Port

Two local teams open the week in Suamico for a track meet featuring other northeastern Wisconsin squads.

Southern Door and Luxemburg join Ashwaubenon, Bay Port, De Pere, Little Chute, Marinette, St. Ignatius / Chesterton Academy, and West De Pere at Bay Port High School for an invitational. The first events begin at 4 p.m.

Lemens added to Green Bay Glory roster

The newest member of the Green Bay Glory is former Luxemburg-Casco netminder Tabi Lemens.

After sitting out her freshman year at UW-Parkside due to a knee injury that sidelined her during her senior campaign for the Spartans, Lemens signed with the Glory following the spring soccer season with the Rangers. As a member of the Spartans, earned First Team All-Conference honors all four years and was named Defensive Player of the Year.  You can read the full feature on Lemens below. The Glory women open their season at home on May 14th when they battle Lawrence.

Opening day for DCBL

The 2025 Door County Baseball League kicks off on Mother’s Day.  Last fall, tie-breaking games were held to position the top four teams for postseason action.  The Kolberg Braves and the Sister Bay Bays were tied for first at the end of last year's season at 12-2. The Bays beat the Braves 3-5 to earn the Regular Season Championship title. The Mets had locked in 3rd place with a 10-4 regular season, but the Washington Island Islanders and Egg Harbor Indians needed a playoff game to nab that 4th place position and go into post-season playoffs.  It was a tight game with Washington Island stealing 4th place with a 4-3 win.

In the first round of post-season action the following week, Kolberg clinched their playoff position by beating Maplewood 6-3. Sister Bay beat out the Island 7-2. This led us to a beautiful Labor Day Weekend in Sister Bay, where the crowds filled the park. Sister Bay came out on top with a 2-0 very defensive win over Kolberg. And here we are entering the 2025 season with these two teams going head to head in Sister Bay on Sunday, May 11th.

In other opening-day action, the West Jacksonport Ports will host their big neighbor rivals, the Egg Harbor Indians. Washington Island travels to Maplewood, and the Bailey Harbor A’s host the Institute Cubs. All games begin at 1:30 p.m.

Great baseball, just $5 for adults. Kids are free. Follow the Door County Baseball League on Facebook (doorcountybaseball) for up-to-date features and notifications.

Peoria's Early Lead Too Much For Rattlers to Overcome

The Peoria Chiefs took an early lead, built on it, and held off a late charge by the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers on Saturday night at Dozer Park.  Wisconsin trailed 7-1 after six innings on Saturday and got to within 7-5 with the tying runs in scoring position in the seventh.  However, they could not make up the difference and fell for the second game in a row to the Chiefs, who added late insurance runs on a Wisconsin miscue.

Peoria (11-20) scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning – all after two outs – on one hit to take the early lead.

Wisconsin starting pitcher Anthony Flores hit the first batter of the inning and walked the second.  A sacrifice bunt and a strikeout brought Won Bin Cho to the plate with two outs and runners at second and third.  Cho, who had been activated from the Peoria Injured List earlier in the day, lined a single to center to knock in both runners for a 2-0 advantage.

Flores and the Rattlers defense couldn’t find the third out.  A throwing error by Juan Baez from third base extended the inning.  Then, Flores walked the next batter to load the bases.  He hit Graysen Tarlow with the next pitch to force in a run. Flores would balk with the next batter at the plate to let one more run score.

The Rattlers (13-19) got on the scoreboard in the top of the second.  Yhoswar Garcia delivered a two-out double to score Tayden Hall from second base.

Tarlow gave the Chiefs insurance in the third and fifth innings.  The Peoria catcher had a two-run double in the third and a two-out, RBI single in the fifth.

Wisconsin made the Chiefs sweat a bit in the top of the seventh inning as reliever Dionys Rodriguez struggled to find the strike zone.  A walk to Blayberg Diaz and a single by Garcia opened the inning.  Daniel Guilarte followed with a single to score Diaz.  Then, Rodriguez walked Hedbert Pérez to load the bases and Eduardo Garcia to force in a run.  Rodriguez would get the first out with a strikeout.

Luiyin Alastre, who replaced Jadher Areinamo in the bottom of the sixth after Areinamo had been ejected from the game after a called third strike in the sixth inning, knocked in a run with a grounder to second.  That was the end of the road for Dionys Rodriguez.

