Wrestling round-up: Spartans' Georgel and Neubert battle for title Saturday

Six area wrestlers are still in line to bring back hardware from Madison as the Kohl Center host teams from across the state this weekend.

Two Luxemburg-Casco wrestlers still have a chance to stand on top of the podium after two days of the WIAA Individual State Wrestling Tournament in Madison. On the girls side, Kiley Georgel added a second-period pin of Sophia Peterson (Muskego-Girls) to her total to improve to 3-0 on the weekend at 185 pounds. For the boys, Carson Neubert won by major decision over Lincoln Flayter (Hartford Union) to clinch his spot in the grand march at 126 pounds. Blakelee Bastien can finish no worse than fourth place after dropping his semifinal match to Luke Kamish (New Richmond). Joseph Jeanquart (132 lbs) can still wrestle his way into a medal after winning his consolation round match.

Despite a close loss in the semifinals, Sturgeon Bay/Sevastopol's Spencer Madsen's weekend at the WIAA Individual State Wrestling Tournament will continue on Saturday. Madsen dropped a close decision to Gunnar Johnson (Gale-Ettrick-Tremp./Mel.-Min.) at 157 pounds for only his second loss of the season in the semifinal. He will get to wrestle for third place on Saturday. Tiani LeMieux's weekend ended soon than she would have liked as she suffered a second defeat by pin on Friday morning to eliminate her from the tournament.

Kewaunee's Mitchell Boeder remains in line for a medal after two days of the WIAA Individual State Wrestling Tournament in Madison. After earning pins in his first two matches, Boeder received one from Grant Mathews (Riverdale) to send him to the third-place match on Saturday.  Arianna Niemojuski narrowly missed a second chance at advancing, losing to Aubrey Hilton (Eau Claire North-Girls) by sudden victory.

Girls basketball round-up: Sevastopol, Kewaunee advance on NRSN

Two of the four area teams are still alive in the WIAA Girls Basketball Tournament after their regional semifinal matchups.

The Sevastopol Pioneers have earned themselves a Regional Final home game after handling the Wabeno/Laona Rebels 50-21 in Institue Friday night. On the other half of the bracket, top-seeded Gillett was knocked off by Florence, meaning the Sevastopol Pioneers will host a home game for the Regional Final.  You will be able to hear it on U102.1 and the New Radio Sports Network on Monday beginning at 5:45 p.m. with the pregame show followed by the opening tip at 6 p.m.

The Algoma Wolves' girls basketball team saw their season end Friday night in a 49-41 loss to Valders in the regional semifinal of the WIAA Tournament. The Vikings will travel to Kewaunee to face the Storm after they cruised past the Rockets of Cedar Grove-Belgium 65-46. Paul Schmitt and Eric Fischer will have the call on 104.1 WRLU beginning at 6:45 p.m. with the pregame show followed by opening tip at 7 p.m.

Phoenix women play Mastodons for conference title

A Horizon League Regular Season title is on the line Saturday afternoon at the Kress Events Center as the Green Bay Phoenix women's basketball team plays Purdue Fort Wayne.

The Phoenix women have been off since knocking off their in-state rivals Milwaukee last Saturday 68-45. A 17-0 run by the Phoenix made the game academic before the teams entered the locker room. Part of that run included Maddy Schreiber registering her 1000th point as a Phoenix, the 41st player in program history to accomplish the feat. Schreiber would end her day with a game-high 18 points, Jasmine Kondrakiewicz added 12 points, Jenna Guyer chipped in nine points, and Cassie Schiltz contributed eight.

The Mastodons were boasting a long winning streak themselves until they fell to Cleveland State earlier in February. The Mastodons beat the Phoenix in Fort Wayne 67-66. The Phoenix trailed by five at the break and could never recover in that game as the Mastodon's Lauren Ross led all scorers with 25 points. Jasmine Kondrakiewicz did her best to counter Ross' success with 20 points.

Tip-off is set for 1 p.m.

Five local wrestlers go undefeated on day one of state tournament

Several local wrestlers are still alive in their brackets after the first day of the WIAA Individual State Wrestling Tournament in Madison.

Kewaunee's Mitchell Boeder is well on his way to medaling at the WIAA Individual State Tournament after posting a pair of wins on Thursday. Boeder pinned Vadim Misiura (Cedar Grove-Belgium) in the first period and Jovan Lopez (Ozaukee) in the second period to earn to advance to Friday's semifinals. Arianna Niemojuski was not as lucky as she lost in her first match by injury default to Bella Roman (Ashland-Girls).

