Rockers walked off by Leprechauns

The Green Bay Rockers started fast but ended in an offensive slide as they lost to the Royal Oak Leprechauns 4-3 on the road Saturday night.

Mulivai Levu cleared the bases with a double to make it 3-0 on three hits. They would only muster five more hits as they went scoreless the rest of the way while the Leprechauns slowly chipped away at the lead. An RBI single by Oliver Service sent the Rockers back to their hotel with the loss as they spoiled a strong start by Jake Toporek.

The Rockers will play Royal Oak again Sunday night at 6:35 p.m.

Glory women return to Capital Credit Union Park Sunday

The Green Bay Glory will return to Ashwaubenon on Sunday for one of their final matches of the season. They will welcome Chicago Kicks to Capital Credit Union Park.

In their last match, the Glory women finished their weekend with a 6-0 win against the Recruits, a group of high school players from across the state. They posted a 2-0 lead at halftime before pouring it on in the second half.  In their fixture before that, the Glory lost 2-0 to the Milwaukee Torrent FC on Friday. One of those two goals came as a penalty kick in the 91st minute.

Sunday's match begins at 3 p.m.

Friday

Friday night’s game between the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers and South Bend Cubs has been rained out.  The contest will be made up as part of a doubleheader on Saturday evening at Neuroscience Group Field with game one scheduled to start at 5:00pm CDT.  This is the second home rainout of the season for the Timber Rattlers.

Fans who had tickets to Friday’s game may exchange those tickets for tickets of equal or lesser value for any remaining Wisconsin home game over the remainder of the 2024 regular season.

Saturday features a single-admission doubleheader with two seven-inning games scheduled to be played.  Game two will start no earlier than thirty minutes after the conclusion of game one.  The parking lot opens at 3:30pm with the gates to the stadium opening at 4:30pm on Saturday.

Wisconsin has announced that Will Rudy (1-5, 5.68) will be their starting pitcher in game one and Yujanyer Herrera (4-1, 4.00) will start the nightcap.  The Cubs will go with Drew Gray (0-2, 4.15) in game one and Will Sanders (1-3, 4.84) in game two.

Door County Pickleball Club Gears Up for a record setting 2024 Outdoor Season

The 2024 outdoor Pickleball season for the Door County Pickleball Club is gearing up for another record-breaking season. To start the 2024 outdoor season, the Door County Pickleball Club held its back-to-summer gathering at Sunset Park in Sturgeon Bay on Sunday, June 9th, and over 100 players (see attached picture) joined the fun. Jay Renstrom, President of the Door County Pickleball Club, states, “If this event is any indication of what’s to come, the county will need more Pickleball Courts.”

Renstrom mentioned that the Door County Pickleball Club ended the year with just over 400 paid members last year. He states, ‘This year we hope to significantly surpass last year as we already have nearly 400 members and it’s only June 10th.  Our Facebook page is continually increasing, with nearly 1,400 members. Renstrom mentioned that a great indication of how membership is performing is to keep track of the percentage of new members. The Door County Pickleball Club has consistently surpassed a new member rate of 20% annually; this year, we are near 30%. The members and the hard work of the Executive Committee of the Door County Pickleball Club are responsible for the tremendous growth we consistently see here in Door County regarding Pickleball. Every penny received through dues and donations returns to supporting and growing Pickleball here in Door County. We support all Pickleball locations from Washington Island to Sturgeon Bay.

The Door County Pickleball Club has many great events planned for the upcoming outdoor season. They will hold a doubles tournament next weekend and a singles tournament in early July at Sunset Park. LevelUP Pickleball Camp, the nation’s leading Pickleball camp, will come to Door County on June 29th and June 30th to provide world-class instruction. The Annual Summer Social Event will take place in August. In late August, pro-Pickleball players Susannah Barr and Dominic Catalano will be coming to Door County on August 23rd and 24th to hold clinics and play with the pro sessions at the town of Sevastopol Courts.

Blizzard looks for bounceback vs. Oilers

After seeing their winning streak end last week, the Green Bay Blizzard will try to start a new one when they travel to Tulsa to take on the Oilers on Saturday night.

Last weekend, the Blizzard found themselves chasing the Quad Cities Steamwheelers the entire night after they jumped out to a 21-3 lead midway through the second quarter. Quarterback Max Meylor piled up yards with more than 250 all-purpose yards, but he could not find the endzone through the air and rushed for only one score. EJ Burgess and Jalyn Cagle also scored on the ground in the loss.

Kickoff is Tulsa is set for 7:05 p.m.

Indians battle Kolberg on 105.1 The GOAT Sunday

The Egg Harbor Indians will host the Kolberg Braves on Sunday afternoon in Door County League baseball.

The Indians are coming off a see-saw 10-8 win over the Baileys Harbor A's last Sunday as Eric Dejardine had two hits with two RBIs to lead the way for Egg Harbor. Five others batted in at least one run, and Anthony Jennerjohn and Cory Fuller also had multi-hit games.  Jace Johnson picked up the win for Egg Harbor in relief.

Kohlberg hasn't played in two weeks after last Saturday's old-timers and regular-season game against Maplewood were rained out.

The Braves are led by Trevor Reinhardt, who is hitting .500 for the season, good for second in the league behind Caleb Cornell for the Islanders. Jack Peterson and Devin Schinktgen are hitting over .400 for Kolberg, which has three of the top five hitters in the DCL.

Cory Fuller is the Indians' top hitter with a .382 batting average.

Paul Schmitt and Henry Annen will have the call on 105.1 The GOAT, 1051TheGOAT.com, and NEWRadioSportsNetwork.com beginning at 1:15 p.m. with the pregame show followed by the first pitch at 1:30 p.m. from Egg Harbor Park.

POSTPONED: Cubs, Ports meet under the lights on 105.1 The GOAT

Note: This game has been postponed due to weather. A make-up date and time has not been determined as of 2:30 p.m.

Two teams trying to reverse their team's fortunes will meet Friday night when Institute welcomes West Jacksonport to Sevastopol Town Park.

The Cubs are still looking for their first win of the season after being shut out by Washington Island 16-0 on Sunday. Nick Peterson, Frankie Ash, Jaeger Brusky, Caleb Hoffman, and Arthur Hocevar picked up hits in the loss for the Cubs.

The Ports have only one win on their ledger for the season after they lost to Sister Bay on the road 3-2 on Sunday. The Ports took a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning thanks to two wild pitches that scored Riley Cordier and Eric Bley, but they gave up two in the bottom half of the frame before being walked off in the 11th.

Weather permitting, Tim Kowols will have the call on 105.1 The GOAT, 1051TheGOAT.com, and NEWRadioSportsNetwork.com beginning at 7:15 p.m. with the pregame show followed by the first pitch at 7:30 p.m.

Skenandor slugs 'Guins past Bandits

A late three-run homer proved the difference as the Algoma Penguins registered the 6-4 victory over the Manitowoc Bandits.

The two teams traded runs early before  Brayden Skenandor homered to left field, driving in three and flipping a 4-3 Bandits lead into a 6-4 Penguins advantage.

Skenandor registered two of the Penguins' three hits, but they kept innings and opportunities to score alive thanks to five drawn walks and three Bandits errors. Jaden Dillar collected the other hit for the Penguins in the victory.

Will Jandrin earned the win for the Penguins, allowing two hits and one run over two innings while striking out one.

Rockers swept by Mallards

The Green Bay Rockers had a rough day in the state capital on Thursday, losing a pair of games to the Madison Mallards 9-1 and 4-3.

In game one, the Mallards were up 5-0 before the Rockers tallied a run with a Lane Allen homer. The Mallards would answer with two consecutive innings with at least two runs, something they accomplished four times in the seven-inning contest. Allen and Sam Miller each had two hits in the loss for the Rockers.

In game two, the Rockers rallied from three down to tie the game in the fifth inning, only to have the Mallards retake the lead in sixth. Allen hit his second homer of the day in the fourth inning and Nick Harms went yard in the fifth to drive in the runs for the Rockers.

Wisconsin scores two in seventh to top South Bend 3-2

Early in the second half of the Midwest League season, the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers had seen their opponents steal some of the late-inning magic that propelled Wisconsin to a first half pennant.  The playoff-bound Rattlers had seen enough of that as they scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to rally past the South Bend Cubs to a 3-2 victory at Neuroscience Group Field on Thursday night.

Wisconsin (44-28 overall, 2-3, second half) scored first with a run in the second inning.  Eduardo García singled and Tayden Hall doubled with one out.  Ram?n Rodríguez drove in García with a ground out for the 1-0 lead.

The Timber Rattlers loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the fourth.  South Bend starter Nick Dean escaped the jam without allowing a run with two strikeouts and an out at the plate as Felix Valerio tried to score on a ball that got away from catcher Ethan Hearn.

Reivaj Garcia tripled to start the top of the fifth and Wisconsin starting pitcher K.C. Hunt almost pulled a similar escape act.  Hunt struck out the next two batters.  Then, Brett Bateman doubled off the wall in left to score Garcia with the tying run.

The Cubs (31-41, 4-2) took the lead with a two-out rally in the top of the sixth against Chase Costello.  The Wisconsin reliever retired the first two batters he faced in the inning but walked Jordan Nwogu on a 3-2 pitch.  Nwogu stole second and would score when Ed Howard doubled to right on a 1-2- pitch from Costello.

Rodríguez started the Wisconsin rally in the seventh with a one-out double.  Eduarqui Fernández chopped a single through the right side of the infield and Rodríguez scored to tie the game.  The throw home was offline and Fernández was able to advance to second base.  Luis Lara moved Fernández to third with an infield single.  Gregory Barrios drove in Fernández with a sacrifice fly to center for the 3-2 lead.

Aaron Rund pitched a 1-2-3 top of the eighth for Wisconsin.

Yerlin Rodriguez was called upon to get the final three outs, but he made it interesting for the 4,809 in attendance.  Howard started the inning with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt.  Rodriguez struck out the next batter to bring Rafael Morel to the plate.  Morel, who had an RBI single to cap South Bend’s three-run ninth inning in their 5-4 win on Wednesday, hit a routine flyball to Lara in center for the final out.

Rodriguez earned his sixth save of the season as the Rattlers won their first one-run game of the second half. Wisconsin had been 0-3 in one-run games to start the second half.

Jadher Areinamo extended his hitting streak to eleven games with a single in the third inning on Thursday.

The game was played in front of Wisconsin’s biggest home crowd of the season.

The series – and Udder Tuggers Weekend – continues Friday night at Neuroscience Group Field.  Will Rudy (1-5, 5.68) is set to start for Wisconsin.  Drew Gray (0-2, 4.15) is set to start for the Cubs.  Game time is 6:40pm.

Kolberg reschedules postponed Maplewood game

After last weekend's rains forced Kolberg to scrap its rare Saturday matchups, we now know when at least one of the games will take place.

The Braves will welcome Maplewood to its ballpark on July 13th for a 1:30 p.m. first pitch. It will likely be part of a busy stretch for several Braves players with games on July 7th (Sister Bay at home) and 14th (Institute on the road) and the All-Star Game against the Shoreland League on July 11th.

A casualty of the rain-induced postponement was its scheduled old-timers game that was scheduled to take place before last weekend's Mets/Braves matchup. They will try again next year to hold an old-timers game.

Rockers sink Rafters

The Green Bay Rockers turned a slim one-run lead in the third inning into a 10-run blowout as they beat the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters 12-2 on Wednesday night.

Two RBI singles and a run-scoring sacrifice fly gave the Rockers an early 3-1 lead they would let dwindle but never give up. The Rockers scored at least one run in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings before blowing the game wide open in the eighth inning with a five-run frame. That inning was highlighted by a one-out grand slam slugged by Mateo Matthews.

Matthews had five RBI on the night, while Sam Miller and Cooper Kelly each brought home two. The Rockers pounded out 14 hits in the win, including three from Mulivai Levu and five others with at least two hits. Conner Nolen improved to 5-1 on the season, striking out four across three scoreless inning in relief.

Former Gamblers coach to lead Canadian national team

Over the next few years, the Canadian National Team for hockey will have the fingerprints of a former Green Bay Gamblers head coach.

Hockey Canada announced earlier this week that former Gamblers boss and current Tampa Bay Lightning head coach Jon Cooper will lead the Canadian national team for the 2025 4 Nations Face-Off and the 2026 Winter Olympics.

After leading the Gamblers to a Clark Cup championship, the British Columbia native worked his way up the coaching chain. At 12 years, he is now the longest-tenured head coach in the NHL. His tenure with the Tampa Bay Lightning includes two Stanley Cup wins.

Cubs Get the Final Rally to Beat Wisconsin

The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to take a 4-2 lead over the South Bend Cubs on Wednesday afternoon at Neuroscience Group Field.  Then, the Cubs scored three runs in the top of the ninth inning to rally to a 5-4 victory.

Wisconsin (43-28 overall, 1-4 second half) scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the fourth inning.  Luke Adams drew a walk to start the frame.  Matt Wood lined a double to right-center to score Adams for the 1-0 lead.

Tate Kuehner, the Timber Rattlers starting pitcher, was very good over five innings.  The lefty allowed a walk and a single with two outs in the first inning.  Then, Kuehner retired the next thirteen batters in a row.  He left after five shutout innings with five strikeouts.

South Bend (31-40, 4-1) tied the game in the top of the sixth as reliever Patricio Aquino gave up consecutive singles to start the inning.  Rafael Morel had the lead-off single with Brett Bateman following with a single to right that pushed Morel to third.  Pedro Ramirez drove in Morel by grounding into a force play.

Morel and Bateman set up the go-ahead run for the Cubs in the eighth against Aquino.  Morel tripled to start the frame.  Bateman singled through the drawn-in infield and South Bend had a 2-1 lead.

Wisconsin rallied to retake the lead in the bottom of the eighth.  Jadher Areinamo and Luke drew walks to start the rally.  Wood moved both runners into scoring position with a ground out.  Eduardo Garcia’s blooper to center glanced off the glove of Bateman, who was making a sliding attempt at the catch.  Both Areinamo and Adams scored for a 3-2 lead.  Tayden Hall added an insurance run with a single to score Garcia for a 4-2 lead.

In the top of the ninth, Will Childers was called to the mound for the Rattlers and gave up a double to Jonathan Long and a single off the glove of Garcia at short.  Ed Howard was next, and his routine fly to right kept carrying until it was out of the reach of Jheremy Vargas for an RBI double that pulled the Cubs within a run and put the tying and lead runs in scoring position.

Jordan Nwogu drove in the tying run with a sacrifice fly.  Childers got the second out with a strikeout to bring Morel back to the plate one more time.  Morel singled to drive in Howard to put the Cubs in front by a run.

Areinamo, who had extended his hitting streak to a season-high ten games with a double earlier in the game, singled to start Wisconsin’s half of the ninth inning against Yovanny Cabrera.  The Rattlers could do nothing with the opportunity and did not score in the ninth as they dropped their third straight game.

This is only the second time Wisconsin has lost three games in a row this season.  Wednesday was also just the second time the Rattlers have lost a game when trailing heading into the ninth inning.  Wisconsin is now 35-2 when leading after eight innings this season.

Adams walked twice and was hit by a pitch in the game.  He has been hit by a pitch twenty times this season.  Darrien Miller (24 in 2022) and Brandon Macias (21 in 2012) are the only other Rattlers to be hit by a pitch 20 or more times in a season.

Areinamo was 2-for-4 on Wednesday.  He is 16-for-40 during his current hitting streak.  Wednesday also marked the 22nd multi-hit game of the season for Areinamo.

Game three of the series is Thursday night.  Wisconsin has K.C. Hunt (2-1, 3.38) set to go as their starting pitcher.  South Bend has Nick Dean (4-0, 1.93) as their starter.  Game time is 6:40pm.

Brewers win third straight, top Rangers 3-1

Behind a strong pitching performance by Bryce Wilson, the Milwaukee Brewers defeated the Texas Rangers 3-1 at American Family Field on Tuesday night.