Angel Gonzalez, who had the save on Wednesday against the Rattlers, entered the game and walked Juan Baez to reload the bases.  Then, Gonzalez committed a balk to let in the fourth run of the inning and the Rattlers were within two.

Jeferson Figueroa retired the first to Peoria hitters in the bottom of the seventh inning but walked the next two hitters.  A wild pitch moved them into scoring position.  Figueroa appeared poised to get out of the inning with no damage as Trey Paige hit a deep fly to right that was held up by the wind to allow Pérez to get to the ball.  However, Pérez dropped the ball for an error and two runs scored for a 9-5 lead.

The Rattlers put two runners on in the eighth and loaded the bases in the ninth but could not score and dropped their second straight to the Chiefs.

Wisconsin stranded twelve runners while going just 2-for-11 with runners in scoring position on Saturday night.

Peoria Beats Wisconsin 3-1 at Dozer Park

The Peoria Chiefs built a 3-0 lead, and the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers could not cash in on several good opportunities to score on Wednesday afternoon at Dozer Park.  The result was a 3-1 Peoria victory with Wisconsin leaving the tying runs on base in both the eighth and ninth innings.

Back-to-back four-pitch walks with one out by Wisconsin starting pitcher Chandler Welch got him in trouble in the bottom of the first.  Michael Curialle cashed in one of the walks with a single to right and the Chiefs (9-19) were up 1-0.

Wisconsin (12-17) left the bases loaded in the top of the third and stranded the tying run at second in the top of the fourth.

Peoria added a run in the bottom of the fourth as Welch walked the lead-off batter.  Then, before he threw a 3-2 pitch to Miguel Villarroel, the pitch timer expired, an automatic ball was called, and Villarroel walked to put runners on first and second.  Grayson Tarlow followed with an RBI single to left for a 2-0 lead.

An error by shortstop Daniel Guilarte opened the door for the Chiefs in the fifth inning.  Juan Baez hit a grounder to short that should have been the second out.  However, the ball wound up in short centerfield and Baez wound up at second on the misplay.  Ian Pertrutz, the next batter, knocked in Baez with a single on an 0-1 pitch to extend the advantage for Peoria.

The Rattlers had a chance to score in the seventh.  Tayden Hall walked to start the inning against reliever Tyler Bradt.  Yhoswar Garcia doubled to center with one out.  Hall tried to score but was thrown out at the plate on a great relay throw from Villarroel to maintain the shutout.

Bradt walked Jadher Areinamo and Blake Burke with one out in the top of the eighth inning to end his day.  Angel Gonzalez took over on the mound and got the second out with a strikeout.  Juan Baez gave Wisconsin a lifeline with a double off the wall in left to score Areinamo and put the tying runs in scoring position.  However, Gonzalez got the final out of the inning on a grounder to first.

Wisconsin had a chance again in the top of the ninth as the first two batters reached against Gonzalez on a single by Blayberg Diaz and a walk to Garcia.  Gonzalez righted himself, struck out the next two batters, and got a foul pop to the catcher for the final out for his second save of the game.

The Rattlers stranded ten runners in the game and went 1-for-12 with runners in scoring position.

Diaz and Juan Baez both had two hits for Wisconsin.

Game three of the series is Thursday night at Dozer Park.  Bishop Letson (2-0, 1.27) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers.  Hancel Rincon (1-0, 2.95) is set to start for the Chiefs.  Game time is 6:35pm.

Rattlers Rally from Five-Run Deficit to Beat Peoria 14-9

The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers didn’t let deficit of 5-0 and 8-3 get them down in game one of their series against the Peoria Chiefs at Dozer Park on Tuesday night.  The Rattlers took advantage of several bouts of wildness and got some clutch hits from Eduardo Garcia and Blake Burke to rally to a 14-9 win over the hosts.

Peoria (8-19) had the lead three batters into the bottom of the first inning.  Jon Jon Gazdar doubled to start the frame.  Ian Petrutz doubled with one out to score Gazdar for the 1-0 lead.

Wisconsin (12-16) had runners at second and third with no outs in the top of the second inning after a lead-off walk to Matt Wood and a double by Eduardo Garcia.  Peoria starter Cade Winquest retired the next two batters before he walked Daniel Guilarte to load the bases.  Then, Winquest got a strikeout to end the inning and strand all three runners.