Sturgeon Bay/Sevastopol's Spencer Madsen continued his march to a podium finish in Madison with a win in the WIAA Individual State Wrestling Tournament on Thursday. Madsen registered a major decision against Isaiah Nowak (Coleman) in his lone match. Madsen has not dropped a match in the postseason, registering bonus points in every one. Tiani LeMieux ran into a tough customer during her tournament opener when Katelyn Nosbisch pinned her in the first period (Black River Falls-Girls).

Five of Luxemburg-Casco's seven qualifiers posted wins on the first day of the WIAA Individual State Wrestling Tournament on Thursday. On the girls side, Kiley Georgel did not need much help as she won her first two matches over Rayanah Yates (West De Pere-Girls) and Merin Yates (Merrill-Girls) to advance to the semifinals. Joining her from the boys side is Carson Neubert and Blakelee Bastien. Like Georgel, Neubert registered a pin and a tech fall en route to the semifinals, while Bastien posted a tech fall and a regular decision. Joseph Jeanquart and Logan Ellwanger both won their first match before falling in the quarterfinals. Mason Boulanger and Calvin Bohn each lost their first match in the tournament.

Phoenix men hold off Titans

A halftime deficit did not stop the Green Bay Phoenix men's basketball team from securing their fourth win of the season on Thursday night. They beat Detroit Mercy 75-71.

The Titans made Phoenix fans think their team was heading to a third straight loss before Green Bay rallied with a 10-3 run to make it a 33-30 deficit at halftime. Clutch shooting from Ryan Wade and Mac Wrecke and a strong defensive effort from C.J. O'Hara helped the Phoenix overtake their visitors and lead by as much as six points before settling on the final margin.  Jeremiah Johnson paced the Phoenix with 20 points while four other Phoenix players reached double figures, including Marcus Hall (14), Ben Tweedy (13), Mac Wrecke (12), and C.J. O'Hara (11).

The Phoenix men will hopefully dress more than eight players on their senior day this Saturday when they host Oakland in their regular-season finale at 6 p.m.

Gamblers fall to Phantoms in morning tilt

The Green Bay Gamblers look to bounce back Friday night after losing an early morning tilt in Youngstown on Thursday.

The Gamblers fell behind 2-0 after the first period following a 9:05 a.m. puck drop to coincide with the Phantoms' School Day festivities. Will Zellers' 35th goal of the season would cut the lead in half halfway through the second period, but Jakub Heš would extend the lead back for the Phantoms to lead them to the win. Leo Henriquez stopped 22 of the 25 shots he faced in goal in the Gamblers' loss.

The two teams have two more games this weekend, with a 6:05 p.m. puck drop set for Friday night and a 5:05 p.m. start slated for Saturday.

Phoenix men begin last homestand on Thursday

The Green Bay Phoenix men's basketball team will play its final home games of the season this week when they welcome the Horizon League's Detroit-area teams to the Resch Center.

After winning their first game since November on February 16th against Wright State, they dropped two competitive games against Robert Morris and Youngstown State last weekend. In their game against the Penguins on Sunday, Marcus Hall led the way with his 16 points, making it the second consecutive contest where he paced the Phoenix in scoring. Mac Wrecke and Ben Tweedy also reached double figures with 15 and 13 points.

Detroit-Mercy is the first of the Michigan teams to draw the ire of the Phoenix on Thursday. They come into the matchup with an overall record of 8-21, including a 4-14 mark in the Horizon League. On Saturday, Oakland comes to town boasting a mark of 10-8 in the Horizon League and 13-16 overall. Both teams are near the bottom in scoring in the Horizon League.

Tip-off for both games is set for 6 p.m.

Timber Rattlers Bring Wisconsin Frozen Pizzas to Life

Wisconsin is the “Frozen Pizza Capital of the World”.  Now, the state has a baseball team to call its own.  The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers have unveiled the Wisconsin Frozen Pizzas as a new identity for the team’s alternate arsenal.