Wilson pitched six shutout innings after entering the game in the third inning for opener Hoby Miller and struck out four while allowing only three hits.  Elvis Peguero picked up his second save of the season, pitching a scoreless ninth inning.

Texas scored in the first inning off Milner on an RBI single by Josh Smith, but that was all the Rangers could offensively muster against the Brewers.

Milwaukee tied the score in the third on an RBI single by Jackson Chourio and took the lead for good on a solo homer by Joey Ortiz in the fifth.  Rhys Hoskins added an insurance run with an RBI single in the seventh inning.

The Brewers (47-33) will look to take the series this afternoon with first pitch set for 1:10 p.m.

Algoma Penguins Rally Defeats Kewaunee

Algoma Penguins rallied to top Kewaunee 7-5 on Tuesday at Algoma. Algoma Penguins trailed by as many as four runs during the game.

Kewaunee jumped out to the lead in the top of the fourth inning after an error scored one run, and Wyatt Kruse doubled, scoring two runs.

Algoma Penguins took the lead in the bottom of the eighth inning after Tyler Neinas walked, Kewaunee committed an error, and Algoma Penguins scored on a wild pitch, each scoring one run.

Drew Price led things off on the mound for Algoma Penguins. The right-handed pitcher gave up five hits and three runs (zero earned) over five innings, striking out five and walking four. Joe Anderson led things off on the bump for Kewaunee. The southpaw surrendered four hits and three runs (two earned) over six innings, striking out 16 and walking seven. Charlie Prokash pitched one inning of no-run ball for Algoma Penguins in relief. They allowed one hit, striking out three and walking none.

Next up for Algoma Penguins is a game against Manitowoc on Thursday.

Rattlers doubled up by South Bend

The South Bend Cubs scored two runs in the first and four runs in the third on Tuesday night at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium.  It was enough for them to defeat the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers 8-4.  Jonathan Long led South Bend with three hits, two walks, three runs scored, and three RBI.

The Cubs (30-40 overall, 3-1 second half) scored twice with two outs in the top of the first inning.  Wisconsin starting pitcher Mark Manfredi retired the first two Cubs he faced.  Then, Long singled and Brian Kalmer walked to extend the inning.  Patrick Chavers drove both runners in with a triple to right-center for a 2-0 led.

South Bend extended their lead with four runs in the third inning.  The first two batters reached base.  Long hit a three-run home run for a 5-0 lead.

Later in the inning, Kalmer, who had been hit by a pitch and moved to second on a wild pitch, was driven across the plate on a single by Ed Howard.

Tayden Hall got the Rattlers (43-27, 1-3) on the scoreboard in the fourth and sixth innings.  Hall’s RBI single in the fourth knocked in Eduardo Garcia.  In the sixth, Luke Adams scored from second when Hall’s infield single was misplayed by Pedro Ramirez.

The teams traded two-run home runs in the ninth inning.  Long reached base for the fifth time in the game when he walked to start the top of the ninth inning against Stiven Cruz.  Chavers cracked a long home run to right for his second home run of the season.  In the bottom of the ninth, Jadher Areinamo, who is on a nine-game hitting streak for the Rattlers, doubled.  Felix Valerio hit a pitch from Jose Romero to the Left Field Lofts for a homer, the first for Valerio since he joined the Rattlers last week.

Wisconsin had ten hits in the game but were only 3-for-16 with runners in scoring position.

Hall went 3-for-3 with a walk to reach base in all four of his plate appearances on Tuesday.  Areinamo, who is 14-for-36 during his hitting streak, was 2-for-4 in the game to earn his 21st multi-hit game of the season.

Game two of the series is Wednesday afternoon at Neuroscience Group Field.  Tate Kuehner (3-1, 3.20) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers.  Erian Rodriguez (0-1, 5.40) is set to start for the Cubs.  Game time is 12:10pm.

The Timber Rattlers will celebrate baseball’s Hispanic Heritage with their second Los Cascabeles de Wisconsin game of the season.  Players and coaches will wear their Cascabeles uniforms for this game.

Third locker room paves the way for more events at Lambeau Field

The Green Bay Packers hope the adage of "If You Build It, They Will Come" proves true after they received funding for a third locker room.

According to Green Bay media outlets, the Stadium District Board announced it will support the Packers' request to build a third locker room with $3 million. The Packers will contribute more than $2 million for the project. The money comes from user fees embedded in the cost of tickets.

Packers spokesperson Aaron Popkey says the third locker room will allow the team to host more events, such as college football games and international soccer friendlies. The home locker room is not available for other teams to use, and an auxiliary gym on the stadium's campus is no longer an option. It is suggested that the locker room will be open in time for the Packers to host a college football game between Wisconsin and Notre Dame in 2026.

Woodchucks topple Rockers

The Green Bay Rockers stumbled for the second straight day in Wausau on Monday, this time losing 12-5 to the host Woodchucks.

This time, it was a seven-run fifth inning that did in the Rockers, sucking the momentum away after tying the game at 3-3. The Rockers would match the Woodchucks runs with runs scored from that point on with single tallies in the sixth and ninth innings.

Taylor Shultz went 3-4 with two runs scored and another batted in to lead the Rockers. Sam Miller made his lone hit count when he hit a home run for his second RBI of the game. Connor Nolen suffered his first loss of the season for the Rockers, giving up seven runs (7 ER) on three hits and four walks across 2/3 of an inning.

Packers sign kicker

Days after cutting one kicker, the Green Bay Packers have signed another ahead of next month's training camp.

The organization claimed K James Turner off waivers from the Detroit Lions. Turner was with the Lions for just a few months after joining the team after completing his career at Michigan. Per Packers.com, he played one season for the Wolverines (2023) after four years at the University of Louisville. Overall, Turner finished with 65 of 80 (81.3 pct.) field goals made, 189 of 193 (97.9 pct.) extra points made and a total of 384 points.

Glory sweeps Sunday fixtures

Battling sunshine instead of storms for the first time all weekend, the Green Bay Glory soccer teams took home a pair of victories on Sunday.

The Glory women finished their weekend with a 6-0 win against the Recruits, a group of high school players from across the state. They posted a 2-0 lead at halftime before pouring it on in the second half.

The Glory men were able to stay anchored in second place in their conference with a 1-0 victory.

Both teams will play the Chicago Dutch Lions in a doubleheader at UWGB on Wednesday.

Road Trip Ends with Close Loss to TinCaps

The Fort Wayne TinCaps had just enough to beat the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers 6-5 on Sunday afternoon at Parkview Field.   The Rattlers trailed by two runs heading into the ninth inning before loading the bases with no outs.  However, Wisconsin could score just one run and fell in the final game of their two-week road trip.

The TinCaps (30-39 overall, 2-1 second half) scored four runs in the bottom of the second inning to take the lead.  Anthony Vilar doubled to start the inning.  Tyler Robertson singled to drive in Vilar.  Wisconsin starting pitcher Alexander Cornielle hit Josh Mears on an 0-2 pitch to put two runners on base.  Nerwilian Cedeño followed with a double to score Robertson and send Mears to third base.

Then, Homer Bush Jr. hit a hard grounder to short.  Gregory Barrios came home with the throw, but it was offline, and Mears scored.  Romeo Sanabria drove in the final run of the inning with a sacrifice fly.

Wisconsin (43-26, 1-2) responded with a two-out rally in the third thanks to a little help from the TinCaps.  Dwayne Matos retired the first two batters he faced before walking Jadher Areinamo and hitting Luke Adams.  Matt Wood loaded the bases with a sharp single to right.

Felix Valerio hit a hard grounder to third and the ball glanced off the glove of Devin Ortiz.  Areinamo and Adams scored on the play with Wood heading for third.  Shortstop Jay Beshears tracked down the ball near the foul line in left and fired to third.  However, the ball hit Wood and deflected away to allow Wood to score.

The teams traded runs later in the game.  Fort Wayne added a run to their lead on a two-out, RBI single by Vilar in the bottom of the fifth.  In the top of the sixth, Eduardo García doubled, took third on a grounder to the right side of the infield, and scored on a wild pitch by Sam Whiting.

Bush singled to start the bottom of the seventh inning and stole second, his 32nd stolen base of the season.  Sanabria singled to center and Bush easily scored the insurance run for the 6-4 lead.

Wisconsin did not go quietly in the ninth inning against Fort Wayne closer Manul Castro.  Barrios reached on an error with Areinamo and Adams following with singles to load the bases with no outs.  Castro got Matt Wood to ground into a 4-6-3 double play that allowed a run to score and the tying run to take third base.  Castro ended the game with a strikeout for his fifth save of the season.

The teams split the six-game series at Parkview Field with the Timber Rattlers winning the season series by taking seven of the twelve meetings between the teams.  Wisconsin finished their twelve-game road trip with a 7-5 record.

The Timber Rattlers are off on Monday.  Their next game is Tuesday night against the South Bend Cubs at Neuroscience Group Field.  Mark Manfredi (4-1, 3.20) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers.  Ty Johnson (0-2, 8.68) is set to start for the Cubs.  Game time is 6:40pm.

Big inning unplugs Rockers vs. Woodchucks

A nine-run second inning proved fatal for the Green Bay Rockers as they lost their Sunday matinee to the Wausau Woodchucks 11-7.

A Seth Farni RBI single got the Rockers on the scoreboard first in the second inning, but seven hits and nine errors later, it was 9-1 Woodchucks. The Rockers would get single tallies in the third, fifth, and seventh innings before they registered three in the ninth inning as they posed a rally. All three of those runs came on a bases-clearing double by Seth Farni. He finished the day 2-4 with the strikeout. Lane Allen had three hits and Mateo Matthews also posted two hits. Jagger Edwards took the loss for the Rockers, giving up six runs (5 ER) on four hits in just 1 1/3 innings.

Rockers strike back against Jacks

A day after losing to the Battle Creek Jacks 2-1 in extra innings, the Green Bay Rockers struck back in a big way with a 10-3 win on Saturday afternoon.

The Rockers put up a crooked number in three different innings, including a four-run fifth inning that slammed the door on any hope the Jacks had coming back in the game.

Sam Miller and Payton Mansfield had impressive games at the plate, both driving in four runs apiece and having a home run to their credit. Luke Moeller and Nick Harms also registered RBI for the Rockers in the win. They are back in action on Sunday with a road game at Wausau against the Woodchucks at 1:05 p.m.

Rodriguez Homers Twice in Wisconsin Win

It wasn’t pretty, but the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers will take Saturday’s 7-4 win over the Fort Wayne TinCaps at Parkview Field as they near the end of their two-week road trip against teams from the East Division of the Midwest League.  Ram?n Rodríguez provided a spark with two homers for the offense.  Yujanyer Herrera, who looked like he might not get out of the first inning, allowed one run over five frames for his fourth win of the season.

The Timber Rattlers (43-25 overall, 1-1 second half) loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the first inning against Fort Wayne starting pitcher Dylan Lesko.  Eduardo Garcia doubled to start the game.  Gregory Barrios was hit by a pitch and Jadher Areinamo singled sharply to center with Garcia stopping at third.  Lesko escaped the jam with a strikeout, a popout, and a flyout.

Fort Wayne (29-39, 1-1) had a runner at first with one out in their half of the first inning.  Then, Herrera and Devin Ortiz battled to an eleven pitch at bat as Ortiz fouled off six different 2-2 pitches from Herrera before lining a single to left.  Herrera walked the next batter to load the bases.  Herrera got ahead of Josh Mears with two quick strikes but missed with his next four to walk Mears and force in a run.  Herrera got the final out of the inning on a force play with his 38th pitch of the frame.

Rodríguez provided the offense that put Wisconsin in front.  First, he tied the game with a one-out, solo homer in the second to tie the game.  Then, Rodríguez hit a two-out, solo homer in the fourth for a 2-1 lead.  This is the second time this season Rodríguez had hit two homers in a game.  He has hit five home runs this season.

Herrera gutted his way through five innings and didn’t allow another run as he protected the lead once he had it.  He walked three and struck out three while tossing 88 pitched in the game.

The Rattlers added to their lead in the sixth.  Tayden Hall’s sacrifice fly scored Luke Adams from third for a 3-1 lead.

Wisconsin hitters went for the cycle in the top of the seventh to add four runs to their advantage against reliever Jose Geraldo.  Eduarqui Fernández started the rally with a double and went to third on a wild pitch.  Garcia, who had three hits on Saturday, shot a single through the drawn-in infield to score Fernández.  Barrios followed with a triple to left-center.  Another wild pitch by Geraldo allowed Barrios to score.  Areinamo capped the inning with a long home run to center for a 7-1 lead.  The homer was Areinamo’s fifth of the season.

Fort Wayne scored twice in the bottom of the sixth off Wisconsin reliever Brian Fitzpatrick.  Griffin Doersching doubled and took third on a wild pitch.  Nik McClaughry drove in Doersching with a ground out.  Homer Bush Jr singled and stole second.  Ethan Salas flared a single to left with two outs.  Barrios was able to field the ball and fire an off-balance throw to the plate, but Bush was just fast enough to avoid the tag to score a run to cut Wisconsin’s lead to four.

Fitzpatrick pitched a scoreless eighth inning and went back out for the ninth.  McClaughry started the inning when he reached on an error on Hall.  Bush sent a grounder to third with the throw going to second for the force out.  However, Areinamo dropped the throw and the TinCaps had two on with no outs.  Fitzpatrick got the first out of the inning on a strikeout.  Then, Salas reached on a weak grounder that went for a single to load the bases, bring the tying run to the plate, and brought Chase Costello in from the Wisconsin bullpen.

Costello needed just three pitches to close out his second save of the season.  Ortiz grounded out to first to score a run.  Vilar was retired on a routine fly to Garcia for the final out.

The victory guaranteed Wisconsin a winning road trip.  The team went 4-2 at West Michigan last week.  Saturday’s win gives them a 3-2 lead in the series with the TinCaps.

The final game of Wisconsin’s twelve-game road trip is Sunday afternoon at Parkview Field.  Alexander Cornielle (3-2, 3.24) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers.  Braden Nett (0-0, 11.42) is set to start for the TinCaps.  Game time is 12:05pm CDT.

Buy the Lightest Most Expensive Paddle You Can Afford! : Kayak Series III

Here we are at the first official weekend of summer with three, four and, maybe
five great months of kayaking and kayak fishing ahead of us in beautiful Door
County! I’d like to touch on a very important piece of equipment that many give
less thought to than that kayak they buy, the paddle.

I know first-hand from when I started kayaking that a heavy paddle can dampen a
great day on the water, so my suggestion is to buy the lightest most expensive
paddle you can afford. Personally, I am using paddles that weigh 26 to 30 ounces
and I’d suggest you use a paddle no heavier than 32 ounces. Just like that great
kayak you purchased, your paddle is going to last for many years, even if you’re
rough on your equipment. You don’t have to spend $300 to $500 to get a great
paddle. There are some very nice, affordable paddles on the market with carbon
ferrules and fiberglass blades in that 30 to 32- ounce range.

When considering a new paddle, you will want to check out one of the length
charts you can find on-line. Your height and the width of your kayak are part of
picking the correct length. Also, most of you will be fine with a two-piece snap
ferrule, but some paddles can be adjusted up to 15 cm which can be helpful for
different water and wind conditions. Another consideration will be what size
paddle blade you should select. The standard blade is usually best for lighter sit-in
recreational kayaks and over-sized blades for the heavier sit-on-top
fishing/recreational kayaks. However, both will work for either type of kayak.

As always wear your PDF (lifejacket) and if you’re out alone, let someone know
where you’re kayaking. I hope my tips will be helpful when you buy a new
paddle. If you have any questions, I’m always happy to help. Just email me at

Kolberg goes old-school in Saturday matinee

The old ballfield in Kolberg will host two games on Saturday. The legends of yesteryear will take the field before the stars of today battle after.