The Chiefs had two runners on base to start the bottom of the second on consecutive singles.  A grounder to short off the bat of Michael Curialle that could have been a double play ball was mishandled by Garcia for an error to load the bases with no outs.  Wisconsin starting pitcher Ryan Birchard got Trey Paige to ground softly towards second baseman Jadher Areinamo..  The ball, Areinamo, and Curialle all reached the same spot of the infield at about the same time.  The ball trickled away from Areinamo after a light collision and Paige was given credit for an infield, RBI single for a 2-0 lead.

Gazdar made it 4-0 moments later with a two-run single.  Petrutz capped the inning with an RBI single.

Birchard held the line after that single by Petrutz.  He got the final two outs of the second inning and pitched through the fifth without allowing another run.  The right-hander walked none and struck out four as he gutted through five innings.

The Rattlers offense came to life in the sixth inning.  Garcia cracked a one-out homer to get them on the scoreboard and knock reliever Tanner Jacobson out of the game.  Michael Watson took over and got the second out, but struggled to find the third out as an error and back-to-back walks loaded the bases.  Hedbert Pérez drove in two runs with a single and the Rattlers were within two runs.

The Chiefs responded in the bottom of the sixth when Michael Curialle hit a two-run home run against Jeferson Figueroa.  A single and two walks loaded the bases with two outs to chase Figueroa from the game.  Jesús Broca took over on the hill and walked Ryan Campos on four straight pitches to force in a run and the Rattlers were back down by five runs.  Broca would get the final out on a force play at second.

In the top of the seventh, Chiefs reliever Dionys Rodriguez got the first out but never found the second.  Matt Wood started the rally with a double.  Garcia and Tayden Hall walked to load the bases.  Luiyin Alastre was hit by a pitch to force in the first run of the inning.  Then, Rodriguez threw one strike to the next two batters as he walked Daniel Guilarte and Yhoswar Garcia to force in two runs to pull Wisconsin to within 8-6.

Joseph King did not throw strikes immediately as he walked Pérez on four pitches to force in another run.  Then, Jadher Areinamo – on an 0-2 pitch – tied the game on a sacrifice fly to right.  Blake Burke, who made the first out of the inning stepped in with two outs and runners on the corners and laced a 3-1 pitch from King to left-center for a two-run double and a 10-8 lead.

Eduardo Garcia added to the lead in the eighth inning with another solo homer for his second two-homer game as a Rattler.  Garcia had two homers against Beloit at home on September 9, 2022/.

Broca, who pitched around and error and a walk in the bottom of the seventh, gave up a lead-off homer to Joshua Baez in the bottom of the eighth.  He would get the first out of the inning before giving way to Aaron Rund, who retired the final two batters.

Wisconsin added three insurance runs in the top of the ninth as the Chiefs walked four more batters in the frame.  Burke added to his RBI total with a single.  Wood tacked on a sacrifice fly.  Alastre drew a bases-loaded walk to force in the final run of the night.

Rund closed out the game with a 1-2-3 ninth inning for his second save of the season.

The Chiefs used seven pitchers in the game, and they combined to walk fifteen Rattlers.

Game two of the series is Wednesday morning at Dozer Park.  Chandler Welch (0-2, 6.26) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Rattlers.  Jose Davila (1-2, 9.00) is the starter for the Chiefs.  Game time is 11:05am.

DCBL inducts ten into Hall of Fame

Baseball veterans, friends, and family gathered on Saturday, May 3rd, for the 14th Door County Baseball Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony. The first induction ceremony was held in 1992, honoring 23 Door County Baseball greats, with classic baseball nicknames like Lefty, Bugs, Curly, Smokey, and Baldy. After a five-year hiatus, a team of dedicated individuals revitalized the Hall of Fame process and chose ten individuals to be honored this round.

The 2025 Door County Baseball Hall of Fame Inductees include Jody Viste, Jeff Sperber, Jesse Miller, Bill Becker, Ryan Tanck, Willie Schartner, Robbie Schartner, Chris Colombo, Dave Jilot, and Travis Leroy.  To be considered, nominees must have been a longtime player, coach, umpire, or community person with a history of involvement in Door County Baseball.  They also needed at least ten years of baseball involvement, which could be a combination of High School, Legion, and Door County League baseball, and retired from involvement for at least five years. Many qualified and deserving individuals were nominated.

The banquet at The Lodge at Leathem Smith included highlights of each inductee’s service to and involvement in Door County Baseball. Jason Annis-Wild opened the banquet with a tribute to Jocko Rader, whose years of service kept the DCBL alive and strong. Rader passed in 2018 with 69 years of involvement in Door County Baseball.

