United, Clippers renew rivalry in sectional semifinal on U-102.1

Gibraltar/Sevastopol and Sturgeon Bay will meet for the third time this season on Thursday, but much more will be at stake this time around.

The Clippers cruised through New Holstein and St. Mary Catholic to earn a third home game and a sectional semifinal berth, outscoring their opponents 15-1 in the process. The lone goal given up was an own goal in the second half of their match against the Zephyrs. Kayden Klotz (4), Zone Weinke (2), Finn Stevenson (3), Jaylen Reynolds (2) all have multiple goals this postseason. The win allowed the Clippers to capture their 16th consecutive regional championship.

The road to the sectional semifinal for the United has been bumpier. Last Saturday, the team earned its regional title in a shootout win over Amherst after beating Algoma 4-1 in its tournament opener. Juniors Damien Lardinois and Mauricio Fernandez and seniors Trey Perlman and Gabe Peterson drilled their shootout attempts to clinch the program's first regional title since 2010.

The lone blemishes on the United's conference record came at the hands of the Clippers. Sturgeon Bay won the first meeting at Clark Field 7-1 before the United nearly pulled off the upset in the second meeting, losing to the Clippers 3-2.

Bryan Mazur and Peter Kerwin will have the call from Clark Field beginning at 6:45 p.m. on U-102.1 and NEWRadioSportsNetwork.com with the pregame show followed by the opening touch at 7 p.m.

Spartans volleyball seeks revenge vs. Irish in sectional semifinal

The only team standing between the Luxemburg-Casco volleyball team and a trip to the sectional final is the same team that kept from an outright NEC title this season.

The Spartans welcome Freedom to Luxemburg on Thursday amid a stretch that has seen them go 7-2 over their last nine matches. They have not dropped a non-tournament match since they lost to the Irish on October 1st, 3-2. The Spartans are 27-12 on the year, including tournament wins against Oshkosh North and Notre Dame via sweeps.

The Irish avenged their lone conference loss to Fox Valley Lutheran in the regional final last Saturday, winning that match 3-1. They have won 11 of their last 13 matches, including their last seven.

The first serve is slated for 7 p.m.

Door County United hosts conference meet in Sturgeon Bay

The Door County United swim team welcomes its conference foes for a meet on Thursday at the Door County YMCA in Sturgeon Bay.

The second-place finishers were Julia Michalski (SBHS), Caitlyn Hasenjager (SEV), Chloe Bissen (SBHS), and Kailyn Neville (SDHS). Final weeks remaining for Run The Door

Just three races remain to decide who will sit on top of the Run the Door standings in 2024.

Last weekend, Run the Door runners tackled the Fall 50 either as solo or relay participants. Shoreood's Jordan Janusiak won the solo race with a time of 6:04:34 while Elizabeth Cinquegrani of Wauwatosa was the top female, finishing an hour later at 7:04:30. You can find the full results here.

Next up is the inaugural Pen Park Trail Fest 14K and 30K at Peninsula State Park in Fish Creek. You can still register for the event here. The series wraps up with the One Barrel 2.62 (Miles) Run in Egg Harbor on November 23rd and the Northern Door YMCA Ugly Sweater 5K Fun Run/Walk in Fish Creek on December 7th.

Wisconsin Badger basketball tips off Wednesday

The 2024-25 version of the Wisconsin Badger men’s basketball team will take the court for the first time Wednesday night as they host Wisconsin-River Falls in an exhibition game at the Kohl Center.

The Badgers are coming off a 22-14 record last year with an 11-9 record in the Big Ten under Coach Greg Gard, who is starting his ninth season in Madison.  In the NCAA tournament, the Badgers were a fifth seed and were upset by 12th-seeded James Madison in the first round.

Tip is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Kohl Center with the annual Cancer Awareness game.