The rare Saturday showdowns will feature an old-timers game at 11 a.m., followed by the Braves hosting Maplewood at 2:30 p.m.

The Braves continued their winning ways on Sunday with a 14-1 win over West Jacksonport. In addition to drawing six walks and taking advantage of three errors, the Braves posted 17 hits in the win. Trevor Reinhardt led the way with four hits, Jack Peterson and Austen Rohe had three hits, and Kyle Routhieaux and Nick LeCaptain had two. Rohe's hits were the big ones, as he drove in four runs, while Routhieaux and Peterson also had multi-RBI days. Jake Schneider earned the win for the Braves, allowing just one run on four hits while striking out 11.

After starting with an undefeated mark, the Mets have dropped two straight after losing a pitcher's duel on Sunday 3-0 to Sister Bay. The Bays' Sam Forkert and the Mets' Jeremiah Jahnke went toe-to-toe in their pitching performances. Jahnke went eight innings, allowing just one run on six hits while striking out seven. Adam Gutschow had two of the Mets' four hits in the loss.

Blizzard start season-ending road trip in Quad Cities

It will be almost a month before the Green Bay Blizzard potentially plays a home game again when they start their four-game road trip on Saturday against the Quad Cities Steamwheelers.

In their 64-36 win over the Steamwheelers on May 31st, the Blizzard scored at least two touchdowns in every quarter, including 22 points in the fourth quarter. Max Meylor had another five-touchdown day, including three through the air in the win, as he threw for over 230 yards. Meylor's three touchdown passes were to three different receivers. Running back EJ Burgess rushed for just under 40 yards and four touchdowns.

Kickoff is set for 7:05 p.m.

Glory men welcome Chicago Ghost to Banta Bowl

The Green Bay Glory men will play the first of back-to-back games at the Banta Bowl on Saturday when they host Chicago Ghost FC at 7 p.m.

It was heartbreak at the Banta Bowl last Saturday night when they lost a 2-0 lead and went on to lose 3-2 to division-leading Edgewater Castle. They defeated Chicago Ghost in Waukegan earlier this season as a part of a campaign-opening winning streak.

The Glory men will also play the back end of a doubleheader with the women's side on Sunday when they play Strikers Fox Valley FC at 6 p.m.

In women's action, the Glory lost 2-0 to the Milwaukee Torrent FC. One of those two goals came as a penalty kick in the 91st minute.

Mears Beats Rattlers With Walkoff Homer

Josh Mears hit a two-out, two-run home run in the bottom of the ninth inning to lead the Fort Wayne TinCaps to a 5-4 win over the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers Friday night at Parkview Field.  Matt Wood gave the Rattlers a 4-3 lead with a two-out, RBI single in the top of the ninth.  However, the Rattlers couldn’t hold for a win to open the second half of the Midwest League season.

Wisconsin (42-25 overall, 0-1 second half) took the lead in the top of the second inning.  Singles by Felix Valerio and Jesús Chirinos were followed by a walk to Tayden Hall to load the bases.  Jheremy Vargas sent a grounder to third and Devin Ortiz tried to step on third and throw to first for an inning ending double play.  However, Vargas beat the throw to first and Valerio scored for a 1-0 lead.

In the bottom of the second, Ortiz hit a grounder to short with a runner at first, but this time it was the Rattlers who couldn’t turn two.  They got the force at second, but Ortiz reached.  Anthony Vilar was next, and he ripped a grounder fair inside the bag at first.  The ball got into the corner and by the time it was back to the infield, Ortiz scored and Vilar was on third base.  Mears gave Fort Wayne (29-38, 1-0) the lead with a sacrifice fly to center.

Homer Bush Jr. hit a lead-off homer in the third inning to put the TinCaps up 3-1.

The Timber Rattlers tied the game with single runs in the fifth and sixth inning.

Luis Lara singled with two outs in the fifth.  Gregory Barrios reached on an error that allowed Lara to take third base.  Barrios stole second and Vilar had the ball pop out of his glove as he went to throw to second.  The ball trickled to the grass behind the plate and Lara raced home to score the run.

In the sixth, Luke Adams walked but was caught trying to steal second.  The Rattlers loaded the bases again on a double by Matt Wood, an infield single by Valerio that kept Wood at second, and a single by Chirinos.  Hall’s sacrifice fly to left was deep enough to score Wood with the tying run.

Wisconsin couldn’t convert on a one-out double in the seventh and a one-out single in the eighth.  It was a different story in the ninth.

Lara reached on an error and Barrios had an infield single.  They were still at first and second with two outs and a 1-2 pitch due to Wood.  The Rattlers catcher lined a base hit to right and Lara barely beat the throw home to give the Rattlers a 4-3 lead.

Rudy didn’t allow a run after the third and he worked through six innings while keeping the offense close.  Aaron Rund pitched two perfect innings out of the Rattlers bullpen before turning the game over to Will Childers in the bottom of the ninth.

Childers gave up singles to the first two batters he faced in Ethan Salas and Ortiz.  Vilar was called on to bunt and he popped into a double play.  Luke Adams was charging from third and made a diving catch before firing to second to double Salas off for the double play to get the Rattlers within an out of victory.

Mears, who had a solo homer on Tuesday and a three-run homer on Thursday, stepped in an cracked a 1-0 pitch off the windows of The 400 Club in center for a two-run, walkoff homer and a 5-4 Fort Wayne win.

Friday’s loss was the first walkoff defeat suffered by the Timber Rattlers.

Game five of the series is Saturday night at Parkview Field.  Yujanyer Herrera (3-1, 4.35) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers.  The TinCaps have named Dylan Lesko (1-4, 6.34) as their starting pitcher.  Game time is 5:35pm CDT.

Stretching across multiple sports, there has been no shortage of activity among the area schools regarding its coaching staffs.

Southern Door is looking for head coach candidates after Jerry Englebert (wrestling), John Berns (baseball), and Courtney Renard (softball) all resigned. They have been able to fill some spots with Alyssa Conway (girls' basketball), Scott Mallien (football), and Scott Biemeret (girls' wrestling.)

The Sturgeon Bay School Board was greeted by several resignations earlier this week, though one of those positions has been filled. Erin Peterson is resigning from her head coaching position for the boys' DCU swim team to resume coaching the girl's team. John Rosenthal is resigning from coaching track. Troy Hasenjager is resigning as the Head Coach for Track and will be replaced by Morgan Harding, who also became the head cross-country coach earlier in the school year.  Jackie Herlache is resigning from coaching varsity girls’ softball. Carl Waterstreet also resigned from his position as head football coach, but new athletic director Jonathan Dupuis will be the interim head coach.

Some new faces will be guiding teams at Sevastopol this upcoming school year. The resignation of Superintendent Kyle Luedtke did not just open a void in that office but also on the bench for the boys' basketball team. That spot was filled earlier this spring when Tom Ash slid over from the girls' team to the boys' team to fill that role. Annie Kapolnek has stepped down as the cross country coach for the Pioneers after guiding the squad to appearance in the state meet during the 2021 fall season. The new head football coach, Dan Judas, is still looking for someone to fill his position as assistant coach.

Morning practices on the docket for Packers training camp

First, the days were announced, but now the Green Bay Packers know when you should show up for their training camp practices.

All 15 open practices will begin at 10:30 a.m. beginning July 22nd, six of which will occur in the first seven days. After that, the open practices will primarily be on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. The exceptions to that are on August 1st and its joint practice with the Baltimore Ravens on August 22nd, both of which are on Thursday.

Rockers earn sweep of day-night doubleheader

The Green Bay Rockers had two wins on the opposite side of the spectrum on Thursday, winning in walk-off fashion 6-5 and in a blow-out 15-7 over the Minnesota Mud Puppies.

In game one, the Rockers found themselves down 5-1 after three innings to the Mud Puppies, but three runs in the fourth inning narrowed the deficit to one run. It would stay that way until the ninth inning when Sam Miller slugged a two-run homer over the right field wall to give the Rockers. In addition to Miller, Mateo Matthews and Mason Eckelman also homered for the Rockers.

In game two, the Rockers again found themselves down 5-1 after the Mud Puppies' top of the third inning. The Rockers would narrow that lead to 5-3 before they put up five runs in the fifth inning. They would add more insurance runs late, with four in the seventh and three more in the eighth. Luke Moeller slapped two doubles as he went 4-5 with five RBI. Mulivai Levu homered as one of four players with two RBI in the sweep-clinching win.

Glory women play home match against Torrent

The Green Bay Glory return to action at the Banta Bowl on Friday with a match against FC Milwaukee Torrent at 7 p.m.

The women lost their last match on the road against the Chicago Kics 3-2. Goalkeeper Isabella Jones scored one goal on a header off a corner kick, and Allison Raasch scored from about 40 yards out for the other tally.

The Glory will also be in action on Sunday as a part of a doubleheader with the Glory men when they play the Quad Cities Rush at 3 p.m.

First Half Finale Goes to Fort Wayne

The Fort Wayne TinCaps defeated the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers 5-1 on Thursday night at Parkview Field in the first half finale for both teams.  Consecutive homers for the TinCaps in the bottom of the third inning gave them a 5-0 lead as they cruised to the win.

Fort Wayne (28-38) loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the second inning.  Alain Camou drove in a run with a sacrifice fly for a 1-0 lead, but that was all the TinCaps would get in the inning.

Joshua Mears and Colton Bender hit back-to-back homers in the bottom of the third inning against Wisconsin starting pitcher K.C. Hunt.  Mears hit a three-run homer to left after a single and an error put two runners on with no outs.  Bender followed with a home run.

Hunt allowed five runs – four earned – on seven hits with two walks and five strikeouts over three innings.

The Timber Rattlers (42-24) couldn’t solve Fort Wayne starting pitcher Fernando Sanchez until the seventh inning.  The left-hander gave up a two-out double to Eduardo Garica and walked Jesús Chirinos in the top of the first inning.  He would retire the next fourteen batters he faced.  Luis Lara broke the streak with a one-out single in the sixth inning, but the Rattlers could do nothing in the sixth.

In the seventh, Chirinos and Ram?n Rodríguez singled to start the inning, but a force at third was the first out.  Then, Jheremy Vargas reached on an infield single to load the bases.  Terence Doston drove in Rodríguez with a sacrifice fly to get the Timber Rattlers on the scoreboard.  However, that was as close as the Rattlers would get.  Tyler Morgan tossed a perfect eighth and Manuel Castro worked a scoreless ninth as he pitched around a one-out double by Rodríguez.

Stiven Cruz and Patricio Aquino kept the TinCaps off the scoreboard after the third inning.  Cruz worked a scoreless fourth inning.  Aquino struck out five and allowed just one hit over four innings.

The loss ended Wisconsin’s four-game winning streak.  The loss also kept the 2024 Timber Rattlers, the first half West Division champions, tied with the 2001 Rattlers for the third-most wins in a half.  The 2001 Rattlers were 42-26 in both the first and second half of that season.  Only the 1996 Rattlers (46-21) and 2012 Rattlers (44-25) won more games in a half than this year’s team.

Game four of the series on Thursday night at Parkview Field is also the first game for the second half of the Midwest League season.  Will Rudy (1-5, 5.83) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers.  Fort Wayne has named Henry Baez (1-2, 3.94) as their starter.  Game time is 6:05pm CDT.

Rockers knock off Dock Spiders

Wednesday's game was well worth the wait for the Green Bay Rockers, who defeated their I-41 rivals, the Fond du Lac Dock Spiders, 5-3.

Nick Harms got things started in the third inning when he scored on a passed ball to make it 1-0. The Dock Spiders twice in the fourth inning before the Rockers tied things up on a Jake Bold fielder's choice in the fifth inning. The difference in the game came in the sixth inning when a hit by pitch and a sacrifice fly led to two Rockers runs. The two teams would trade runs in the eighth before Jake Toporek nailed down the save for the Rockers.

Kyle Dobyns earned the win for the Rockers, pitching four innings of scoreless relief while striking out three.  Sam Miller recorded the only multi-hit game for the Rockers.

Chirinos Drives in Five as Wisconsin Wins Fourth Straight

The fans of the Fort Wayne TinCaps came to see Yu Darvish on Wednesday night at Parkview Field.  It was Jesús Chirinos who put on the show.  Chirinos drove in five runs, including three on a home run to a rarely reached part of the ballpark, to lead the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers to an 8-3 victory.

The Rattlers (43-23) took the lead in the second inning against Darvish, who was on an MLB rehabilitation assignment for the San Diego Padres as the starting pitcher for the TinCaps.  Matt Wood and Felix Valerio singled with one out to put runners on first and second.  Darvish got Tayden Hall to hit a grounder to second.  The TinCaps got the force at second, but the throw to first was off the mark to keep the inning alive.

Eduarqui Fernández drove in Woods with an infield single that dribbled about halfway up the first baseline.  Then, Jesús Chirinos hit one a lot farther.  The Wisconsin designated hitter hit a home run to the roof of the 400 Club in dead center field.  The only other player to reach that spot in Parkview Field was Fernando Tatis Jr in 2017.  The homer was the sixth of the season for Chirinos.

Chirinos added a two-run single against Darvish in the fourth inning to put the Rattlers up 6-0.

Tate Kuhner, the Timber Rattlers starter was cruising through five innings.  He allowed one hit and struck out seven as he headed to the mound for the bottom of the sixth inning, which was just about the time a brief rain shower hit the stadium.  Kuehner gave up a walk and a single to the first two batters.  An error on Jadher Areinamo on a high chopper near second allowed a run to score and put runners on the corners with no outs.  Jay Beshears grounded into a force play at second to score a run.  Kuehner walked his second batter of the inning and that was all for him.

Chase Costello was called into action from the Wisconsin bullpen.  Costello gave up a single to right that loaded the bases before getting Nerwilian Cedeño to ground into an inning ending 6-3 double play.

The Timber Rattlers would get both of those runs back with single tallies in the seventh and eighth innings on an RBI single by Luis Lara and an RBI triple by Valerio.

Fort Wayne (27-38) got a run in the eighth inning on a single by Ethan Salas but that was it for their offense.

Kuehner earned his third win of the season as he struck out seven over 5-1/3 innings.  Valerio went 3-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI in his first game with Wisconsin this season.

The Timber Rattlers won their fourth straight game and have tied the 2001 Timber Rattlers for the third-most wins in a half.  The 2001 Rattlers went 42-26 in both the first and second halves of the Midwest League season when there were 70 games.  Only the 1996 Rattlers (46-21 in the first half) and the 2012 Rattlers (44-25) have won more games in a half that the 2024 Timber Rattlers.

Game three of the series is Thursday evening at Parkview Field and it is also the final game of the first half.  K.C. Hunt (2-0, 2.14) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers.  Fernando Sanchez (0-2, 18.00) is set to start for the TinCaps.  Game time is 6:05pm CDT.

Gamblers elevate McCadden to head coach

The new head coach and general manager for the Green Bay Gamblers is a familiar face from behind the bench and on the ice.

During a press conference on Wednesday, Pat McCadden was introduced as Mike Leone's replacement. Leone left the organization earlier this month to become the new head coach of the Rochester Americans. McCadden has been with the Gamblers for two seasons as Leone's assistant. He also lifted the Clark Cup as a player on the Gamblers in 2010.

The announcement came a day after the Gamblers announced their home schedule for the 2024-2025 season. Their first game at the Resch Center is set for October 4th against Omaha.

Board Passes Numerous Committee Action Items at June Meeting

The Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association Board of Control reviewed and acted on several committees’ recommendations impacting season regulations and membership policies at its June meeting today.

Four basketball coaches’ recommendations were approved by the Board. Three of those impact the electronic seeding criteria used for the basketball Tournament Series, effective next season. The first is an amended recommendation that eliminates any forfeited games from being factored into a team’s win percentage. In addition, results versus bordering states of Illinois, Iowa, Michigan and Minnesota will factor in a team’s win percentage and its opponent’s win percentage. Results versus non-bordering states will impact the formula only for a team’s own win percentage. Furthermore, head-to-head results will be introduced into the criteria under two circumstances. The first is when two or more consecutive seeds have a final seeding calculation within a predetermined threshold, they will be considered a virtual tie with a tie-breaker protocol to be applied. The second continues the use of head-to-head results of consecutive seeds to determine the home team in the first-round games for both teams.