Wisconsin Earns a Series Split with 7-3 over Whitecaps

The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers rallied from an early 3-0 deficit to defeat the West Michigan Whitecaps 7-3 on Sunday afternoon at Neuroscience Group Field.  Wisconsin totaled eleven hits, took advantage of five walks from Whitecaps pitchers, and played flawless defense in the win.

West Michigan (17-10) scored twice in the second to take the early lead.  Izaac Pacheco singled with one out.  Andrew Jenkins followed with a triple to right-centerfield to score Pacheco.  Jack Penney drove in Jenkins with a sacrifice fly for the 2-0 lead.

The Whitecaps added to their advantage in the fourth.  Wisconsin starter Anthony Flores retired the first two batters of the fourth but walked the next two hitters – Pacheco and Jenkins.  Yerlin Rodriguez was called in from the bullpen to face Penney.

Penney lined a single to center to score Pacheco.  However, Jenkins was thrown out at third on a strong throw from centerfielder Eduardo Garcia for the final out of the inning.

Wisconsin (11-16) got their offense going in the bottom of the fourth against Whitecaps starting pitcher Kenny Serwa.  Matt Wood walked, and Eduardo Garcia singled to start things.  Luiyin Alastre dropped in a single to left with one out to load the bases.  Tayden Hall snapped an 0-for-21 slump with a single that deflected off Serwa into left field to score both Wood and Garcia.  Daniel Guilarte followed with a single to score Alastre to tie the game 3-3.

The Rattlers took the lead in the bottom of the sixth against reliever Max Alba.  First, they loaded the bases with no outs on a single by Alastre, a walk to Hall, and sacrifice bunt by Guilarte on which no one covered first base in time to give him a single.  Hedbert Pérez worked the count full and took a walk to force in the go-ahead run.

Jadher Areinamo followed with a fly ball to center to drive in Hall.  Both Guilarte and Pérez were able to advance on the play to put runners on second and third.  That forced West Michigan to bring in their infield with Blake Burke coming to the plate.

Burke hit a grounder to the right side and Penney made a diving stop on the ball.  However, his only play was first base and that allowed Guilarte to score.

Matt Wood made it 7-3 with a two-out RBI single to drive Pérez.

Patricio Aquino took over for Rodriguez in the top of the seventh and pitched around a lead-off single.  He also worked around a two-out double in the eighth to pitch two scoreless innings.  Zach Peek closed out the game with a perfect ninth.

Guilarte had his first three-hit game for the Rattlers.  Alastre and Areinamo both had two singles in the game.  Areinamo has four games in a row with two hits.

Areinamo, Guilarte, Juan Baez, and Burke, the Wisconsin infielders from third to first, all contributed in the field with multiple outstanding defensive plays.

The win gave the Rattlers a split in the six-game series with the East Division-leading Whitecaps.

The Rattlers are off on Monday.  They will return to action at Dozer Park against the Peoria Chiefs on Tuesday night in Illinois.  Game time is 6:05pm.

Board Approves Remanded Conference Plans; School Reimbursement & Officials' Pay Increases

The Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association Board of Control voted to approve Conference Realignment Task Force recommendations for the previously remanded 11-player football and lacrosse plans, as well as increases in several reimbursements, fees and allowances at its April meeting.

After hearing three appeals to the football revisions the Conference Realignment Task Force made to the remanded proposals, the Board approved the recommended revised plans, which will be implemented for boys and girls lacrosse beginning in the spring of 2026 and for football in the fall of 2026.

The Board’s action impacts 49 football programs assigned to seven conferences, including one plan that involves the Northeastern Conference and Eastern Wisconsin Conference, and a second plan that affects the Classic Eight Conference, Greater Metro Conference, North Shore Conference, Parkland?Conference and the Woodland Conference. The approved plan for lacrosse impacts 20 boys’ programs and 18 girls’ programs that were assigned to three conferences, respectively. The three boys’ and girls’ leagues modified include the North Shore Conference, Greater Metro/Midwest Classic Conference and the Classic Eight Conference.

A complete listing of the conference configurations resulting from the approved football and lacrosse remanded plans are available on the Conference Realignment Requests and Proposals page of the WIAA Website.

The Board also addressed and approved three schools’ fast-track conference realignment requests to be implemented in the 2025-26 winter sports’ season. Port Washington and the West Bend East/West Co-op will both move from the Glacier Trails to the Greater Metro Conference in gymnastics, and Sheboygan Christian will move from independent status to the Eastern Wisconsin Conference in. boys swimming &?diving.