Packers sign former first-round linebacker to practice squad, cut Russell

The Green Bay Packers announced Tuesday that they had signed linebacker Jamin Davis to the practice squad.  Davis, a former 2021 first-round pick by Washington , started 36 of 45 games in three seasons with the Commanders.   The 6'-3" 234-pound inside linebacker played in 13 games last season for Washington before going on the injured reserve after a shoulder injury.

To make room on the roster for Davis, the Packers cut linebacker Chris Russell who was signed back in August, was cut, and re-signed to the practice squad at the end of August.

Malik and McManus magic strike again in Packers win

Two of the biggest acquisitions of the season were not on the roster to begin training camp but loomed large in the Green Bay Packers' 30-27 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars on the road on Sunday.

The Packers and Jaguars traded scores in the second quarter with Josh Jacobs scoring the lone touchdown for the Green and Gold. The Jaguars entered the break with a slim deficit but took the lead early in the third quarter when Trevor Lawrence threw a touchdown pass to make it 17-13. After Jordan Love exited the game with an injured groin, Malik Willis entered the game and engineered two touchdown drives to help the Packers retake the lead. The Jaguars answered accordingly and tied the game late before Brandon McManus registered his second walk-off, game-winning field goal to lead the Packers to the win.

Jacobs ended his day with 127 yards on 25 carries, including a 38-yard score to put the Packers up 20-17 after the Jaguars took the lead.

The Packers will host Detroit next Sunday.

Gamblers edged by Capitols

The Green Bay Gamblers could not hold off the Madison Capitols in a 2-1 loss on Saturday.

The Capitols struck first during a chippy opening period that saw a game misconduct and a fight get penalized. The Gamblers tied things up in the second period when Aidan Park found the back of the net for this fifth goal of the season. With less than six minutes to go in the third period, Colton Jamieson broke the tie for the Capitols to give Madison the win.

The Gamblers ended the opening month with a 4-5-1 mark, which is good for sixth place in the USHL Eastern Conference.

Packers look to keep streak alive versus Jags

The Green Bay Packers' newest acquisition gave the Green Bay Packers their third straight win last Sunday, this time a 24-22 victory over the Houston Texans. With the Texans leading 19-14 in the third quarter, Love found Josh Jacobs for his first career receiving touchdowns to give the Packers a 21-19 lead. The two teams would trade field goals the rest of the way, with the Packers' Brandon McManus having the last say with a 45-yard kick to win the game as time expired.

The Jaguars have won two of their last three games after starting 0-3 to start the campaign. In last week's win against the New England Patriots in London, Trevor Lawrence threw for 193 yards and a touchdown while Tank Bigsby did the heavy lifting with 118 yards rushing and two touchdowns.

Kickoff is set for noon.

Packers welcome back DL Ford, say goodbye to long snapper

The Green Bay Packers front office spent their Victory Monday making roster moves.

According to Packers.com, the team has activated DL Jonathan Ford off injured reserve/designated for return and released LS Matt Orzech. Ford has been on the injured reserve list all season long after he hurt his ankle in the preseason finale. Orzech has been a consistent roster cut in times when they need to make room on the roster. He is expected to resign with the Packers as a part of the team's practice squad.

Packers kick Texans out of town

The Green Bay Packers' newest acquisition gave the Green Bay Packers their third straight win on Sunday, this time a 24-22 victory over the Houston Texans.

The Packers and Texans traded scores throughout the first half, with the visitors feasting on three Green Bay turnovers, two of which were interceptions of Jordan Love. The Packers quarterback had his own first-half highlights as he found Tucker Kraft on a post route and Dontayvion Wicks for a 30-yard score.

The Packers will travel to Jacksonville for a Sunday noon start to face the Jaguars.

Gamblers split in Sioux City

It was a weekend of mixed results for the Green Bay Gamblers as they split their weekend series against the Sioux City Musketeers last weekend.

In Friday's 5-2 win, Mykhailo Danylov and Aidan Park put the Gamblers in front by two goals before the two teams traded tallies the rest of the way. Lev Katzin scored twice, and Will Zellers scored his own goal in front of Gavin Moffatt, who stopped 22 of the 24 shots he faced.