The other basketball recommendation passed addresses language in season regulations regarding the 3-Point Challenge. The new threshold increases the required minimum number of attempts from 75 to 100 during the regular season to be eligible for the Challenge.

There were nine wrestling coaches’ recommendations voted into the season regulations by the Board. Four of those address the Tournament Series for girls only. Beginning in 2026-27, the WIAA will implement a State Girls Wrestling Team Tournament. The Board also approved recognition of a girls’ team champion beginning in 2024-25, determined by point values awarded for results at the State Individual Wrestling Tournament until the team tournament is sponsored in 2026-27. In addition, during the 2024-25 season, the girls’ tournament will expand to 16 regionals for participants in girls’ wrestling programs, which will advance four girls to eight sectionals and then two girls from sectionals to the State Tournament. The Board also supported a mandate that requires a sponsored girls’ school program to only wrestle against other schools that sponsor a girls’ wrestling program, starting in 2025-26. Furthermore, eligibility for the State Girls’ Wrestling Tournament will only be afforded to wrestlers participating in sponsored girls’ wrestling programs.

Two of the wrestling rules passed impact the State Individual Tournament schedule. The Thursday afternoon session will begin one hour earlier, which allows for a two-match minimum for each participant in lieu of a true third- and fifth-place match. Also, all matches through the quarterfinals in all divisions will be completed on Thursday.

Two more wrestling recommendations approved by the Board involves tournament seeding. Beginning next season, coaches will be required to enter all results of team and individual competition in a WIAA-preferred database within seven days following completion of the competition. The other seeding component passed into the season regulations establishes a 10-match minimum for consideration of a seed point when comparing winning percentages for the State Team Wrestling Tournament seeding.

The final wrestling recommendation approved strikes a WIAA adaptation to the NFHS?rules that, as a result, will permit any authorized person to supervise weigh-ins, not just licensed officials.

There were two changes to the gymnastics Tournament Procedures approved by the Board to be implemented in 2024-25. The first outlines a protocol and schedule for setting up a Tournament Series meet using an event management system of a designated platform partner. The second is an amended recommendation that prohibits a school-approved uniform from displaying club logos, club mascots or club names.

A pair of Sports Medical Advisory Committee recommendations received Board support. The first adds a WIAA-licensed official liaison to the committee beginning in 2024-25. The other is an amended proposal that requires schools to conduct a pre-contest meeting to discuss the Emergency Action Plan before interscholastic events that may include event management, officials and medical personnel.

The Board also approved a number of changes requested by the Conference Realignment Task Force, effective in 2024-25. The conference realignment process for the sport of lacrosse, a sport sponsored for the first time in 2023-24, will coincide with the football-only procedure this fall. A second request passed permits applicants to submit up to two different solutions. A third recommendation supported by the Board is the establishment of a second virtual appeal meeting to the Task Force in February prior to the March Board meeting for schools newly impacted by additional changes to realignment plans. The fourth change regarding the Task Force removes the requirement of six-team paired conferences or leagues with more than seven schools for non-football conference realignment solutions. Instead, the action makes six-team paired conferences or leagues with more than seven schools a recommendation.

In other action taken by the Board, two fast-track conference realignment plans received approval, including one that places University School of Milwaukee in the Woodland Conference from an independent status for girls’ golf only in the fall of 2024. The other moves Clear Lake into the Dunn-St. Croix Conference from the Lakeland Conference for all sports except football, effective in the fall of 2025.

The Board also approved a spending resolution to continue spending until the 2024-25 budget is approved, winter season sports financial statements, the 2024 Annual Meeting minutes, and the general fund financial statements and payments for May.

Meeting topic discussions and reports included the recently completed spring sports tournaments; 2025 Annual Meeting dates and venue planning; newly approved constitutional amendments; June Jam and Summer Slam events; powers and duties of Board of Control and Advisory Council; and a reminder of the New Athletic Directors’ Workshop on July 22.

The Board also received liaison reports from Paul Manriquez of the Department of Public Instruction, Dan Rossmiller of the Wisconsin Association of School Boards and Eric Plitzuweit of the Wisconsin Athletic Directors Association.

The WIAA, as defined by its Constitution, is a voluntary, unincorporated, and nonprofit organization. The membership oversees interscholastic athletic programs for 513 senior high schools and 45 junior high/middle level schools in its membership.

Rattlers win third straight with 4-1 decision over Fort Wayne

Mark Manfredi had another solid performance on the mound and Matt Wood continued his hot hitting to lead the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers to a 4-1 win over the Fort Wayne TinCaps Tuesday night at Parkview Field.

Wood, who had four hits and three RBI in Sunday’s division-clinching game at West Michigan, gave Wisconsin the lead when he lined a two-out, solo home run to right in the top of the fourth inning.  Wood has four home runs this season.

The Timber Rattlers (41-23) struck again with two outs in the fifth inning.  Jadher Areinamo launched his fourth home run of the season deep to left-center for a 2-0 lead.  Luis Lara followed with a double to right.  Luke Adams drove in Lara with a single for a 3-0 lead.

Adams stole second, his fifteenth stolen base of the season, to get into scoring position.  Wood obliged Adams with an RBI single to center for a 4-0 advantage.

The TinCaps (27-37) got on the scoreboard in the sixth inning and threatened for more.  Joshua Mears hit a lead-off home run against Wisconsin starting pitcher Mark Manfredi.  Fort Wayne got a walk and a single with one out to bring the tying run to the plate.  Manfredi got the second out with his fourth strikeout of the game.  Then, Stiven Cruz was called in from the bullpen to get the final out of the sixth.

Cruz ramped up the degree of difficulty by walking the first batter he faced to load the bases before getting a strikeout to end the frame.

Yerlin Rodriguez pitched into and out of trouble in the seventh and eighth innings but worked through two scoreless framed to maintain the lead.

Will Childers tossed a perfect bottom of the ninth with a pair of strikeouts to close out the game and earn his third save of the season.

Wood is 6-for-9 with five RBI in his last two games.  Manfredi set a new professional single-game high for innings pitched as he allowed one run on four hits over 5-2/3 innings.  Manfredi won his third straight decision.

Game two of the series is Wednesday night at Parkview Field.  Tate Kuehner (2-1, 3.40) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers.  Fort Wayne’s scheduled starting pitcher is Yu Darvish, who is making a rehabilitation start for the San Diego Padres.  Game time is 6:05pm CDT.

Brewers hang on for win over Angels

The Milwaukee Brewers got a game-ending catch from Sal Frelick that prevented a three-run tying home run in the ninth innings to escape with a 6-3 win over the  Los Angeles Anaheim Angels Tuesday night.

The Brewers were cruising with a 6-0 lead going into the ninth inning thanks to a strong start by Tobias Meyer, who pitched 6.1 innings of shutout baseball, allowing only four hits while striking out six.

Christian Yelich started the Brewers off with a solo home run in the first inning, marking the 200th homer of his career.  In the fourth inning, Jackson Chourio hit a double that scored two runners and himself after an error in right field allowed him to circle the bases, giving the Brewers a 5-0 lead.

Milwaukee tacked on one more run in the sixth before things got interesting in the ninth inning.

After Elieser Hernandez came in to pitch for the Brewers, he managed only one out while giving up two runs.  Joel Payamps could not put out the fire as he allowed two hits and a walk in 1/3 of an inning.  Closer Trevor Megill then picked up his 14th save of the season with a dramatic ending.

Frelick made a leaping, game-ending catch to rob Taylor Ward of a potential three-run home run and denied the Angels a huge comeback in the bottom of the ninth.

Milwaukee (43-30), who lead the NL Central by 6.5 games, and the Angels will play the third game in the series tonight starting at 8:38 p.m.

Rockers fall to Dock Spiders in extra innings

The Green Bay Rockers lost a nail-biter to the Fond du Lac Dock Spiders 9-8 in extra innings Tuesday night.  The Rockers fell behind 4-0 before rallying with five runs to take a 5-4 lead in the bottom of the fifth inning. After the Dock Spiders tied the game at five and later took the lead, the Rockers responded with Pinch runner Taylor Shultz scoring the go-ahead run on a Luke Moeller sac fly to make the score 8-7.  Fond du Lac tied it up in the ninth and forced extra frames.

The Rockers will face off with the Dock Spiders again Wednesday on the road with Quinn Saunders set to start for Green Bay (7-13) with a 6:35 p.m. first pitch.

Gibraltar/Washington Island's Kita leads local players on All-District Team

Gibraltar/Washington Island's Brady Kita headlines a list of players honored by the Wisconsin Baseball Coaches Association earlier this month.

Kita was named the All-Northeast District Player of the Year for Division 4 as the Vikings' starting catcher. The Vikings' Aaron Brey and Algoma's Parker Lischka and Charlie Prokash were also recognized by the WBCA as honorable mention members.

Algoma's Grant Vandervest and Southern Door's Braylon Berg received special recognition for being academic all-district.

Luxemburg-Casco to celebrate century of wrestling

The Luxemburg-Casco community will hold a special celebration this August to honor one of its most successful high school sports programs.

According to its website, George Gregor ran the program from 1924 to 1949, producing one state champion along the way.  Frank Chalupa took the program's reins in 1950, compiling a 224-46-5 dual meet record thanks to coaching 68 state qualifiers, 16 state place winners, and two state champions. In 1974, Emil Kuhn only led the Spartans to even more success in his quarter century of coaching, leading the Spartans to a 318-55-2 dual meet record and Team State championships in 1992, 1994, 1996, and 1999.  Kuhn mentored 77 state qualifiers, 61 state place winners, and nine state champions under Kuhn.

The Team State dynasty picked up steam under Bob Berceau, who led the Spartans to titles in 2001, 2002, 2003, 2005, 2006, 2012, and 2013. Chas Treml took the torch from his old coach, guiding the Spartans to state championships in 2018, 2023, and 2024.

Food, beverages, live music, and other activities will be a part of the celebration, which will take place on August 24th from 2 p.m. to 11 p.m. at the Kewaunee County Fairgrounds. You can learn more about the event here.

Hunt Named Midwest League Pitcher of the Week

K.C. Hunt has a little more to celebrate today.  The right-hander was awarded the Midwest League’s Pitcher of the Week by Minor League Baseball one day after the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers clinched the first half West Division Title.  Hunt is the first Wisconsin pitcher and third Rattlers player to win a weekly award this season.

Hunt, a non-drafted free agent signed by the Milwaukee Brewers in 2023, was the starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers on June 13 at West Michigan.  He went six scoreless innings, allowed one hit, walked one, and struck out eight.  Hunt set a new single-game high for innings pitched as a professional.  He also matched his pro single-game high for strikeouts with his performance.

The former Mississippi State University Bulldog is 2-0 with a 2.14 ERA in five games – two starts – for the Timber Rattlers since his promotion from the Carolina Mudcats on May 14.  Hunt has walked two and struck out thirty in 21 innings with Wisconsin.

Shortstop Gregory Barrios and outfielder Eduarqui Fernández were the previous two Rattlers to win weekly Midwest League awards earlier this season.  They won back-to-back Player of the Week Awards in April.

The Timber Rattlers start a road series with the Fort Wayne TinCaps on Tuesday.  The next home series for the newly crowned First Half West Division Champions is June 25 through June 30 against the South Bend Cubs.

DCL Round-up: Sister Bay outlasts Maplewood on 105.1 The GOAT

Mother Nature gave the area's Door County League teams enough time to squeeze in their three games on Sunday.

Strong winds complemented even stronger pitching in Sister Bay's 3-0 win over Maplewood Father's Day afternoon.

The Kolberg Braves rolled on the road Sunday afternoon as they beat the West Jacksonport Ports 14-1.

Washington Island posted their second straight win, beating Baileys Harbor 13-3.

Glory teams lose two of three over the weekend

After a thrilling home win for the women's team on Friday, the Green Bay Glory dropped their two other games on the weekend.

For the men, it was heartbreak at the Banta Bowl on Saturday night when they lost a 2-0 lead and went on to lose 3-2 to division-leading Edgewater Castle.

The women lost their road match at Chicago Kics 3-2. Goalkeeper Isabella Jones scored one goal on a header off a corner kick, and Allison Raasch scored from about 40 yards out for the other tally.

The two teams will play a total of four games this weekend at the Banta Bowl.

Rattlers Clinch Division Title with 8-5 Win over West Michigan

The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers will play in the postseason for the first time since 2016.  The Timber Rattlers have a date in the playoffs after an 8-5 win over the West Michigan Whitecaps Sunday afternoon at LMCU Ballpark clinched a First Half Western Division title.  Jheremy Vargas had a three-run homer and Matt Wood went 4-for-5 with three RBI to lead the Rattlers offense to the win.

Wood started the Wisconsin (40-23) rally in the second inning with a single.  Jesús Chirinos followed with a double on a 3-0 pitch to drive in Wood for a 1-0 lead.  Eduarqui Fernández singled to center to put runners at the corners.  Vargas cleared the bases when his drive to left cleared the wall for his fourth home run of the season and a 4-0 lead.

The Timber Rattlers poured on the offense later in the inning with a two-out rally.  Luis Lara singled and stole second.  Luke Adams drove in Lara with a single.  Wood collected his second hit of the inning with a single that sent Adams across the plate for a 6-0 lead.

Wood added to the lead again with a two-out, two-run single in the fourth inning for an 8-0 advantage.

Alexander Cornielle, the Timber Rattlers starting pitcher, went four scoreless innings, allowed two hits, and struck out three.  He had been activated from the injured list before the game and was making his first start since June 2.  He left after 40 pitches with that 8-0 lead.

West Michigan (31-32) stormed back in the bottom of the fifth.  Reliever Brian Fitzpatrick got the first out before allowing a single and a two-run home run to Danny Serretti.  Fitzpatrick got the second out before walking the next two batters.  Dom Johnson drove in the third run of the inning with a double to left.  That was the end of the line for Fitzpatrick.

Aaron Rund was called into the game from the Wisconsin bullpen to get the final out and he appeared to get it when Roberto Campos hit a grounder to Adams at first base.  Rund was over to cover and take the throw in plenty of time, but he dropped the ball for an error and two runs scored to cut the Rattlers lead to three runs.

Rund settled in after that miscue.  He pitched around a one-out double in the sixth and worked a perfect seventh.  In the eighth, he issued walk a walk with one out and another with two outs to bring Serretti to the plate as the tying run.  Rund got the final out on a flyout to left to maintain the three-run advantage.

Bayden Root was called from the Wisconsin bullpen to close out the game for the bottom of the ninth.  He retired the first two batters.  Seth Stephenson dropped a bunt for a single and wound up on third base after a wild throw.  That meant Johnson would get a shot in the bottom of the ninth.  The shot fell short as Johnson sent a routine fly ball to Fernández, who squeezed it for the final out as players poured from the third base dugout to mob Root and celebrate.

The Timber Rattlers have won their first division title since 2012, when they won the first half division title and would go on to win the Midwest League Championship season.  Wisconsin qualified for the playoffs in 2014 and in 2016 as a second half Wild Card.

The Timber Rattlers are off on Monday.  They return to action on Tuesday at Parkview Field with the first game of a series with the Fort Wayne TinCaps.  Mark Manfredi (3-1, 3.43) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers.  Game time is 6:05pm CDT.

Rockers' luck falls short against Leprechauns

A five-run spurt at the end of Sunday's game as the Green Bay Rockers fell to Royal Oak 8-5 in Ashwaubenon.