People in the state of Wisconsin consume more frozen pizza than any other state in the Union (and probably the world) on a per capita basis.  Other fun facts behind selecting Frozen Pizzas as an alternate identity and Wisconsin’s claim on “Frozen Pizza Capital of the World”:

Five of America’s largest frozen pizza brands started in Wisconsin and are still headquartered here

Many popular grocery stores in the state carry up to 50 different brands of frozen pizza from all over the country

Wisconsin’s large cheese production, manufacturing know-how, and big appetites all contribute to its frozen pizza dominance.

The Frozen Pizzas will take the field for the first time on Saturday, July 12 in a game against the South Bend Cubs at Neuroscience Group Field.

The genesis of the Frozen Pizzas dates to 2021 when the Timber Rattlers hosted a Frozen Pizza Throwdown at Neuroscience Group Field to showcase over a dozen Wisconsin brands for fans of frozen pizzas.  The logo created for the event was popular enough to begin conversations about “Could this be an alternate identity?”  The answer was an emphatic and delicious “YES!”

The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers are one of the leaders in alternate identities for Minor League Baseball.  The Timber Rattlers have taken the field as the Wisconsin Brats, Los Cascabeles de Wisconsin, Lake Winnebago Shantymen, and Wisconsin Udder Tuggers over the years.

Make sure to keep your eyes on our social media channels, website, and team store for one more new alternate identity to be unveiled before the start of the 2025 season.

The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers open the 2025 season at home against the Cedar Rapids Kernels on Friday, April 4.  First pitch is scheduled for 6:40pm CDT.

Bucks topped by Rockets

The Milwaukee Bucks had their chances Tuesday night, but they fell just short on the road, 100-97, to the Houston Rockets.

A desperation three-pointer from 30 feet by Dame Lillard was off the mark, and the Bucks saw their four-game winning streak end.

Houston had a 30-25 lead after one quarter, but Milwaukee battled back to take a 59-57 lead into halftime.

The game had 14 lead changes and came down to the final minute as the Bucks missed opportunities to tie the game at the end.

Giannis Antetokounmpo led the Bucks with 27 points and 10 rebounds.  Lillard added 22 points, and Brook Lopez and A.J. Green scored 12 points each, but it was not enough.

Milwaukee (32-25) will return home to play the Denver Nuggets at Fiserv Forum on Thursday at 7 p.m.

Brewers top Cleveland as Misiorowski debuts

On Tuesday, the Milwaukee Brewers beat the Cleveland Guardians 9-6 in exhibition baseball in Arizona.

The Brewers scored six runs in the first two innings to give a nice cushion for top pitching prospect Jacob Misiorowski who made his debut on the mound.  The 6-7 inch hurler pitched one inning and topped 99 mph on his fastball.  He won by allowing two runs on one hit while walking three and striking out one.

Offensively, Milwaukee had eleven hits overall, with Cooper Pratt going 3 for 4 and having 3 RBIs in the win.  Jake Bauers hit a three-run home run, and Jared Oliva hit a solo homer for the Brewers, who improved to 2-2 in Cactus League play.

The Brewers will face the Los Angeles Dodgers at 2:10 p.m. Wednesday at American Family Field of Phoenix.

Boys basketball round-up: Lischka, Wolves boys shoot past Vikings on 105.1 The GOAT

High-scoring individual performers were the theme of many of the boys basketball games that took place across the area on Monday.

Parker Lischka ensured that the trip back to Algoma was a happy one as he led the Wolves past the Gibraltar Vikings on Monday night 85-43.

Drew Daoust stands just 23 points away from 3,000 points in his career after leading Southern Door past NEW Lutheran 83-37.

The Sevastopol Pioneers struggled to slow down the Oconto Blue Devils in a 73-49 loss on the road.

Sturgeon Bay could not catch up to Kewaunee in a 70-49 loss at home.

Luxemburg-Casco did its best to keep pace with Menasha, but in the end lost to Menasha 92-84.

Packers in Indianapolis for NFL Combine

The Green Bay Packers are in Indianapolis this week trying to discover diamonds in the rough at the NFL Combine being held at Lucas Oil Stadium.

Many of the activities for the over 300 prospects begin later this week on Thursday, but meetings are already taking place. One of those meetings had the Packers making headlines as they reportedly proposed that the "tush push" be banned during gameplay. The play call made popular by the Philadelphia Eagles has been the target of criticism in recent years, though the Packers levied the harshest critique with the request.