The offense dried up for both teams in the Gamblers' 2-0 loss on Saturday. Neither team scored until just over three minutes left and Landen Gunderson snuck in a shot past Moffatt. An empty netter secured the win for the Musketeers.

Packers look for second straight Lambeau win vs. Texans

The Green Bay Packers will face one of their toughest tests of the season at home Sunday when they welcome the Houston Texans to Lambeau Field.

The rain did not slow down the Packers' route to a fourth win on the season on Sunday, easily beating the Arizona Cardinals 34-13 at Lambeau Field. The Packers rushed for 179 yards, with four players gaining at least 20 yards on the ground, including 62 from Josh Jacobs. Jordan Love threw for 258 yards on 22 completions, four of which resulted in touchdowns.

The Texans stampeded past the New England Patriots 41-21 on Sunday to improve to 5-1 on the season. C.J. Stroud threw for 192 yards and three scores while Joe Mixon broke the century mark on the ground and a touchdown.

Kickoff is set for noon Sunday.

Luxemburg-Casco, Southern Door look to build playoff resumes on NRSN Friday

On the eve of Selection Saturday, the area's 11-man football teams will have one more chance to bolster their seeding on Friday.

On U-102.1, Southern Door looks to extend their season-long winning streak to six when they host Mishicot.

Over on 104.1 WRLU, Luxemburg-Casco looks to bounce back from its disappointment last week with a home date against Freedom.

Other 11-man action includes Sturgeon Bay traveling west to Bonduel and Kewaunee heading north to Marinette. All games kickoff at 7 p.m. with the pregame show on the radio broadcasts beginning at 6:45 p.m. The games will also be streamed at NEWRadioSportsNetwork.com

In Eight-man football, Gibraltar will play its final game of the season at Wabeno/Laona on 105.1 The GOAT. The game kicks off at 7 p.m. after the pregame show, which starts at 6:45 p.m. Thursday's Eight-man action included Algoma winning the Across the Bay Conference title over Lena/St. Thomas 22-20 and Sevastopol toppling Gillett 44-14.

Soccer Round-Up: Sturgeon Bay captures Packerland, travels to Seymour with The Pirate

Before the regular season concludes this week, local soccer teams had some business to take care of on Thursday.

Sturgeon Bay officially earned the Packerland Conference crown with a 5-1 win over Algoma Thursday afternoon. The Clippers will have one final tune-up ahead of the WIAA Tournament on Friday when they travel to Seymour to face the Thunder. Bryan Mazur and Peter Kerwin will have the call on The Pirate beginning at 6:15 p.m. with the pregame show followed by the first touch at 6:30 p.m. You can stream the game at Pirateradiosturgeonbay.com or tune your radios to 103.3 FM or 96.7 WBDK HD-2. The Wolves will hit the road as well as they travel to Luxemburg to face the Spartans.

The Gibraltar/Sevastopol United boys soccer regular season concluded on a high note on Thursday, October 17, with victories for both the JV and varsity squads at home versus Green Bay East. JV won their match 3-1, and varsity defeated the Red Devils 1-0.

Kewaunee was on the losing end of a season-long skid getting snapped at Green Bay West topped the Storm 6-0.

In other Friday action, Luxemburg-Casco visits Algoma at 4 p.m.

Volleyball round-up: Luxemburg-Casco captures share of NEC crown

Thursday marked the final night many of the area's teams will take the court ahead of the start of the WIAA Tournament next week.

The Luxemburg-Casco Spartans volleyball found themselves on top of the North Eastern Conference again on Thursday, shutting out Denmark 3-0 on the road.

The Algoma Wolves volleyball team could never get into an offensive rhythm against the Peshtigo Bulldogs, losing their match in straight sets Thursday night.