The Leprechauns jumped out to a 7-0 lead before the Rockers finally got on the board in the fifth inning when Peyton Mansfield drove in two runs with a single. They would get closer in the seventh with a sacrifice fly and an error, bringing home another two runs. The Rockers added one more in the eighth, but the Leprechauns add their own in the ninth to put the game out of reach. Lane Allen and Jake Bold's double were the only extra-base hits registered by the Rockers in the loss. Jagger Edwards' rocky start tagged him for the defeat, failing to go five innings while giving up four runs (4 ER) on five hits.

Maplewood looks to bounce back against Sister Bay on 105.1 The GOAT

The Maplewood Mets look to bring the Sister Bay Bays down to their level in the Door County League standings on Sunday when they come the league leaders to town.

Maplewood's perfect start concluded last Sunday with a 13-8 loss to Egg Harbor. After losing their slim advantage early, the Mets retook the lead in the bottom of the inning when Jaden Diller and Gutschow went back to back with home runs to make it 3-2. The Mets would tack on one more in the frame to give themselves a two-run cushion. The Mets carried a 5-2 advantage halfway through the game before the Indians barraged the Mets with 11 runs combined in the sixth and seventh innings. The offensive highlights in those innings included a Riley Spetz two-run homer in the sixth and a three-run dinger from Cody Giesseman in the seventh. Tory Jandrin's home run for the Mets was lost in the Indians' offensive push.

In their last game, the Bays jumped out to a 6-0 lead after three innings and never looked back in an 8-1 win Sunday over Institute. Spencer Krause singled in the game's first run in the opening frame before a fielder's choice and an error brought home two more runs in the second. Sawyer Johnson doubled home one run, and Alex Laughlin singled in another two to make it 6-0. Krause scored the game's final run in the eighth inning when he stole third base and took home on a wild pitch. Sam Lindenberg earned the win, allowing one run on one hit while striking out two. Laughlin, Stewart Larsen, Krause, and Lindenberg all posted at least two hits in the game.

Bryan Mazur and Shelly Lau will have the call on 105.1 The GOAT, 1051TheGOAT.com, and NEWRadioSportsNetwork.com beginning at 1:15 p.m. with the pregame show followed by the first pitch at 1:30 p.m. weather permitting.

Big innings help Indians past Cubs on 105.1 The GOAT

For the second straight week, Egg Harbor hung up crooked numbers on the scoreboard in the middle of its game Friday night, taking 17-4 win over Institute Friday night.

The Indians struck first in the second inning when Anthony Jennerjohn's groundout brought home Brady Kita to make it 1-0. The Cubs would take the lead from the Indians in the bottom half of the frame when Will Hartman singled home two runs to make it 2-1.

The Indians would pile up runs in the middle innings, scoring 12 times between the fourth and sixth innings. That included a seven-run sixth that put the game in danger of ending early the rest of the night. Riley Spetz, Nick Kita, and Eric Dejardine reached base multiple times during the scoring spree as they combined for five RBIs in the stint. Kita delivered one of the game's biggest blows with a double in the sixth inning.

The Cubs did not go away with quietly with Robby Pollman driving in a run in the fifth inning and Josh Pflieger being at the plate when Frankie Ash took home on a passed ball. Drew Price and Jace Johnson would combine to sit down the last seven batters for the Cubs while the Indians tacked on another four runs in the eighth to put the game away early.

The Indians outhit the Cubs 16-6 in the game while nine different players (Dejardine, Isaac Berkley, Nick Kita, Brady Kita, Price, Alex Byrne, Cole Krause, Jennerjohn) all driving in at least one run.  Joe Sawyer captured the win for the Indians, allowing four runs (2 ER) on six hits across 5 1/3 innings.

Blizzard club Sharks in playoff clincher

The Green Bay Blizzard ended their playoff drought on Friday night, posting a 63-35 win over the Jacksonville Sharks in their home finale.

The Blizzard outscored the Sharks by seven points in every quarter, including a flurry of action in the fourth that resulted in 35 total points. The team posted two separate times when they went on 21-0 runs that put the Sharks' hopes out of reach. Max Meylor was an efficient 15-19 for 157 yards and four touchdowns while spreading the ball out to four receivers, three of which had at least four catches and one touchdown.

The Blizzard will now spend the rest of the regular season on the road before they learn if they hold a playoff game later this summer.

Glory women post home win

The Green Bay Glory's return to Capital Credit Union Park was greeted warmly, and the fans were treated to a 1-0 win over Chicago House AC on Friday night.

Brianna Morrissey registered the goal for the Glory, and Claire Bradford picked up the assist. It was the second win this season for the Glory over Chicago House.

Whitecaps Win Late Over Wisconsin

The West Michigan Whitecaps broke a 2-2 tie with a run in the bottom of the eighth inning to beat the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers 3-2 on Friday night at LMCU Ballpark in a game that took under two hours to play.  Both teams have won two games in the series.  Despite the loss, Wisconsin’s march to a division title was only put on pause instead of taking a step back.

The Whitecaps (31-30) took the lead with a run in the bottom of the first inning without a hit.  Wisconsin starting pitcher Will Rudy hit lead-off batter Seth Stephenson, who promptly stole second base.  Max Anderson got Stephenson to third with a flyout to right.  Roberto Campos drove in Stephenson with a sacrifice fly to left for the 1-0 lead.

Wisconsin (38-23) responded with two runs in the top of the second inning.  Jesús Chirinos and Tayden Hall walked with one out.  Eduarqui Fernández sent a slow grounder to second.  Anderson fielded the ball and tagged Hall, but his throw to first was wild to allow Chirinos to score and Fernández to take second base.  Terence Doston put the Rattlers in the lead with a single to center to knock in Fernández.

Rudy retired thirteen West Michigan hitters in a row after the hit batsman.  He would pitch five innings, allow one hit, and strike out five without issuing a walk.

West Michigan tied the game in the bottom of the sixth against reliever Patricio Aquino.  The first two batters – Jim Jarvis and Stephenson – reached on singles.  Anderson sent a fly ball to right to advance Jarvis from second to third. Then, Stephenson stole second.  Campos grounded out to third with the only play to first and Jarvis scored the tying run.

Jarvis started the rally that put the Whitecaps in the lead in the eighth inning with another lead-off single.  Anderson lined a double to the corner in right with one out and Jarvis raced home with the run to put West Michigan up 3-2.

In the top of the ninth, Max Alba retired the Timber Rattlers in order for his second save.  The game was played in one hour and fifty-four minutes.

Wisconsin’s magic number went down despite the loss.  The Cedar Rapids Kernels lost 4-1 at Lansing on Friday night to lower the Rattlers magic number to two.  Any combination of two Wisconsin wins or two Cedar Rapids losses over the final five games of the first half will clinch the first playoff berth for the Timber Rattlers since 2016.

The Whitecaps host the game five of the series at LMCU Ballpark on Saturday night.  Yujanyer Herrera (3-1, 4.62) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers.  West Michigan has named Jaden Hamm (1-1, 2.17) as their starter.  Game time is 5:35pm CDT.

Earlier this season, the Glory women tipped Chicago House AC on the road 2-1.

Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.

Wisconsin Hunting Down a Playoff Spot

The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers took a huge step towards their first playoff berth since 2016 behind an outstanding pitching performance from K.C and offensive production from the heart of the lineup. The Rattlers collected a 6-1 victory over the West Michigan Whitecaps at LMCU Ballpark on Thursday Night.  Wisconsin’s win was coupled with a loss by the Cedar Rapids Kernels to lower the Rattlers magic number to three.

Wisconsin (38-22) scored twice with two outs in the top of the first inning.  Luke Adams started the rally with a double.  Dylan O’Rae knocked in Adams with a single to left.  Jadher Areinamo made it 2-0 with a double to deep left-center to drive O’Rae home.

The only hit allowed by Hunt was a two-out, infield single in the second inning.  He struck out eight and walked one over six scoreless innings.  In his last two starts, Hunt has gone eleven innings, allowed four hits, walked one, and struck out thirteen.

West Michigan’s only threat to score against Hunt came in the fourth inning.  Jim Jarvis walked to start the inning, moved to second on a ground out, and took third on a wild pitch.  Hunt struck out the next two batters to leave Jarvis standing on third base.

The Timber Rattlers added four insurance runs in the top of the eighth inning with the trio of Adams, O’Rae, and Areinamo starting the rally again.  Adams walked, stole second, and went to third on an error.  Then, O’Rae walked and stole second.  Areinamo was ahead in the count 3-0 when he lost track of the pitch timer and had an automatic strike called on him and swung and missed at the next pitch.  Areinamo was ready and didn’t miss the next pitch as he line a single to center to score Adams and O’Rae for a 4-0 lead.

Jesús Chirinos capped the scoring with what a home run that cleared the hitting background in center.  The given distance on the home run tracker was 386’, but with the fence 402’ from home plate and the hitting background approximately 32’ hit, that distance was dismissed as incorrect.  Lew Chamberlin, the managing partner and CEO of the Whitecaps, commented that the homer by Chirinos was the longest homer he has seen at LMCU ballpark since it opened in 1994.

Wisconsin relievers Bayden Root and Chase Costello picked up for Hunt with two scoreless innings.  Root gave up a lead-off single before retiring the next three batters in the seventh.  Costello struck out the side in order in the bottom of the eighth.

The Whitecaps (30-30) got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the ninth on a two-out, infield single by Luke Gold against Tyler Wehrle.  West Michigan loaded the bases with two outs before Wehrle ended the game with a strikeout, the fourteenth by Wisconsin pitching in the game.

The Lansing Lugnuts helped the Timber Rattlers out in their quest for the postseason.  Three Lugnuts pitchers combined on a no-hitter to beat Cedar Rapids 8-0 in Lansing on Thursday night.  Wisconsin has a 3-1/2 game lead over the Kernels in the West Division with six games remaining in the first half.

Game four of the series is Thursday night at LMCU Ballpark.  Will Rudy (1-5, 6.31) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers.  West Michigan has named Carlos Marcano (1-4, 3.92) as their starter.  Game time is 5:35pm CDT.

Cubs welcome Indians to Institute on 105.1 The GOAT

The Institute Cubs will look for the first win of the season on Friday night when they play at home under the lights against the Egg Harbor Indians.

The Indians barraged the Mets with 11 runs combined in the sixth and seventh innings as they went on to win 13-8 against Maplewood. The offensive highlights in those innings included a Riley Spetz two-run homer in the sixth and a three-run dinger from Cody Giesseman in the seventh.

The Cubs fell to the Sister Bay Bays 8-1 in their last matchup. The score would be 7-0 before the Cubs got on the board, with Jaeger Brusky driving in a run on a double play in the sixth inning. Frankie Ash, Kyle Ploor, and Josh Pflieger registered hits for the Cubs.

Blizzard conclude home slate with Sharks

The Green Bay Blizzard will see the home portion of their 2024 slate come to a close Friday night when they host the Jacksonville Sharks at the Resch Center.

The Blizzard won their fifth straight last weekend when Andrew Mevis connected on his second field goal of the quarter as time expired to tip the host Massachusetts Pirates 36-33. Max Meylor threw for 157 yards and two scores, and EJ Burgess rushed for another in the Blizzard win.

Rockers win fourth straight

The Green Bay Rockers got another step closer to a .500 record on the season with a 7-5 win over the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters on Wednesday night.

After allowing the Rafters to take an early 1-0 lead, the Rockers scored six of the game's next nine runs en route to the victory. The difference in the result occurred in the fourth inning when Payton Mansfield produced a run on a fielder's choice and Cooper Kelly singled in another run. The two teams would trade runs the rest of the game.

Nick Harms led the way with three hits while Mansfield, Kelly, and Sam Miller all had two hits in the win. Six players had at least one RBI for the Rockers, led by Miller who had two.

Kyle Dobyns picked up the win for the Rockers, but it was Mack Crowley who had the most impressive outing, allowing just one run on two hits while striking out six across 3 2/3 innings.

Walks to Whitecaps Hurt Rattlers in West Michigan

The West Michigan Whitecaps ended the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers three-game winning streak with a 4-1 victory at LMCU Ballpark on Wednesday night.  The Rattlers held a slim 1-0 lead but walks to West Michigan lead-off hitters in the bottom of the fifth, seventh, and eighth innings came around to score to cost the Timber Rattlers a chance to lower their magic number to clinch their first playoff spot since 2016.

Tayden Hall put together a two-out rally in the top of the second inning to give the Timber Rattlers (37-22) the lead.  Hall lined a hit softly down the line in left and stretched the single into a double just ahead of the throw from Seth Stephenson.  Hall raced for third on a ball that popped away from catcher Stephen Scott.  The throw to third by Scott was into left field and Hall scored without a play for the 1-0 lead.

Wisconsin had runners at second and third with one out after Hall walked and Eduarqui Fernández doubled in the top of the fifth.  The Whitecaps (30-29) brought the infield in with Jheremy Vargas at the plate and the strategy worked for them.  Vargas hit a chopper up the middle and shortstop Peyton Graham grabbed the ball and caught Hall between third and home for the second out.  The Rattlers still had runners on the corners, but the game turned on the first of two big plays by Whitecaps third baseman Danny Serretti in the inning.

Luis Lara hit a hard grounder down the third base line and appeared to give Wisconsin some insurance.  It was not to be as Serretti made a diving stop near the base and fired to first to get Lara for the final out to keep the Rattlers lead at one run.

In the bottom of the fifth, Wisconsin starting pitcher Tate Kuehner walked Luke Gold to start the inning.  Gold tagged on a deep fly to center to advance to second base.  Serretti followed with an RBI single to left to knock in Gold to even the score.

Kuehner allowed one run on two hits with two walks and five strikeouts over 5-2/3 innings for a no decision.

Gold started the rally that gave the Whitecaps the lead in the bottom of the seventh inning when reliever Aaron Rund walked him.  Rund also walked Peyton Graham to put two on with no outs.  Serretti grounded into a force out at second to give the Whitecaps runners at the corners.

Dom Johnson drove in Gold with a deep sacrifice fly to center and the Whitecaps were up 2-1.

The Timber Rattlers threatened to tie the game in the top of the eighth inning against Michael Bienlien, who had allowed one run in 23-2/3 innings in fourteen appearances before Wednesday night.  Lara singled with one out but was erased on a force play on a grounder off the bat of Dylan O’Rae.  Bienlien walked Jadher Areinamo to put two runners on base for Luke Adams.  The count went full before Bienlien got the strikeout to end the threat.

Another lead-off walk in the bottom of the eighth inning cost Wisconsin reliever Yerlin Rodriguez as he issued a free pass to Seth Stephenson on four pitches.  Roberto Campos had a one-out single to left with Stephenson running on the play.  The throw from Vargas went to third base and that allowed Campos to take second base.

Wisconsin brought their infield in for Scott, the next batter.  Scott hit a hard grounder to third.  Adams made a diving stop but threw wildly to the plate to allow Stephenson to score.  A sacrifice fly by Gold knocked in the final run of the inning.  Then, Bienlien pitched a perfect ninth inning to close out the Timber Rattlers.

In the first-half West Division playoff race, Wisconsin’s magic number stayed at five as their lead over the Cedar Rapids Kernels shrank to 2-1/2 games with seven games remaining.  The Kernels won their third straight game with a 7-3 win at Lansing on Wednesday night.

Game three of the series is Thursday night.  Wisconsin has named K.C. Hunt (1-0, 3.00) as their starting pitcher.  Joe Miller 0-0, 2.60) is set to start for the Whitecaps.  Game time at LMCU Ballpark is 5:35pm CDT.

Green Bay listed as candidate city for 2026 World Cup training base

Green Bay could be the home site for one of the teams competing in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The city joins nine others that could host an international team for their base camp despite not being a host for actual games. According to FIFA, the list of potential team base camps will grow, with further options across Canada, Mexico and the USA to be added. “Even if a city is not staging matches, a participating team coming to stay creates a strong personal bond with the competition for people locally. It will see them adopt their guests as a second team during the tournament, thereby connecting even more people to the FIFA World Cup,” said Heimo Schirgi, Chief Operating Officer World Cup.