Below is the schedule for the NFL Combine

Thursday, Feb. 27 (3 p.m. to 8 p.m. ET): Defensive linemen, linebackers

Friday, Feb. 28 (3 p.m. to 9 p.m. ET): Defensive backs, tight ends

Saturday, March 1 (1 p.m. to 9 p.m. ET): Quarterbacks, wide receivers, running backs

Sunday, March 2 (1 p.m. to 5 p.m. ET): Offensive linemen

REPORT: Northern Illinois set to join the Horizon League in 2026

An old UWGB rivalry could be reignited as soon as the 2026-2027 season.

First reported by Action Network's Brett McMurphy and collaborated by other sources, Northern Illinois will begin play in the Horizon League in most sports beginning with the 2026-2027 season. The Huskies previously announced they would move from the Mid-American Conference to the Mountain West Conference for football. They still need a home for their gymnastics and wrestling programs because they are not offered in the Horizon League.

Green Bay and Northern Illinois were longtime rivals in the Midwest Conference before the Huskies bolted for the MAC. The men have a record of 24-6 against the Huskies while the women have a tighter record at 13-13.

Phoenix men come up short in Youngstown

A back-and-forth game swung in favor of the home team at the end as the Green Bay Phoenix men's basketball team fell to Youngstown State Penguins 81-77.

The Phoenix men had leads of seven points in the first half and six points in the second half, only to see the Penguins whittle it down and take small leads throughout the game. The Penguins' final margin of victory marked their largest lead against the Phoenix. While the two teams traded large runs in the first half, an 11-2 rally by the Penguins ended up being the fatal one for the Phoenix, which lost its second straight game. Marcus Hall led the Phoenix with 16 points, Mac Wrecke came off the bench to pour in 15 points, and Ben Tweedy contributed 13. Nico Galette and Gabe Dynes combined to score 40 points to lead the Penguins past the Phoenix.

The Resch Center will be the site of two Phoenix games this week, with the men hosting Detroit Mercy on Thursday and Oakland on Saturday. Both games tip off at 6 p.m.

Gamblers double up Steel

The Green Bay Gamblers scored two goals in every period of its 6-3 road win over the Chicago Steel on Sunday afternoon.

Down 1-0, Will Zellers and Elliot Gulley scored the next two goals to give the Gamblers a short-lived lead. Trailing 3-2 early in the second period, the Gamblers scored the following four goals to earn the victory thanks to tallies by Kolin Sisson, Zach Wooten,

Geno Carcone, Egor Shilov, and Zellers. Wooten and David Green each had two assists in the win. Leo Henriquez was stellar in the net, stopping 29 of the 32 shots he faced.

The Gamblers wrap up the month with games in Youngstown on Thursday and Friday.

Phoenix women throttle Panthers, men take on Penguins

The Green Bay Phoenix women's basketball team used a 29-6 run in the second quarter to topple their in-state rival Milwaukee 68-45 on Saturday.

The game was close at the end of the first quarter, thanks to some timely threes from the Panthers. Schiltz's two three-pointers placed her in third place all-time on the three-pointer list, tying her with Natalie Berglin. The win sets the stage for a winner-take-all showdown against Purdue Fort Wayne next Saturday.

On Sunday, the Phoenix men will try to bounce back from their loss to Robert Morris with a matinee showdown against Youngstown State. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m. In Friday's action, the Phoenix men could not come up with enough stops in a 94-85 loss to Robert Morris. The defeat spoiled a career-high for Marcus Hall, who registered 29 points to complement Jeremiah Johnson's 17 points and C.J. O'Hara's 12 points.

Area sends eight wrestlers to state meet

Door and Kewaunee counties will be well represented at next weekend's WIAA State Wrestling Tournament after eight local wrestlers qualified at Saturday's sectional meets.

The Luxemburg-Casco wrestling team found themselves on top of two separate podiums at Saturday's Fond du Lac Sectional, with four others qualifying for next weekend's state meet. Carson Neubert (126 lbs.) and Blakelee Bastien (144 lbs.) won their respective weight classes, going a combined 6-0 with a pin and a technical fall apiece. Joseph Jeanquart (132 lbs.), Mason Boulanger (150 lbs.), Logan Ellwanger (167 lbs.), Calvin Bohm (285 lbs.) are also heading to Madison after taking second place in their respective weight classes.