After assessing the budget review cycle process presented by the executive staff, the Board supported several school reimbursement and licensed officials pay increases related to Tournament Series events, as well as adding a $70 stipend to tournament seed meeting hosts beginning next school year.

Among the increases, all schools hosting cross country sectionals will receive $1000 to assist in the expense of timing systems in lieu of charging participating schools an entry fee. In addition, regional and sectional tournament event manager stipends will be increased $20 per event, and regional and sectional tournament host allowances will also be increased $50 per event for all sports. Furthermore, the member schools’ tournament ticket revenue sharing percentage will be increased five percent in all sports.

Other increases will adjust school State Tournament reimbursements. Mileage returns to schools will increase $.15 to $.70 for individual tournaments with an increase of $.25 to $2 for team tournaments  mileage. Additionally, $3 per meal will be added to the existing State Tournament reimbursements and lodging will increase $15 per night. State Tournament reimbursements to schools per person for individual State Tournament expenses will also increase $14.

Officials' pay during the Tournament Series will experience a $10 boost to the current fee structure for each respective sport contest. The raise in officials’ compensation comes on the heels of a $10 increase implemented in 2024-25.

The total estimated increase of payments to schools and licensed officials is approximately $893,000. With the $807,350 increase distributed to member schools, the expected revenue to be allocated to schools in 2025-26 is approximately $4 million.

Topics of discussion included staff reports on the Annual Meeting scheduled on Friday, April 25 at the Sentry Theater in Stevens Point, the 2025 Scholar-Athlete Award Ceremony on May 4 at SentryWorld in Stevens Point, a recap of the recent NFHS?Legal Meeting, a review of the winter tournaments and a summary of the WIAA Beyond the Game:  Give-Back Program to member schools, which accounts for approximately $300,000 in products.

Other discussions encompassed updates on Student-Athlete Leadership Team activities; the status of hiring a marketing &?communications assistant; an update on the development of a WIAA Foundation;?and reviewing the efforts to recruit and retain licensed officials, which prompted Board approval to editorial changes to the Guide for Sports Officials resource.

The Board received liaison reports from Dan Rossmiller of the Wisconsin Association of School Boards, Paul Manriquez of the Department of Public Instruction and Brittany Spencer Grant of the Wisconsin Athletic Directors Association.

The WIAA, as defined by its Constitution, is a private voluntary, unincorporated, and nonprofit organization. The membership oversees interscholastic athletic programs for 513 senior high schools and 36 junior high/middle level schools in its membership.

Slaby, Leist sign their NLI

Multi-sport Algoma athletes Sierra Slaby and Carson Leist made their athletic and academic futures official on Wednesday as they signed their National Letters of Intent in front of teammates, family members, and community supporters.

Slaby signed her NLI to play basketball at Aurora University in Illinois after an accomplished cross country, soccer, basketball, and softball career for the Wolves. She thanked her teammates during her remarks during the ceremony, while her basketball coach, Mark Zastrow, saluted her contributions to the team. She expressed her excitement about continuing her basketball career after signing.

Leist signed his NLI to play baseball at Concordia University Wisconsin after his success playing football, basketball, and baseball for the Wolves. He said it was an easy decision for him to pick baseball for his post-high school career.

While they have they have their post-high school careers figured, both Slaby and Leist have plenty of ball to play left for their respective teams at Algoma.

Whitecaps Outduel Rattlers in 1-0 Decision

The West Michigan Whitecaps scratched out the only run of Saturday’s game at Neuroscience Group Field with an eighth inning sacrifice fly to defeat the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers 1-0.  Wisconsin was held to four hits in the game.

The starting pitchers were outstanding.

Whitecaps starter Joe Miller allowed three hits, walked one, and struck out nine over five scoreless innings.  Tyson Hardin, the Wisconsin starter, pitched seven scoreless innings, walked none, and struck out nine while allowing four hits.

Wisconsin (10-16) had their chance against Miller in the first inning.  Jadher Areinamo singled with one out in the first inning.  Blake Burke followed with a double to put runners at second and third.  Miller escaped the inning with back-to-back strikeouts.  The Rattlers would not get another runner past first base for the remainder of the game.