If selected, the to-be-determined team would train at Lambeau Field and stay across the street at Lodge Kohler. It would be a haul for any team to travel from Green Bay to one of the host cities. Toronto and Kansas City are the closest at 432 miles and 504 miles respectively.

Rockers sink Rafters

The Green Bay Rockers jumped off to a 3-0 lead after one inning and cruised to a 6-3 win over the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters on Tuesday night at Capital Credit Union Field.   Mikel Howell got the win for the Rockers, and Sam Miller went three-for-four from the plate, including two home runs and four RBIs.  Allen Lane went three-for-three with a run and one RBI to complement the offensive attack for the Rockers.

Henry Chabot picked up the save while striking out two in the ninth inning as the Rockers kept up their strong play on the diamond.

Green Bay (5-9) has won three in a row and will play the Rafters in Wisconsin Rapids tonight starting at 6:35 p.m.

Brewers shutout by Bluejays

The Milwaukee Brewers let numerous opportunities slip past them Tuesday evening as they fell to the Toronto Blue Jays 3-0 at American Family Field.

Rookie pitcher Carlos Rodriguez (0-1) made his Major League debut for the Brewers and went 3 2/3 innings giving up two runs on seven hits.

The Brewers squandered early chances, leaving seven men on base in the first three innings and went 0-12 with runners in scoring position for the game.   Toronto on the other hand were five for 12 with RISP.

Blake Perkins had two hits for Milwaukee as Toronto starter Yusei Kikuchi (4-5) got the win throwing five scoreless innings allowing three hits and four walks while striking out five.

Milwaukee (39-28) and Toronto (33-34) will wrap up the three game series this afternoon with a 1:10 p.m. start.  Tobias Myers (2-2) will get the start for the Brewers while Chris Bassitt (6-6) will be on the mound for the Blue Jays.

Timber Rattlers top West Michigan, magic number is five

The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers opened their twelve-game road trip with a solid 5-2 victory over the West Michigan Whitecaps at LMCU Ballpark on Tuesday night.  Wisconsin lowered their magic number for clinching the team’s first playoff spot since 2016 to five with the win thanks to a mixture of clutch pitching, big hits, and solid defense.

West Michigan (29-29) loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the second inning on a single and back-to-back walks.  Rattlers starting pitcher Mark Manfredi escaped the inning with a force play at second to keep the game scoreless.

The game was not scoreless long after that.  Eduarqui Fernández launched a lead-off home run to left-center to start the third inning and the Rattlers were in front.  Fernández has five homers for the Timber Rattlers this season.

They were not in front for long.  Seth Stephenson reached on a bunt single, stole second, and went to third on an error to start the inning.  Manfredi hit the next batter to put runners on the corners.  Max Anderson tied the game with a sacrifice fly.

Wisconsin manager Victor Estevez was ejected moments later after a dispute over whether Manfredi had hit Stephen Scott or the knob of Scott’s bat.  The umpires rule a hit batsman.  Estevez disagreed and was ejected from the game by plate umpire Brandon Schmitt.  Manfredi was able to get out of the inning by retiring the next two batters.

The Timber Rattlers (37-21) went back in front in the top of the fourth.  Luke Adams lined a homer to deep center.  His fifth homer of the season gave Wisconsin a 2-1 lead.

Whitecaps reliever Erick Pinales walked the first three Wisconsin batters he faced in the top of the fifth inning.  Jadher Areinamo drove in one run with a fielder’s choice.  Pinales balked in the second run of the inning for a 4-1 advantage.

Manfredi settled in and worked around a two-out single in the fourth and a one-out triple in the fifth to keep the Whitecaps off the scoreboard.  That put him in line for his third win of the season

Reliever Stiven Cruz allowed the first two Whitecaps to reach on a walk and a single in bottom of the sixth.  However, he got a 5-4-3 double play and a strikeout to end the inning.

Cruz was not as fortunate in the seventh, but he – and the Rattlers still got a huge break thanks to the arm of Fernández in right.  Stephenson walked on four pitches and stole second again to start the inning.  Danny Serretti singled to right to drive in Stephenson.  Serretti decided to go for a double.  He lost his gamble as Fernández threw to Areinamo covering second base and Serretti was out.  Instead of the tying run at the plate with no outs for the Whitecaps, they had none on with one out.  That opening allowed Cruz to navigate the inning with no more damage on a foul pop and a grounder to short.

The Rattlers added an insurance run in the top of the eighth inning.  Adams tripled to start the frame.  Matt Wood drove in Adams with a single and the Rattlers were up 5-2.

That was more than enough for Will Childers, who rejoined the Rattlers from Biloxi earlier in the day, to close out the game.  Childers walked two over two scoreless, hitless innings for his second save of the season with Wisconsin.

Adams is on a six-game hitting streak.  Dylan O’Rae had a single and walked twice to extend his own hitting streak to six games and his on-base streak to 22 games.

In the first-half West Division playoff race, Wisconsin maintained their 3-1/2 game lead over the second place Cedar Rapids Kernels.  Cedar Rapids won 15-7 at Lansing on Tuesday night.  There are eight games remaining in the first half.

Game two of the series is Wednesday evening at LMCU Ballpark.  Tate Kuehner (2-1, 3.71) is the scheduled starting pitcher for Wisconsin.  The Whitecaps have named Colin Fields (1-3, 3.55) as their starter.  Game time is 5:35pm CDT.

Cardiac Rattlers Score Four in Ninth to Beat Quad Cities

The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers went into the top of the ninth protecting a 2-1 lead.  The Quad Cities River Bandits went into the bottom of the ninth protecting a 5-2 lead.  In a crazy, back-and-forth ninth inning on Sunday afternoon at Neuroscience Group Field, it was the Rattlers who came out with a 6-5 victory as a four-run bottom of the ninth gave them the victory and lowered their magic number to clinch the division to six.

Wisconsin (36-21) took the lead with a two-out rally in the bottom of the third.  Quad Cities starting pitcher Ryan Ramsey retired the first two batters before walking Jadher Areinamo and Luke Adams.  Dylan O’Rae followed with a single to right.  Areinamo scored with a head-first dive to the plate that got him under the tag after a strong throw from Jean Ramirez for the 1-0 lead.

Quad Cities (25-32) threatened in the top of the fourth inning against Wisconsin starter Brian Fitzpatrick.  A hit batsman, a walk, and a single loaded the bases.  Jean Ramirez tried to bunt home the tying run.  Catcher Matt Wood pounce on the ball on the grass in front of the plate and leapt back to tag out the runner heading for home for the second out.  Then, Tayden Hall made a leaping grab at first on a line drive off the bat of Deivis Nadal for the final out.  Ramirez, Wood, and Hall would all play crucial roles later in the drama.

Fitzpatrick pitched a professional high six innings, allowed three hits, and struck out five.  He turned that 1-0 lead over to the bullpen.

Yerlin Rodriguez was up first.  He retired the side in order in the seventh.  However, he would not be as fortunate in the eighth.  Rodriguez walked a batter with one out.  Brett Squires doubled to put runners at second and third.  The next hitter sent a grounder to Luke Adams at third base and the Timber Rattlers got an out at the plate.  Squires took third on the play and scored when Rodriguez uncorked a wild pitch to let in the tying run.

Wood doubled with one out in the bottom of the eighth.  Hall singled to center to drive in Wood to put Wisconsin back in the lead.

Bayden Root entered to close the game in the top of the ninth.  He allowed a walk, a stolen base, and an infield single to put runners at the corners for Ramirez.

Ramirez squared to bunt on the first two pitches but took them for balls.  He squared again on Root’s third pitch before pulling back and punching a double just inside the bag at third to score the tying run.

A grounder to second held the runners as the Rattlers got the first out.  A decision was made to walk Carter Jensen to load the bases.  Dustin Dickerson spoiled that strategy with a single to center to score two runs and the Bandits had a 4-2 lead.

Trevor Werner made it 5-2 with a two-out, RBI single and the River Bandits were three outs from a split in the series.

The Timber Rattlers didn’t quit.  Wisconsin was 8-4 in their last twelve games before Sunday with a pair of walkoff wins and five total last at bat victories.  Even facing Ben Sears, who had only allowed two hits in 4-1/3 innings over four appearances against the Rattlers this season, didn’t faze them.

Luis Lara got the rally started when he was hit by a pitch.  Jadher Areinamo blooped in a single to center on an 0-2 pitch.  Adams drew a four-pitch walk, his fourth walk of the game, to load the bases with no outs.

O’Rae, who had already extended his on-base streak to 21 games with his two singles earlier in the game, lined a single to center to score the first run.

Jesús Chirinos was next for Wisconsin.  Chirinos had a game-winning, three-run homer in the bottom of the ninth inning against the Beloit Sky Carp back on May 18.  He was ready for the big moment again on Sunday.  Sears got ahead of Chirinos 0-2 before the right-hander fouled off a couple of tough pitches and had some good takes to run the count to 3-2.  Chirinos smacked the eighth pitch of the at bat back through the middle to drive in Areinamo and Adams with the tying runs.  O’Rae had stopped at second, but a bobble allowed him to race for third base with the winning run.

The River Bandits chose to bring lefty Chazz Martinez into the game to replace Sears and to walk Wood to load the bases for Hall.

Hall responded with a fly ball to left that was deep enough to easily score O’Rae from third to give the Rattlers a thrilling 6-5 victory.

Wisconsin’s magic number moved to six as their lead remained at 3-1/2 games over the Cedar Rapids Kernels in the first-half West Division race.  The Kernels staged their own late comeback at Great Lakes to earn a 9-6 victory in their series finale at Dow Diamond.  There are nine games remaining in the first half as the Rattlers are trying to make the Midwest League playoffs for the first time since 2016.

Wisconsin is off on Monday.  They begin a twelve-game road trip on Tuesday with game one of a series against the West Michigan Whitecaps at LMCU Ballpark.  Mark Manfredi (2-1, 3.93) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers.  Dylan Smith (0-3, 3.38) has been announced as the starting pitcher for the Whitecaps.  Game time is 5:35pm CDT.

Glory teams split weekend set

The Green Bay Glory soccer teams had a mixed bag of results over the weekend with the men falling short and the women pulling through with a victory.

On Saturday, the Glory men tasted defeat for the first time this season when AFC Roscoe scored the game-winner in the 85th minute to capture the match 2-1.

On Sunday, the Glory women shut out Quad Cities 4-0. Trudy Quidzinski was a pain for the Rush, ending her day with two goals and two assists in the victory. McKayla Legois and Lyssa Mericle scored the other two goals for the Glory.

Rattlers Bounce Back With Big Offensive Night

The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers needed to rebound after a tough offensive night on Friday night as they hosted the Quad Cities River Bandits on Saturday night.  The Rattlers gave the home fans plenty to cheer as they collected a dozen hits in a 9-3 victory over the River Bandits.  The win allowed Wisconsin to move one step closer to their first playoff spot since 2016.

The Timber Rattlers (35-21) scored twice in the bottom of the first inning.  Luis Lara tripled to right-center on the third pitch of the inning.  Dylan O’Rae walked to move his current on-base streak to twenty games.  O’Rae was running on a pitch to Jadher Areinamo, and the pitch went to the backstop.  Lara scored and O’Rae wound up at third base.

The River Bandits (23-31) brought their infield in early and Areinamo hit a grounder to short.  However, the ball was booted and O’Rae scored for a 2-0 lead.

Wisconsin starting pitcher Yujanyer Herrera dealt with lots of traffic on the bases early with a lead-off single to start the game erased on a double play and a single with two walks left stranded in the second.

In the third inning, the River Bandits had two one-out singles, but it looked like Herrera would escape again after getting the second out with a strikeout.  Carson Roccaforte didn’t let the opportunity go to waste for Quad Cities as he lined a double deep to right-center to tie the game 2-2.

The Bandits threatened to take the lead in the top of the fourth as the first two batters singled and were sacrificed into scoring position on a bunt.  Herrera struck out the next batter but walked Carter Jensen to load the bases.  Brett Squires, who has hit four of his nine homers this season against the Timber Rattler, sent a high fly deep to left-center that had the Rattlers holding their breath.  Lara raced over from center and was able to camp under the ball to make a routine catch on the warning track in front of the Quad Cities bullpen.

Tayden Hall put Wisconsin in front when he hammered a 3-1 pitch past the 380’ Landing on the Home Run Porch for his first pro home run.

That shot seemed to wake up the Rattlers bats as a walk and a single set up Jheremy Vargas for a two-run triple.  Lara drove in Vargas with a groundout for a 6-2 lead.

Herrera’s high wire act was not done.  The right-hander went back out for the fifth inning and gave up a double to Kale Emshoff.  Roccaforte and Jared Dickey had consecutive grounders to second to move Emshoff over to third and get him across the plate to cut Wisconsin’s lead to three runs.  Herrera ended his night when he struck out Trevor Werner his 99th pitch of the night just as lightning flashed in the sky and the tarp was placed on the field.

The game restarted after a thirty-seven minute delay.  The Wisconsin offense restarted, too.  Areinamo singled stole second and went to third on a wild pitch.  Jesús Chirinos drove in Areinamo with a sacrifice fly.  Later in the inning Ram?n Rodríguez added an RBI double.

Luke Adams hit a lead-off home run in the bottom of the seventh inning for a 9-3 lead.

Herrera allowed three runs on eight hits and three walks with five strikeouts over five innings to put himself in line for his third win of the season.  There was still work to do and Patricio Aquino did it.  Aquino tossed four scoreless innings, allowed one hit and one walk with four strikeouts to earn his first professional save.

One night after losing 10-1 to the River Bandits and collecting four hits, the Timber Rattlers stormed back with twelve hits as each hitter in the lineup had at least one hit.  Lara, Vargas, and Eduarqui Fernández each had two hits.  O’Rae was 1-for-4 with a walk as he extended his current on-base streak to twenty games.

In the first-half West Division playoff race, Wisconsin picked up a full game on the Cedar Rapids Kernels.  Cedar Rapids lost 11-3 at Great Lakes on Saturday night.  Wisconsin is 3-1/2 games up on the Kernels with ten games remaining in the first half.  That puts Wisconsin’s magic number at seven.

The series finale between Wisconsin and Quad Cities is Sunday afternoon at Neuroscience Group Field.  Brian Fitzpatrick (2-1, 3.55) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers.  The River Bandits have named Ryan Ramsey (0-2, 2.76) as their starter.  Game time is 1:10pm CDT.

Wear Your PFD and a Few Smallmouth Bass Thoughts -- Kayak Fishing Series II

As I write this article today, I’m looking out at Lake Michigan from our cottage in Sturgeon Bay.  It’s foggy with wind and waves.  As I’ve talked about before, even if the water is calm the wind can shift quickly on Green Bay and Lake Michigan.  So, no matter the conditions “wear” your PFD (lifejacket)!

Three years ago, I wrote a Q & A article “The Impact of Fishing for Nesting Smallmouth Bass” with David Philip, PhD, Chair of the Board, Fisheries Conservation Foundation and Emeritus Professor, University of Illinois.  He is the leading researcher on smallmouth bass in North America. That 3,000-word article can be summed up in one sentence. Don’t fish for smallmouth bass while they are guarding nests during the spawning period.  As soon as a male smallmouth bass is taken off a nest, even if it is quickly released, that nest is 50 – 100% lost as within seconds round gobies, which populate our waters, will be in the nest eating eggs and later in the cycle, the fry. Also, some of the released males will simply abandon the nest and being harvested or put in a livewell for a tournament weigh-in miles away eliminates that nest.

Right now, from Little Sturgeon Bay to the tip of Door County on both the lake and Green Bay the spawn is happening. I was out yesterday north on a weekday and still saw several boats trying to catch smallies off nests.  And, on the weekends it’s nest fishing on steroids.  Our once top smallmouth bass fishery gets a tremendous amount of pressure, so if you care about our fishery, don’t nest fish.