Kewaunee's Mitchell Boeder had a quick Saturday en route to another date in Madison next weekend after claiming the sectional championship in Valders. Boeder had three pins on Saturday, with only one of them reaching the second period to capture the crown at 285 pounds.

With more than 50 wins under his belt this season, Sturgeon Bay/Sevastopol's Spencer Madsen will have the opportunity to add his total in Madison after winning the Seymour Sectional Saturday. Madsen did not need the full six minutes in any of his three matches, winning by pin in his first match before earning technical falls in his final two bouts to win the title at 157 pounds. Zak Wrobel, Ethan Denamur, and Harry Schartner were each able to wrestle a second match before bowing out in the consolation rounds.

Two Southern Door wrestlers battled their way into medal contention, but not high enough to extend their season to next weekend's state tournament in Madison. Clark LeFevre (120), Ethan Alexander (138), and Lance Veeser (165) all recorded at least one win on the day, battling their way through wrestlebacks to give them a chance in the third-place match to punch their ticket to the state tournament. All came up just short in their final match of the day.

Gamblers play Sunday matinee

The Green Bay Gamblers look to rebound from a tough weekend when they head south of the Cheddar Curtain for a matchup against the Chicago Steel on Sunday afternoon.

The Gamblers lost their games to the Madison Capitols by scores of 8-5 and 8-1 last weekend. The team has lost four of their last five games, including a 2-1 defeat to the Steel earlier in the month at the Resch Center. The Gamblers sit in fifth place with 48 points, 15 points higher than the Steel.

Speaking of the Steel, they are reeling after their own weekend sweep by Youngstown after winning their first three games of the month.

Several area girls wrestlers are not done with their seasons after successful nights at the WIAA Menasha Sectional.

First-time wrestler Jakayla Steinhorst battled into the second period of her opening and only match of the evening.

Sturgeon Bay/Sevastopol's Tiani Lemieux's abbreviated season was extended another week after she took second place in Friday's WIAA Girls Wrestling Sectional in Menasha. Lemieux improved her record to 10-2 on the season with three pins in her four contested matches at 145 pounds. She was pinned by Ava Armatti (Neenah) before wrestling her way back into second place. Izzy Andreae and Lanie Brauer each only had one match, but they battled into the second period before having their season end via a pin.

A loss in the title match did not come back to haunt Kewaunee's Arianna Niemojuski as she clinched a spot in next weekend's girls wrestling state tournament after a second-place finish in Friday's Menasha Sectional. Niemojuski secured two pins at 152 pounds before losing to Brooke Hansen (Wrightstown) by a 3-0 decision in the title match. She advance to the state tournament via no contest against Caitlyn Popp (Chilton/Hilbert).

Two Southern Door girls wrestlers came painfully close to qualifying for next week's state tournament after falling in the second-place match at the Menasha Sectional on Friday. Nora LeFevre won two of her contested matches at 107 pounds, but getting pinned by Irelyn Woolhether (Campbellsport) in the second round cost her a chance at Madison as she lost via no contest in the second-place match. Sydney Turner also came up empty in the second-place match after winning her first two matches of the day. Portia Hah and Attyson Wilson suffered second-period defeats by pin in their only matches of the night.

Things looked dire early as they struggled to get the offense going, falling behind by 11 points early after going the first several minutes without a shot made from the field. That's about when freshman guard Ben Tweedy took over, scoring nine points during a 12-0 run that helped give the Phoenix a 37-31 lead at the break.

Tweedy would tighten the Phoenix's grip on the game in the second half en route to a 27 point game.  Marcus Hall pitched in with 15 points while Preston Ruedinger added 14 points and Ryan Wade contributed 11. Solomon Callaghan paced the Raiders with 21 points.

Kiley Georgel's championship at 185 pounds led the way for the Luxemburg-Casco girls wrestling team at the Wrightstown Regional on Friday night. Georgel only had one contested match to worry about and made the most of it, pinning Rayanah Yates (West De Pere) in three minutes. Jakayla Steinhorst split her two contested matches at 107 pounds to take second place. Daoust enters the matchup with 2837 points and is on track to eclipse 3000 points during the final week of the regular season.