West Michigan (17-9) had their best chance against Hardin in the sixth inning. Archer Brookman reached on an error and Jack Penney singled with one out.  Hardin got out of the jam by getting Josue Briceño to pop out and Johnny Peck to strikeout to keep the game scoreless.

Hardin went back out for the seventh inning and set down the Whitecaps in order.  The right-hander out of Mississippi State set a new professional single-game highs for strikeouts and innings pitched with his performance on Saturday.  On the season, Hardin has allowed two runs, walked four and struck out 29 over 25-2/3 innings.

Bayden Root, the Wisconsin reliever who entered in the top of the eighth, ran into tough luck.  Brookman blooped a single to left to start the inning.  Seth Stephenson followed with a blooper to center to put two runners on bases.  Then, Root got Penney to send a weak grounder back to the mound.  Root got the force play at second, but the relay to first was late to give the Whitecaps runners at the corners.

Briceño was next to the plate for the Whitecap.  He had a full count against Root when he sent a flyball to right that was deep enough to score Brookman with the run for a 1-0 lead.

The Rattler hitters struggled against the West Michigan bullpen.  Trevin Michael allowed a one-out hit to Areinamo in the sixth but worked two scoreless innings.  Preston Howey closed out the game with a perfect eighth and a perfect ninth for his first save of the season.

Areinamo was 2-for-3 with a walk for his third consecutive multi-hit game.

Wisconsin is 2-7 in one-run games on the season.  West Michigan is 6-2 in one-run games so far this year.

The series finale is Sunday afternoon.  Anthony Flores (0-1, 5.40) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Rattlers.  Kenny Serwa (1-1, 2.20) is set to start for the Whitecaps.  Game time is 1:10pm.

Membership Conducts 129th Annual Meeting; Passes Four Amendments

The member schools of the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association passed four amendments to the Constitution, Bylaws and Rules of Eligibility and conducted other membership business at the 129th Annual Meeting at the Sentry Insurance Theater today.

Two of the approved amendments impact the membership’s Rules of Eligibility. After voting down a similar proposal last year, the members voted 293-108 to approve the proposed Name, Image, Likeness (NIL)?language, making Wisconsin one of more than 40 states that permit student-athletes to enter into NIL opportunities. The approved language permits NIL?activities that are not associated or identified with their respective school team, school, conference or the WIAA and are in accordance with other prohibited NIL?activities, including language attempting to deter undue influence to transfer schools.

“With today’s vote, member schools have opted to join a growing list of states that allow student athletes to capitalize on their athletic talents in a way that is similar to students with other valued talents and skills,” Executive Director Stephanie Hauser said. “At its core, the WIAA is charged with promoting fairness and sportsmanship while protecting the integrity of the game–something I believe this NIL language preserves.”

The other amendment affecting the Rules of Eligibility, which was advanced as a recommendation of the Calendar and Contact Ad-Hoc Committee, expands the opportunities for summer coaching contact in all WIAA-sponsored sports. Coaches and members of a school’s team may now voluntarily assemble without restriction from June 1-June 30 and from July 7-July 31, except football, which requires coaching contact to conclude one week prior to the start of fall practice. No school, sport-specific coach contact will be permitted from July 1-July 6. The membership approved the amendment by a 294-106 vote.

One of the approved amendments results in a change to the Constitution. The membership voted 393-17 to allow ninth-grade teams to play the same number of contests as allowed in the Season Regulations for junior varsity and varsity teams.

The membership elected to maintain the current process for applying the performance factor for all sports with a team qualifying component. The Constitutional amendment advanced directly to the Annual Meeting by petition that would have excluded cross country from applying the competitive balance performance factor procedure was voted down by a 161-241 vote.

The one amendment impacting the Bylaws received membership approval by a 335-67 tally. In addition to the current one-game suspension, a spectator ejected from a contest is now required to complete the free online NFHS?Sportsmanship Course available on the NFHSLearn.com website. The completed course certificate must be submitted to school officials before attending any future home athletic events.

The membership also voted 390-5 in support of two editorial changes clarifying Board of Control election language outlined in the Constitution and the performance factor procedures stated in Appendix N of the Senior High Handbook. The edits do not change any existing rules or interpretations of the rules. The changes only serve as clarifications to the existing rule or interpretation.

In the Director’s Report, Hauser presented a sports-themed message in recognition of the NFL?Draft held in Green Bay this week. Her comments conveyed her vision on moving education-based athletics forward and adapting to changes in the interscholastic athletics landscape, as well as expressing her appreciation for the efforts of committee members and school leaders that contribute to the membership’s governance.