Door County residents are as environmentally aware as any in Wisconsin.  I do feel if our people knew the damage nest fishing causes, they would want to see more closed areas during the spawn, like the Mink River and Washington Island.  If any of you would like a copy of my article with Dr. Philipps, please email me at kayakfishingwisconsin@gmail.com.

Islanders, Ports meet Sunday on 105.1 The GOAT

Washington Island and West Jacksonport are both trying not to sink further in the Door County League standings when they meet each other on Sunday.

The Islanders are a surprising 0-4 on the season after reaching the DCL playoff championship game each of the last two seasons. After getting blown out in the league opener at Sister Bay, the Island have lost their last three games by a total of four runs. That includes letting one slip away in Kolberg last Sunday when the Islanders lost to the Braves 8-7. Caleb Cornell set the table for the Islanders as he went 3-5 with two RBI from the lead-off spot. Matt Foss also had two RBI days, while Ray MacDonald and Ben Geiger each drove in one run.

The Ports have lost three straight since their opening weekend win over Institute. Their last two losses have been by one run, including a walk-off defeat at the hands of Baileys Harbor last Friday night.

Jacob Nate will have the call on 105.1 The GOAT, NEWRadioSportsNetwork.com, and 1051TheGOAT.com beginning at 1:15 p.m. with the pregame show followed by 1:30 p.m.

Rattlers Stumble in 10-1 Loss to River Bandits

The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers lost 10-1 to the Quad Cities River Bandits on Friday night at Neuroscience Group Field.  The River Bandits had eleven hits and took advantage of ten walks to hand the Rattlers their second straight loss.

Carter Jensen, who had four hits on Friday night, gave the River Bandits (25-30) the lead with a lead-off home run in the top of the third inning.

Quad Cities added to their lead in the fourth inning.  Wisconsin starter Will Rudy gave up a single and a walk to the first two batters he faced.  Spencer Nivens drove a three-run homer to right to end the night for Rudy.  The homer was the first of the season by Nivens.  It was also the twelfth homer the River Bandits have hit in ten games against the Timber Rattlers this season.

Jake Polancic took over for Rudy and loaded the bases on two walks and a single.  Polancic got the first out of the inning with a strikeout but walked the next batter to force in another run for the Bandits.  On top of that, Polancic left the game with an injury.

Stiven Cruz, the third Wisconsin pitcher of the inning, gave up a sacrifice fly to score the final run of the inning.  Cruz retired all five batters his faced in the game.

Wisconsin (34-21) got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth.  Jesús Chirinos hit a two-out, solo homer run to right field off Quad Cities starter Frank Mozzicato.  Chirinos has four homers this season.

That was it for the Wisconsin scoring on the night.  Mozzicato gave up a double to Jheremy Vargas before getting the final out of the fifth inning to qualify for his third win of the season.  Oscar Rayo tossed four scoreless innings of relief to close out the game for the Bandits.

Rattlers reliever Aaron Rund stretched himself out to a third inning of work after pitching a scoreless sixth and a scoreless seventh.  In the eighth, Brett Squires knocked in a run with a one-out double before Rund closed out the inning with back-to-back strikeouts.

The Quad Cities hitters weren’t done.  In the ninth, they added three more runs against reliever Bayden Root, who got the first out of the inning, issued a walk and gave up a double.  Consecutive RBI singles by Omar Hernandez and Jack Pineda made the score 9-1.  One last walk reloaded the bases and Wisconsin called on catcher Victor Torres to get the final outs.

Torres, who just joined the team earlier this week, got the second out on a sacrifice fly by Squires to account for the final run of the game.  He would get the final out on a foul pop.

There was good news for the Timber Rattlers on Friday night.  The second-place Cedar Rapids Kernels lost 6-0 to the Great Lakes Loons at Dow Diamond in Midland, Michigan.  That loss means the Timber Rattlers are still 2-1/2 games up on the Kernels in the first-half West Division raced with eleven games remaining as the Rattlers try to qualify for the postseason for the first time since 2016.

Game five of the series with Quad Cities is Saturday night.  Yujanyer Herrera (2-1, 4.43) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers.  Henry Williams (2-1, 3.56) is set to start for the River Bandits.  Game time is 6:40pm.

Max Meylor had another five-touchdown day, including three through the air in the win, as he threw for over 230 yards. Meylor's three touchdown passes were to three different receivers. Running back EJ Burgess rushed for just under 40 yards and four touchdowns.

The Blizzard are tied with the Frisco Fighters at the top of the Eastern Conference standings and the Pirates are two games behind in the standings in third place.

Rockers snap skid against Loggers

The Green Bay Rockers found themselves in the win column for the second time this season on Thursday with an 11-6 win over the LaCrosse Loggers.

The Rockers were buoyed by a five-run sixth inning after already holding a 5-1 advantage at the halfway point. Mateo Matthews delivered the big hit that inning with a three-run homer.

Sam Miller went 4-5 with a home run and four RBI to pace the Rockers' offense. Matthews, Jake Bold, and Luke Moeller also had multi-hit games.

The Rockers play the Loggers in LaCrosse again on Friday night at 6:35 p.m.

Late Wisconsin comeback falls short

The Quad Cities River Bandits spoiled a fine pitching performance from Wisconsin starting pitcher K.C. Hunt and another stellar offensive performance from Jadher Areinamo by beating the Timber Rattlers 5-3 on Thursday at Neuroscience Group Field.  An uncharacteristically sloppy Wisconsin defense committed a season-high four errors in the contest.

Hunt, making his first professional start, worked five scoreless innings for the Timber Rattlers (34-20).  He allowed three hits, walked none, and struck out five.  The only jam he was in was in the top of the fourth with consecutive singles opened the inning to put runners on first and third.  Hunt struck out the next batter for the first out, but a stolen base put runners at second and third.  Hunt struck out the next batter and escaped the inning on a spectacular defensive play by Areinamo at shortstop.

Then, Areinamo played a role in the Wisconsin run in the bottom of the fourth.  He singled, stole second, and went to third on an error.  Luke Adams drove in Areinamo with a single for the 1-0 lead.  Areinamo has 21 stolen bases in 23 attempts this season.

Quad Cities (24-30) tied the game with a two-out rally in the top of the sixth inning against reliver Chase Costello.  The first two Bandit hitters struck out.  Brett Squires kept the inning alive with a double.  Kale Emshoff tied the game with another double.

The River Bandits took the lead in the top of the seventh.  Tyler Wehrle, the Rattlers third pitcher of the game, had runners at the corners with one out with Jack Pineda at the plate.  Pineda hit a slow grounder to second.  The Timber Rattlers were able to get the force at second, but Pineda beat the throw to first to allow the runner from third to score the go-ahead run.

Wehrle got the first two outs of the top of the eighth inning before things went off the rails for Wisconsin.  Carson Roccaforte blooped a single into left-center and advanced on an error.  Jared Dickey hit a slow grounder to second for a single and a wild throw let Roccaforte score.  Dustin Dickerson followed with a high fly ball to left-center.  The ball hit the top of the fence and went out for Dickerson’s first home run of the season to give the Bandits a 5-1 lead.

The Timber Rattlers, who had won seven games with five last at bat victories in their last nine games going into Thursday’s game, tried to make another late comeback.  Terence Doston singled to start the eighth inning against Chazz Martinez.  Jheremy Vargas doubled to the corner in left and Doston scored when the ball was bobbled.  Areinamo singled, his third hit of the game, with two outs and drove in Vargas to bring the tying run to the plate.

Ben Sears was called into the game from the River Bandits bullpen, and he got the final out of the eighth and pitched a perfect ninth to earn the save and deny the Rattlers another comeback victory.

Areinamo went 3-for-3 with a walk, a run scored, a stolen base, and an RBI for the Rattlers on Thursday night.

In the first -half West Division playoff chase, the Timber Rattlers maintained their 2-1/2 game lead over the Cedar Rapids Kernels.  The Kernels lost 8-3 to the Great Lakes Loons in Michigan on Thursday night.  The Rattlers and Cedar Rapids both have twelve games remaining in the first half.

The Timber Rattlers will turn their attention back to Quad Cities with game four of the series on Friday night at Neuroscience Group Field.  Will Rudy (1-4, 5.87) is set as the starter for Wisconsin.  Frank Mozzicato (2-4, 3.11) has been named as the starter for the River Bandits.  Game time is 6:40pm.

Local athletes honored with All-Conference honors

Area athletes were recently recognized for their superior seasons as the Packerland Conference announced their All-Conference teams.

The three co-Packerland Conference champions combined for 19 all-conference selections after they were announced late last month. Algoma led the way with seven selections, followed by six apiece for Kewaunee and Gibraltar. Sturgeon Bay and Southern Door each had four while Sevastopol garnered two. Oconto catcher Kyle Bowman was named the sport's All-Packerland Conference Player of the Year.

Local schools dominated the post-season awards in golf for the Packerland Conference.Finishing the conference slate with a string of victories, Kewaunee's Evan Maccaux won Player of the Year honors as a sophomore, in addition to his first-team honors. Conference champion Sturgeon Bay led all schools with two selections.

With two years left in her high school softball career, Macie Zimmerman is already making her mark. The Algoma pitching ace was named the Packerland Conference's player of the year last month, picking up a first-team nod as a pitcher along the way. She was one of seven Wolves players to pick up All-Packerland Conference honors.

The All-Packerland Conference soccer teams were announced with a relatively even split among the local sides. Sturgeon Bay placed six on the conference squads while Sevastopol/Gibraltar had five. The conference player of the year was Peshtigo's Audra Bauman.

Shoreland League: 'Guins fall to Bandits

The Algoma Penguins allowed nearly 30 baserunners in its 17-7 loss (seven innings) to Manitowoc on Wednesday night.

It was 6-0 before the Penguins could get on the scoreboard thanks to an Austen Dart RBI groundout and a Tyler Neinas run-scoring single to make it 6-2. The Bandits kept piling on runs, with another tally in the bottom of the fourth and four more in the fifth inning. The Penguins would chip away at the advantage in the seventh inning with five runs. Down 11-2, Jack Peterson drove in two runs with a double and Brayden Skenandor cleared the bases with a three-run home run later in the inning. The Bandits ensured there would be no comeback as they plated six runs in their half of the inning to end the game early.

Three Penguins players had at least two hits in the loss.

Rockers struggles continue in LaCrosse

The Green Bay Rockers have not been able to find their championship form from a year ago as they dropped to 1-7 on the season with an 11-7 loss to the LaCrosse Loggers on Wednesday.

The Rockers took an early lead thanks to a three-run third inning that saw Jake Bold slap an RBI single. They would lose the lead in the fourth inning but retake it in the sixth inning when a simple groundout turned into two runs because of an error. After the Loggers tied the game in the eighth, Luke Davis made the Rockers pay for their mistakes in the ninth with a walk-off grand slam.

Bold has two of the Rockers' five hits, posting two RBI along with Carson Hansen. Payton Mansfield delivered the biggest blow for the Rockers with a home run.

Rally Rattlers Win Late Again

The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers scored four times in the bottom of the eighth inning to rally from a 5-2 deficit for a 6-5 win over the Quad Cities River Bandits Wednesday afternoon at Neuroscience Group Field.  Luis Lara celebrated his return to the Wisconsin lineup with two hits and three RBI, including the go-ahead two-run single in the eighth.

Quad Cities (23-30) scored twice in the top of the second inning to grab the early lead.  Wisconsin starting pitcher Tate Kuehner walked the lead-off batter and gave up a double to begin the inning.  Spencer Nivens drove in both runners with a one-out single.

Kuehner didn’t give up much else for the rest of his outing.  The left-hander went six innings for the first time as a professional.  He allowed four hits, walked two, and struck out eight.  The eight strikeouts matched his single-game high as a pro.

The Timber Rattlers (34-19) needed help to get to Quad Cities starting pitcher Ben Kudrna.  Lara, who had been activated from the Wisconsin Injured List before Wednesday’s game after leaving a game against Beloit on May 18 with a lacerated finger, was at the plate with two outs and a runner at second when he hit a high fly ball to right.  However, Jean Ramirez never saw the ball of the bat and couldn’t find it.  The ball dropped in front of him for an RBI double for Wisconsin’s first run.

Matt Wood, who was 2-for-2 with two walks in the game as he moved his current hitting streak to eight games, tied the score with an RBI single in the bottom of the sixth.  Kudrna left the game after six innings with two runs allowed, three walks, and five strikeouts and his teammates put him in line for the win with a late power surge against the Wisconsin bullpen.

Ramirez lined the first pitch from Stiven Cruz into the corner in right for a double and an error on the play put Ramirez at third with no outs.  Cruz retired the next two batters on two pitches while keeping Ramirez at third.  There would be no keeping Ramriez at third through the end of the inning as Brett Squires hit a homer to right on a 1-2 pitch to give the River Bandits a 4-2 lead.

Carson Roccaforte extended the River Bandits lead to 5-2 with a lead-off homer in the top of the eighth.

Wisconsin rallied in the bottom of the eighth inning when Brandon Johnson took over on the mound for the River Bandits.  Luke Adams started the frame with a single with Wood drawing a walk.  One out later, Tayden Hall drew a walk to load the bases.  Eduarqui Fernández followed with a walk to force in Adams to bring Wisconsin to within 5-3.

Jheremy Vargas was next.  He lined a 1-2 pitch to left to drive in Wood to cut the deficit to one run and chase Johnson from the game.  That set up Natanael Garabitos to face Lara.

Garabitos got ahead of Lara with two quick strikes.  Then, Lara grounded the next pitch into right for a single.  Hall scored the tying run with Fernández beating the throw from Ramirez to score the go-ahead run.

Aaron Rund went out for the top of the ninth inning as Wisconsin’s third pitcher of the game and tossed a 1-2-3 inning to earn his first save in affiliated ball.  Rund closed out the game with a called strike three to seal Wisconsin’s fourth last at bat victory of their current homestand.  The Rattlers are 6-2 in the first eight games of this homestand with four games left at Neuroscience Group Field before they head out on the road to end the first half.

In the first-half West Division Playoff race, Wisconsin pushed their lead to two games over the Cedar Rapids Kernels.  The Kernels are scheduled to play a road game with the Great Lakes Loons tonight.

Game three of the series is Thursday night at Neuroscience Group Field.  K.C. Hunt (1-0, 4.50) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers.  Quad Cities has named Steven Zobac (2-4, 4.70) as their starter.  Game time is 6:40pm.

Wisconsin Hits Three Homers in 9-5 Win

The start of the game did not go well for the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers on Tuesday night at Neuroscience Group Field, but the finish was just fine for the home team.  The Quad Cities River Bandits scored three quick runs in the first inning.  The Rattlers, led by big offensive nights from Ram?n Rodríguez and Jheremy Vargas, stormed back from the early deficit to claim a 9-5 victory and maintain their position at the top of the West Division.

The River Bandits (23-29) jumped to a 3-0 lead in the first inning.  A walk and a catcher’s interference with one out set the stage.  Kale Emshoff ripped a double to left to score both runners.  Carson Roccaforte followed with an RBI double to right.

Wisconsin (33-19) responded with four runs after two outs in the bottom of the first.  Dylan O’Rae was hit by a pitch and Rodríguez walked with two outs.  Tayden Hall singled to right to score O’Rae.  Jesús Chirinos put the Rattlers in front with a three-run homer when he lifted a 3-2 pitch over the wall in left.

Quad Cities came back in the top of the second as they loaded the bases with one out.  Brett Squires singled to left to drive in the tying run with an error on the play allowing the go-ahead run to score.

The Timber Rattlers continued to use the long ball to retake the lead.  Vargas hit a lead-off homer in the bottom of the second.  Rodríguez put the Rattlers in front with a lead-off homer in the third.

O’Rae, who moved his current on-base streak to sixteen games earlier in the night, was hit by a pitch with two outs in the fourth inning.  Rodríguez followed with a double high off the wall in left to drive in O’Rae for a 7-5 lead.

Rodríguez started the Rattlers final rally in the seventh inning with a lead-off double, his third hit of the game.  Eduarqui Fernández doubled with two outs to knock in Rodríguez.  Vargas followed with his second double – and third hit of the game – to account for the final run of the game.