Other scores from Thursday night include Sturgeon Bay knocking off Sevastopol 3-1, Kewaunee getting edged by NEW Lutheran 3-2, and Gibraltar being swept by Oconto 3-0.

Luxemburg-Casco cross country heads to Green Bay for NEC Championships

The Luxemburg-Casco cross country team will head to UW-Green Bay's Shorewood Cross Country Course on Friday for the North Eastern Conference championships.

They will join Clintonville, Denmark, Fox Valley Lutheran, Freedom, Little Chute, Marinette, Oconto Falls, Waupaca, and Wrightstown for the meet, which begins with the Girls Varsity at 3:30 p.m., followed by the Boys Varsity (4:00 p.m.), Girls JV (4:30 p.m.), and Boys JV (5:00 p.m.).

This will be the second time this season the Spartans have races on the course with the boys taking eighth and the girls finishing in 13th place in the 25+ team De Pere Invitational in early September. Marcis Doell (53rd, 18:37) and Claire DuChateau  (3rd, 20:22.2) paced the Spartans that day. The Spartans' strongest runner on the boys' side, Kyan Lynts, did not record a time.

Gamblers prepare for weekend set in Sioux City

The Green Bay Gamblers look to claw back into the win column this weekend when they travel to Sioux City to take on the Musketeers.

The Gamblers saw their two-game winning streak snapped last Saturday when they fell to the Madison Capitols 5-2. The two teams traded goals in the first two periods, with the Gamblers' Andrew O'Sullivan and Aidan Park answering Capitols' goals. The Gamblers had no answer in the third when the Capitols' Diego Johnson scored the eventual game-winner. The Capitols put the game on ice with two empty-netters in the final minute.

The puck drops at 7:05 p.m. on Friday and 6:05 p.m. on Saturday.

Local eight-man football begins swan song Thursday

The season for the area's eight-man football team could potentially be over by Saturday morning.

Sevastopol is the only team with an outside chance at making the playoffs if they beat Gillett on Thursday night. That would give them five wins, joining close to 30 other teams with at least that many. However, there are only 16 slots available in the WIAA Eight-Man Football Playoffs. The Pioneers play the Tigers in Institute at 7 p.m.

Enrollment is the only thing keeping Algoma out of the playoff field. They are a 6-1 on the season, with a non-conference loss to NEW Lutheran/Oneida Nation, their season's lone blemish. They would blow out the United in a subsequent meeting. The Wolves will face their toughest task of the season on Thursday at 7 p.m. when they welcome undefeated Lena/St. Thomas Aquinas for a chance at the Across the Bay Conference crown.

Gibraltar is 0-6 on the season and will not make the playoffs. They are scheduled to play Wabeno/Laona on Friday at 7 p.m. The game will air on 105.1 The GOAT beginning at 6:45 p.m. with the pregame show followed by the kickoff from Wabeno High School at 7 p.m.

Sophomore Shaeffer Rass (SEV) had a phenomenal meet, including a second-place finish in the 200-yard individual medley with a time that was five seconds faster than her best time overall. Senior swimmer Anika Steinbach (SBHS) was a consistent scorer in last night's meet, with her fourth-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle and the 100-yard butterfly.
She also made the best time in both events, dropping two seconds in the 200-yard freestyle. Junior varsity swimmers put up a good fight and showed great determination. Freshman Maria Wienke (SBHS) dropped 15 seconds in her 200-yard freestyle, and sophomore Kylie Sikorsky (SEV) dropped nine seconds in her 100-yard backstroke. The team will travel to Seymour High School on Thursday, October 16th, for their next conference dual.

Kewaunee girls, Peshtigo boys win Packerland Conference cross country crowns

Anchored by Hannah Miller's title-winning time of 19:36, the Kewaunee girls won the team title. It was the second straight year Miller won the Packerland Conference meet, edging out Peshtigo's Rachel Nelson and teammate Natalie Miller.