Hauser highlighted maintaining and building the WIAA legacy, which included the announcement of the WIAA Foundation, which will be formally introduced at the Area Meetings in fall. She also introduced the launching of the first-ever WIAA Strategic Planning Process beginning with a member survey to collect the schools’ voices for future planning.

In addition, she shared that the WIAA is in good financial standing. With 85 percent of revenue generated by Tournament Series attendance, last year’s 1.3 million spectators allowed the Board of Control to recently approve tournament-related school reimbursements that will be approximately $4 million in 2025-26.   Her comments also alluded to the first year success of the Student-Athlete Leadership Team and securing facility agreements for the State Tournaments. She also acknowledged the need to confront persistent challenges to the membership’s rules and governance.

Hauser commended the dedication of more than 10,000 licensed officials and recognized the conducting of the first-ever survey to inquire how to effectively support and recruit officials. It was the early and late innings that held all the scoring Friday night as the Sturgeon Bay Clippers come from behind to beat the Southern Door Eagles 6-2 in Brussels.

The Kewaunee Storm baseball team scored three runs in the first inning and let Brett Paulsen do the rest in a 4-0 win over Algoma on Friday.

They only had one less hit than their visitors, but five errors doomed the Sevastopol Pioneers baseball team in their 8-0 loss to Oconto Friday night.

Highlighting Saturday's action is Kewaunee's non-conference game against Two Rivers at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium. The game will take place following the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers' game against the West Michigan Whitecaps, which play at 1:05 p.m. on Saturday.

Max Meylor led the way, throwing for 155 yards and four touchdowns on 16 completions. He also rushed for 47 yards and two scores on the ground. Lowell Patron paced the Blizzard's wide receiving corps with six catches for 81 yards and two scores. Letson Ks Nine as Wisconsin Beats West Michigan

The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers gave Bishop Letson plenty of support on Friday night at Neuroscience Group Field.  The Rattlers scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning and Letson – after a slight hiccup in the second inning – took care of the West Michigan Whitecaps with nine strikeouts over five innings to propel the Rattlers to a 6-1 victory.

The Timber Rattlers (10-15) jumped to the early lead with four runs in the first inning.  Eduardo Garcia knocked in the first run with a single.  Later in the first, Juan Baez had the bases loaded and singled to right to drive in two runs.  Baez also drew a wild throw on an attempt to get him at first base and this allowed a third run to score on the play for a 4-0 lead.

West Michigan (16-9) put a two-out threat together in the second inning against Letson, who had retired the first five batters he faced in the game with relative ease.  Then, Whitecaps had back-to-back scratch singles and a walk on a 3-2 pitch to load the bases.  Letson ended the rally with a strikeout, his fifth of the game.

Letson needed 34 pitches to get through the second.  He only needed 32 pitches over his final three frames.  Max Clark singled to start the top of the third.  Then, Letson retired the final nine batters he faced.  He struck out Clark on a 3-2 pitch for his ninth K of the game to set a new single-game high as a professional.  Letson walked one and allowed three hit in the game

Jadher Areinamo added to the Wisconsin lead in the bottom of the fifth with a lead-off homer, his third home run of the season.  Areinamo had two hits on Friday night for his eighth multi-hit game of the season.

Aaron Rund, the first Wisconsin reliever, picked up where Letson ended by retired all six batters he faced.

Blake Burke provided one more power surge for the Rattlers with a long home run to center to start the Wisconsin seventh.  The homer was also his third of the season.

The Whitecaps got on the scoreboard in the eighth inning against Dikember Sanchez, who gave up a single, a wild pitch, and a walk to put runners on the corners with one out.  Seth Stephenson drove in a run with a sacrifice fly.  Sanchez got a strikeout, Wisconsin’s twelfth of the game, to get out of the eighth with no more damage.  He would get one more strikeout as he pitched a scoreless ninth inning to close out the win for the Rattlers.

In his last two starts, Letson has pitched 10-1/3 scoreless innings, allowed six hits, walked one, and struck out thirteen while earning the win in both starts.  In his previous start, Letson earned the win at Cedar Rapids in a 1-0 decision.

Game five of the series is Saturday afternoon at Neuroscience Group Field.  Tyson Hardin (2-0, 0.96) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers.  Joe Miller (1-0, 2.18) is scheduled to start for the Whitecaps.  Game time is 1:10pm.