Wisconsin’s bullpen did their job as they tossed 5-1/3 scoreless innings.  Starting pitcher Mark Manfredi battled through the first three innings and retired the first two batters of the fourth.  Chase Costello, who picked up the win, got the final out of the fourth and pitched a scoreless fifth for 1-1/3 shutout innings with a strikeout.

Brian Fitzpatrick scattered four hits and struck out five over three innings.  He was also the beneficiary of a great defensive play by Rodríguez.  Jared Dickey started the sixth inning with a double with the Rattlers still up by two runs.  Dickey strayed too far from second with one out and Rodríguez fired down to Jadher Areinamo covering to pick Dickey off for the second out.  The next two batters reached on a walk and a strikeout before Fitzpatrick got the final out of the inning on a strikeout.

Bayden Root pitched a perfect ninth to close out the game.

Rodríguez was 3-for-4 with a homer, two doubles, a walk, two RBI, and three runs scored for the Rattlers.

In the first-half West Division race, Wisconsin maintained their 1-1/2 game lead over the second place Cedar Rapids Kernels.  Cedar Rapids defeated the Great Lakes Loons on the road 5-2 on Tuesday night.  There are fourteen games remaining in the first half of the season.

Game two of the series is Wednesday afternoon.  Tate Kuehner (2-1, 3.86) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers.  Ben Kudrna (2-4, 3.72) is set to start for the River Bandits.  Game time is 12:10pm.

Algoma, Gibraltar/Washington Island fall in sectional semifinals

The high school sports calendar for the 2023-2024 school year concluded on Tuesday with two local baseball teams falling short in their respective sectional semifinal matchups.

The Gibraltar/Washington Island Vikings could not get their bats going against the Pacelli Cardinals during Thursday's long afternoon sectional semifinal that ended in a 7-2 defeat. Pacelli ended up winning the sectional with a 15-0 win over Niagara in five innings to punch their ticket to the state tournament.

The Algoma Wolves remarkable run in the WIAA Division 4 tournament ended on Tuesday as St. Mary's Catholic won 7-3 in the sectional semifinal in Gillett. St. Mary Catholic fell to Bonduel in the sectional final 5-0.

Algoma and Gibraltar/Washington Island fight for state berth on NRSN

Two local teams will try to earn a spot in next week's WIAA State Baseball Tournament in Grand Chute on Tuesday as they compete in the sectional round.

Even higher stakes are in order for Tuesday afternoon as Gibraltar/Washington Island and Pacelli go against each other for the second year in a row, this time with a sectional final berth on the line. Tim Kowols will have the call from Rosholt on 105.1 The GOAT and NEWRadioSportsNetwork.com beginning at 12:15 p.m., followed by the first pitch at 12:30 p.m. The game's winner will face the victor of the matchup between Niagara and Three Lakes/Phelps at 4 p.m. If the Vikings reach the sectional final, 105.1 The GOAT and NEWRadioSportsNetwork.com will carry that game, too.

The Wolves will travel to Gillett for Tuesday's sectional semifinal to face St. Mary Catholic. The latter nipped Kewaunee in the second round en route to their own regional championship. First pitch is slated for 1:30 p.m. and will be carried on 104.1 WRLU and NEWRadioSportsNetwork.com with Paul Schmitt on the call.

Packers set date for first training camp practice, stockholders meeting

The Green Bay Packers will make a little history when the team and the stockholders convene for the first time this summer.

July 22nd will mark the first time the annual stockholders meeting will be held and the opening day of training camp. While the timing of the meeting is comparable, the earlier start to training camp is due to the team's visit to Brazil to kick off the season against the Philadelphia Eagles.

The first training camp practice will be at 10:30 a.m. on July 22, followed by the shareholders meeting at 3 p.m.

The Packers resume their OTAs this week.

Algoma alum Zastrow to be inducted into the Green Bay Athletics Hall of Fame

A former Algoma basketball star will be immortalized alongside her teammates at the Green Bay Athletics Department Hall of Fame ceremony later this month.

Sam Zastrow was part of the 2010-2011 Green Bay Phoenix women's basketball team that clinched the first Sweet 16 appearance in program history under head coach Matt Bollant. She scored her first points as a Phoenix that season in a 60-40 win against Utah and a season-high five points against Valparaiso. Her Phoenix career ended a few years later. She appeared in 26 games with one start, averaging 2.5 points and 1.3 rebounds per game.

As a member of the Wolves, Zastrow was a Three-time Packerland Conference Player of the Year and a First-team Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association Division 3 All-State pick as a junior and senior.

Rockers rained out

The Green Bay Rockers must wait another day to return to their winning ways.

Weather in the Madison area forced the Rockers to have their showdown against the Mallards postponed until June 27th, when it will be a part of a doubleheader.

The Rockers have just one win in seven tries this season, which includes a 7-5 loss to Mallards on Sunday. They will try to play again on Wednesday when they face the LaCrosse Loggers on the road.

Rockers tuned out by Mallards

The Green Bay Rockers were outhit 12-6 on a sun-splashed Sunday afternoon at Capital Credit Union Park, falling to the Madison Mallards 7-5.

The Rockers struck first when Mallards left fielder Liam Moreno misread a line drive to him, allowing the ball to get past him for a Logan Gregorio triple while two scored. A base hit later would make it a 3-0 game. The Mallards would score in the next four innings, doubling up the Rockers 6-3. The two teams traded runs in the ninth inning, with a solo shot from UW-Milwaukee product Carson Hansen being the other main offensive highlight for the Rockers, which dropped to 1-6 on the season with the loss.

The Rockers' Jackson Kline went 2-4 to lead the team in hits. The pitching staff struck out eight men but were marred again by seven walks and an error in the loss.

Glory teams split Sunday matches

The Green Bay Glory men continued their hot streak to start the schedule while the women's team ended their opening weekend with disappointment.

On the men's side, the Green Bay Glory shut out Chicago Ghost 2-0, extending their lead in the Heartland's Second Division by five points and its goal differential to +13.

The women were not as lucky, falling to Milwaukee Torrent on the road 2-0.

DCL Sunday Wrap: Sister Bay, Kolberg pick up wins

The end of the fourth weekend of the Door County League baseball slate was marked with a blow-out and a walk-off on Sunday.

The Sister Bay Bays scored 21 runs on 13 hits to cruise to an easy 21-9 win over the Egg Harbor Indians in Door County League baseball on Sunday at Egg Harbor Ball Park.

Austen Dart's single to left field capped off a three-run rally to help Kolberg get past Washington Island 8-7 on Sunday afternoon.

Sunday's games were similar to what was seen on Friday night when Maplewood topped Institute 12-0 in eight innings and Baileys Harbor walked off West Jacksonport 8-7.

Rattlers Rally Late But Fall Short to Fort Wayne

A dormant Wisconsin Timber Rattlers woke up in the eighth inning to make the Fort Wayne TinCaps sweat as the home team closed a four-run deficit to a single run in the bottom of the eighth inning Sunday at Neuroscience Group Field.  However, the TinCaps held on to hand the Rattlers a 5-4 loss with a Wisconsin native doing a lot of the damage to the Rattlers.

The teams traded solo home runs early in the game.

Jadher Areinamo ambushed a 3-0 pitch from Braden Nett with one out in the bottom of the first and cracked his third home run of the season deep to left-center to give Wisconsin (32-19) the lead.  Nett, who had been activated off the TinCaps Injured List before the game, was done after one inning.

Tyler Robertson hit a 3-2 pitch from Alexander Cornielle off the facing of the roof of the Left Field Lofts in the top of the second and Fort Wayne (23-28) had tied the game.

Cornielle worked a scoreless third and retired the first two batters of the fourth inning before he walked Robertson.  Griffin Doersching, a native of Greendale, Wisconsin, made Cornielle and the Rattlers pay for that walk when he hit a long homer to left to put the TinCaps up 3-1.

Fort Wayne added to their lead in the sixth inning.  Wisconsin reliever Patricio Aquino got the first out of the inning but gave up three straight singles to load the bases.  Aquino got the second out with a strikeout.  Then, he got a weak grounder to third off the bat of Homer Bush Jr.  However, the speedy Bush was able to beat the throw to first to drive in an insurance run.

Doersching struck again with a towering home run in the eighth inning.  The ball struck the scoreboard and blacked out a part of the board.  Doersching went 4-for-4 with two homers and three RBI for the TinCaps.  His second homer was costly to the Rattlers in more in the repair bill for the scoreboard because this would turn out to be the winning run for Fort Wayne.

Meanwhile, the TinCaps relievers were mowing down Timber Rattlers hitters.  After Areinamo’s homer in the first inning, Luke Adams reached on an error.  Wisconsin didn’t have another base runner until the eighth inning. Four Fort Wayne pitchers retired twenty Timber Rattlers in a row.

Eduarqui Fernández broke that streak when he drew a four-pitch walk from Joan Gonzalez to start the eighth inning.  Tayden Hall followed with a single.  Terence Doston doubled to score Fernández.  Jheremy Vargas was retired for the first out, but his groundout scored Hall and the Rattlers were down 5-3.

Dylan O’Rae kept the pressure on the TinCaps with a bloop single to left.  Doston held at third, but Robertson threw home and missed the cutoff man to allow O’Rae to move to second with the tying run.

David Morgan, the fifth Fort Wayne pitcher of the day, came in to face Areinamo and got a strikeout.  Adams was at the plate next and catcher Anthony Vilar was charged with a passed ball that let Doston score and the deficit was down to one run with O’Rae at third base.  Morgan would end the inning with a strikeout.

There was one final push for the Timber Rattlers to tie the game.  Matt Wood singled to lead off the bottom of the ninth.  Gregory Barrios pinch ran and stole second with one out.  Morgan would hold the lead for Fort Wayne with a strikeout and a game-ending popout.

The Timber Rattlers missed an opportunity to gain a game on second place Cedar Rapids in the first half West Division race.  Cedar Rapids lost 8-1 at home to the Lake County Captains on Sunday.  Wisconsin remains 1-1/2 games ahead of Cedar Rapids in the division with fifteen games left in the first half.

O’Rae extended his current on-base streak to fifteen games with his eighth-inning single.  He is 16-for-50 with thirteen walks and fifteen runs scored during his streak.

Wisconsin is off on Monday.  They return to action on Tuesday with the first game of a six-game homestand against the Quad Cities River Bandits at Neuroscience Group Field.  Mark Manfredi (2-1, 3.52) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers.  Game time is 6:40pm.

Glory men look to stay unbeaten in league play Sunday

The Green Bay Glory look to improve to 4-0 on Sunday when they travel to Waukegan, Ill. to face Chicago Ghost.

In their 4-0 win over Berber City on Sunday, the Glory would jump out to an early lead when, in the 11', Ethan Dietrich sent a shot across the goal past a diving goalkeeper Jack Strogen, that deflected off the right post into the goal. No more goals were scored in the first half, but the game hit an eleven-minute delay when a ball off the foot of William Smested, which came just after a whistle, caught the main referee in the head, leading to her needing medical attention. The kick earned Smeasted a yellow card when play resumed. The Glory struck early again in the second half when at the 49' Ethan Dietrich sent a corner kick in to Ben Omirnik, which Omernik headed into the back of the net for a two-nothing lead. The game would then hit its second long delay when a lightning strike nearby sent it into a nearly 45-minute weather delay. After the delay, Ethan Dietrich continued his big day, putting another goal in the back of the net in the 70's. Green Bay's scoring was not done yet, as Tommy Geocaris would put a goal into the net in extra time.

Kickoff is set for 6:30 p.m.

Egg Harbor hosts Bays on 105.1 The Goat Sunday

The Egg Harbor Indians will host the Sister Bay Bays in Door County League baseball on Sunday afternoon.

The Bays (3-0)  look to stay undefeated after downing Baileys Harbor A’s 14-3 under the lights in week 3, while the Indians (2-1) went up to Washington Island and edged the Islanders 8-6 last Sunday.

Tom Sawyer, Griffin Cole, and Chubbs Laughlin led the way for the Bays with two hits apiece, while Eric DeJardine scored three times in the win over the Islanders for Egg Harbor.

Currently, Sister Bay and Maplewood sit atop the league standings with a perfect 3-0 record while Egg Harbor is tied for second place with Kolberg with a 2-1 mark.

Paul Schmitt and Shelly Lau will have the call on 105.1 The Goat and NEWRadioSportsNetwork.com beginning at 1:15 p.m. with first pitch at 1:30 p.m. from Egg Harbor.

Rattlers Roll Back Into Win Column

The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers pounced on the Fort Wayne TinCaps early on the way to an 8-1 victory on Saturday night at Neuroscience Group Field.  Yujanyer Herrera allowed one hit over six innings and Jadher Areinamo was 4-for-5 with three RBI and a run scored to lead the Rattlers to the win and an extra cushion in the team’s playoff race.

The first four Timber Rattlers to bat in the bottom of the first inning singled and it led to a pair of runs for Wisconsin.  Dylan O’Rae and Gregory Barrios started the inning.  Areinamo followed with a single to left to drive in O’Rae.  Luke Adams reached on an infield single to load the bases.  Tayden Hall knocked in Barrios with a sacrifice fly to left for the 2-0 lead.

Areinamo and Adams combined to give Wisconsin (32-18) another run in the third inning.  Areinamo singled to start the inning.  Adams doubled to the corner in left and Areinamo raced home for a 3-0 lead.

Griffin Doersching put Fort Wayne (22-28) on the scoreboard in the fifth inning with a lead-off home run off Herrera.  Doersching’s blast was his fifth of the season and pulled the TinCaps to within 3-1.

That hit was also the only one allowed by Herrera.  He pitched six innings, walked four, hit one, and struck out five.  It was an excellent rebound performance for Herrera, who allowed nine runs on nine hits in three innings at South Bend on May 25.

There was a threat from the TinCaps in Herrera’s final inning.  The right-hander walked the first batter and hit the next batter.  Herrera got out of the jam with help from his defense.  First, he got Jay Beshears to ground into a 6-4-3 double play.  Then, Terence Doston made a leaping catch at the wall in left to rob Anthony Vilar of an RBI and extra bases to end the inning.

Wisconsin’s offense got going against in the sixth inning against Cole Paplham to score some insurance runs.  Doston walked with one out and O’Rae singled to put runners at the corners.  Paplham threw a wild pitch to allow Doston to score for a 4-1 lead.  Barrios would walk to put two runners on base.

Areinamo drove in both O’Rae and Barrios with a double for his fourth hit of the game to put the Rattlers up 6-1.

Wisconsin added two more runs in the seventh inning on an RBI double by Eduarqui Fernández and an RBI single by Jheremy Vargas.

Areinamo had a chance for five hits in the game when he stepped to the plate in the eighth inning with position player Anthony Vilar on the mound.  Areinamo lined a soft toss from Vilar to left by it was caught.

O’Rae was on base five times in the leadoff spot for Wisconsin.  He walked three times, singled twice, stole a base, and scored two runs.  O’Rae is currently on a 14-game on-base streak.

Two Timber Rattlers relievers closed out the game.  Stiven Cruz walked the first batter he faced in the top of the seventh before he retired the final six batters he faced, including four via the strikeout.  Aaron Rund allowed a two-out single in the top of the ninth but struck out two to seal the victory for the Rattlers.

There was good news in the playoff race for the Timber Rattlers from Cedar Rapids starting very early in the night.  The Lake County Captains scored ten runs in the top of the first inning and handed the Kernels an 11-3 loss.  The Kernels loss coupled with the Rattlers win means Wisconsin now leads the Cedar Rapids in the West Division by 1-1/2 games with sixteen games remaining in the first half.

The series finale is Sunday afternoon at Neuroscience Group Field.  Alexander Cornielle (3-1, 3.29) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers.  Fort Wayne announced Braden Nett (0-0, 11.12) as their starter.  Game time is 1:10pm.