On the boys side, Dominik Baxter's 17:44 helped Peshtigo win the conference title. Lucas Conard of Southern Door was the top local finisher for the boys, covering the hilly 5K distance in 18:01.

Packers cutting Narveson, sign kicker McManus

The Green Bay Packers are making a change in their kicking game this week.  According to Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network, the Packers are releasing rookie kicker Brayden Narveson and signing veteran Brandon McManus.

McManus worked out with the Packers on Tuesday and is a 33-year-old kicker with 10 years of NFL experience.

Narveson missed five field goals this season in six games, missing a 44-yard attempt on Sunday against the Arizona Cardinals.

McManus kicked for the Denver Broncos and most recently played for Jacksonville last year hitting on 30 of 37 field goals and a perfect 35 for 35 in extra points.

The NFL investigated sexual assault allegations against McManus this year but determined there was insufficient evidence to take any action.

McManus is expected to be added to the roster Wednesday and kick this weekend against the Houston Texans on Sunday.

DCU battles New London in home finale

For the final time this season, the Door County United swim team will host New London High School on Tuesday at the Door County YMCA.

The United are coming off one of their closest dual meets of the year, beating Wittenberg-Birnamwood on October 10th 86-84. The A 200-yard medley relay consisting of Julia Michalski (SBHS), Caitlyn Hasenjager (SEV), Isabella Jimenez-Seyfer (SBHS), and Kailyn Neville (SDHS) began the night with a nail-biter race. They placed first, only 0.15s faster than Wittenberg’s A relay. Kailyn Neville (SDHS) was also among the top scorers of the evening for her events. Freshman Amelia Michalski (SBHS) and Megan Quaderer (SBHS) were also among some of the top scorers for the evening as well. The meet all came down to the 400-yard freestyle relay. DCU needed to place two relays in the top three finishes to win the meet. The A and B relay went to finish 2nd and 3rd, which gave us enough points to win the meet. The A relay team was Chloe Bissen (SBHS), Megan Quaderer (SBHS), Amelia Michalski (SBHS), and Julia Michalski (SBHS). The B relay team was Quinn Sperber (SDHS), Shaeffer Rass (SEV), Ophelia Linnan (SEV), and Isabella Jimenez-Seyfer (SBHS).

Packers power past rain, Cardinals in home win

The rain did not slow down the Green Bay Packers' route to a fourth win on the season on Sunday, easily beating the Arizona Cardinals 34-13 at Lambeau Field.

Jayden Reed opened the scoring halfway through the first quarter when he took a quick pass from Jordan Love to make it 7-0. A week after being suspended by the organization for conduct detrimental to the team, Romeo Doubs made his presence felt when he toe tapped his way into the end zone on another Love pass to make it 14-0. A Brayden Narveson and a long touchdown pass from Love to Christian Watson made it 24-0 before the Cardinals scored once before the half to make it 24-7.

A second touchdown to Doubs and another field goal from Narveson capped the scoring for the Packers in the second half in response to field goals from the Cardinals.

The Packers rushed for 179 yards with four players gaining at least 20 yards on the ground, including 62 from Josh Jacobs. Love threw for 258 yards on 22 completions, four of which ended in the endzone.

The Packers are back at home on Sunday against the Houston Texans.

Scott HIlsabeck of Sturgeon Bay bowled a perfect game and came one pin away from tying Jeff Hansen's Door County record of 838 in 2017 for a series on Tuesday night at Apple Valley Lanes.  Hilsabeck shot games of 258, 300, and 279 in the men's league at Apple Valley Lanes while subbing for the night, tallying an 837.  He says he only left the four-pin in the sixth frame, which prevented him from capturing the county record for a series.  Overall, Hilsabeck hit 33 strikes out of 36 possible on lanes seven and eight.

The Rams would score again late in the fourth and threaten again before the final whistle. Still, the Packers survived for the third win of the season to keep pace with the Chicago Bears, who also won Sunday and find themselves both staring up at the undefeated Minnesota Vikings in the NFC North standings.