Whitecaps Wash Away Wisconsin Leads to Hand Rattlers 6-3 loss

The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers had leads of 1-0 and 3-2 against the West Michigan Whitecaps on Thursday Night at Neuroscience Group Field.  However, the East Division-leading Whitecaps rallied past Wisconsin by taking advantage of some walks with some clutch two-out hits on the way to a 6-3 victory.

Hedbert Pérez gave the Rattlers (9-15) an early lead when he hit a lead-off home run in the bottom of the first.  The homer was the fourth of the season for Pérez.

The Whitecaps (16-8) had a runner at second with two outs in the top of the second.  Abel Bastidas tied the game with a bloop single just fair inside the line in right for an RBI single.  Max Clark followed with a single, his second of the night.  Then, Johnny Peck singled to right to knock in Bastidas for a 2-1 lead.

Wisconsin loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the fourth inning against Whitecaps starting pitcher Carlos Marcano.  Blake Burke walked, Eduardo Garcia singled, and Juan Baez walked to set the stage.  Luiyin Alastre, who had just joined the team on Tuesday, delivered the lead to the Rattlers with a one-out single to left that scored Burke and Garcia.

Chandler Welch, the Wisconsin starter, retired the first two Whitecaps he faced in the top of the fifth.  He walked Andrew Jenkins on a 3-2 offering, the ninth pitch of the plate appearance, to extend the inning.  Welch followed that with a walk of Jack Penny on a full count to end his night with 88 pitches.

Archer Brookman greeted reliever Zach Peek with a line drive single to left to score Jenkins with the tying run.  Peek would throw a wild pitch to move Penny and Brookman into scoring position before Luke Gold singled to score both runners and the Whitecaps a 5-3 lead.

West Michigan added to their lead in the sixth inning as Max Clark bunted for a lead-off single, his fourth hit of the night.  Peek walked the next two batters to load the bases.  He would uncork a wild pitch with one out to score Clark with the final run of the game.

The Rattlers managed three two-out singles for the rest of the game – one by Garcia in the fifth and two from Jadher Areinamo with one in the seventh and one in the ninth.

In the ninth, the Areinamo single had been paired with a lead-off walk to Blayberg Diaz to bring the tying run to the plate, but there was no comeback for the Rattlers as Marco Jimenez got the final out of the game to complete his two scoreless innings and earn his first save of the season.

Areinamo’s two hits gave him his seventh multi-hit game of the season.  Eduardo Garcia also had two hits to give him his fifth multi-hit game of 2025.

Thursday night was the twentieth time in 24 games this season the Rattlers have scored four or fewer runs.  Rattlers pitchers walked eight in the game.

Game four of the series is Friday night at Neuroscience Group Field.  Bishop Letson (1-0, 1.65) is the scheduled starting pitcher for Wisconsin.  The Whitecaps have named Rayner Castillo (0-0, 3.71) as their starter.  Game time is 6:40pm.

Clippers soccer get back to work against Peshtigo

The Sturgeon Bay soccer team returns to work at home when they welcome Peshtigo to a Packerland Conference match.

The Clippers saw its streak of positive results come to an end on Monday, losing to Pulaski 5-0 on the road. Estella Vieaux registered a brace while Anya Hasser, Elizabeth Dornfeld, and Alina Harnowski also scored goals for the Raiders. In goal, Isabella Jimenez Seyfer had 15 saves. “It was an extremely windy and long game for our players," Clippers soccer coach Robert Desotelle said post-match. "Pulaski was quick and physical and we struggled to win and possess the ball.  Playing quality competition isn’t always easy, but we learn a great deal about the speed of play and physicality in these types of matches. Better days are ahead.”

The Bulldogs enter the match 3-2-0, including a 2-1 win over Kingsford (MI) on Tuesday.

Thursday's match against the Bulldogs begins at 6 p.m. at Clark Field.

Luxemburg-Casco hosts track invite Thursday

Both teams were more than 130 points behind first-place Fox Valley Lutheran (boys) and Freedom (girls).  For the boys, the 4x100m relay featuring Grant Seering, Kory Jansen, Julian Bailey, and Lawdon Tanck was the closest to winning with a second place finish. Levi Kinnard took third in the 400m with a personal record. The girls saw

Macie DeJardin (3200m) and Aubree Wypiszenski (100m hurdles), thanks to personal records, posted the team's best finish, third place.