The Phoenix held a five-point lead before the Norse went on a 9-0 run that proved to be enough for them to hold on. Kewaunee School District sets dates for referendum open houses

Kewaunee School District officials want you to check out the current facilities and ask questions before you head to the polls this spring. Earlier this year, the Kewaunee School Board approved a resolution authorizing the issuance of general obligation bonds not exceeding $24.5 million to fund improvements to its facilities. The referendum aims to address the growing needs of its 3K, 4K, and Kindergarten programs while moving the eighth grade to underutilized space in the high school, expanding its agricultural building, and renovating its locker rooms, support spaces, kitchen, cafeteria, and its visual arts and performing arts classroom. Kewaunee School District Superintendent Scott Fritz said ahead of the school board vote in January that this referendum looks to accomplish some of the projects left on the cutting room floor when the district went to voters for its last capital referendum in 2015 for $16.2 million. Fritz added that with climbing costs, this is the time to start the work.

The district has scheduled two open houses: March 12th from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. and March 18th from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. The referendum question will appear on the April 1st spring election ballot alongside the races for state Supreme Court, state superintendent, and municipal seats.

Saturday was worth the fight in the snow for the Gibraltar girls basketball team as they beat Southern Door 52-47 in Brussels.

Gibraltar's Mikala Gorham's eight points and Southern Door's Ashlyn Delfosse's 14 points ensured that the Vikings and the Eagles entered the locker room tied at 25 points a piece. The difference would be Gorham in the second half as she erupted for 14 more points to end the afternoon with 22 points for the Vikings. In their 71-39 win, the Phoenix women trailed 15-13 after the first quarter, but they allowed nine total points over the next two quarters en route to their 14th straight win. Thanks to four three-pointers, Maddy Schreiber paced the Phoenix with 18 points off the bench. Three other Phoenix players reached double figures, Natalie McNeal scoring 13 points, Luxemburg-Casco's Cassie Schiltz chipping in 12 points, and Bailey Butler adding another 11 points. Thanks to more than 2,000 fans in attendance, the Phoenix honored breast cancer survivors and raised thousands of dollars for a local cancer-related organization.

The Phoenix men's losing streak hit 20 games with an 89-74 loss to Purdue Fort Wayne. An early lead disappeared when the Mastodons went on an 18-7 run fueled by Phoenix fouls and clutch shooting. Jeremiah Johnson led the Phoenix with 20 points and seven rebounds. Marcus Hall contributed 13 points before fouling out, and Ben Tweedy tallied 11 points in the loss.

Peterson's goal enough to make fur fly, not Gamblers win

The Green Bay Gamblers' Lukas Peterson delivered the key goal, but the Chicago Steel scored enough to leave the Resch Center with the 2-1 win.

The Gamblers were trailing 1-0 in the third period when Peterson scored against Steel netminder Jack Parsons, causing thousands of stuffed animals to hit the ice on Teddy Bear Toss night. The joy would not last as the Steel's Reid Conn gave his team the eventual winning goal just over 2 minutes later.

Gavin Moffatt took the loss for the Gamblers, stopping 23 of the 25 shots he faced.

The third period was especially painful for Gamblers fans as came with the Roughriders pulling their goalie and playing for over a minute with an empty net. After a scoreless overtime, the shootout went nine rounds before Amine Hajibi ended it with a goal after securing two assists in regulation. Leo Henriquez took the loss despite stopping 32 of 35 shots.

A 16-5 edge in the second quarter proved to be the difference for the Green Bay Phoenix women's basketball team as they toppled Youngstown State 58-47.

Similar to their first meeting, the Penguins proved to be a tough team to put away. They weathered a 14-2 first-quarter run by the Phoenix to enter the second quarter trailing 17-13. The Phoenix's defense stood tall in the second quarter, only to see the Penguins chip away at the advantage in the third quarter. Packers' Sharpe gets HOF call

More than 30 years after playing his final game for the Green and Gold, the Green Bay Packers' Sterling Sharpe will finally be enshrined in Canton.

Sharpe became the 29th member of the Packers to be elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame when he officially got the call on Thursday night, joining Jared Allen, Antonio Gates, and Eric Allen in the Class of 2025. Sharpe had long been looked at as a glaring omission from Canton, with his brother and HOF Tight End Shannon Sharpe pointing out his place in football lore despite being the second-best pass catcher in the family. A first round draft pick of the Packers, Sharpe made 595 receptions for 8,134 yards and 65 touchdowns in his career. Per Packers.com, he is one of only three players in NFL history with those numbers through seven seasons.

Sharpe will be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in August.

Board Approves Football Qualifying & Seeding Changes and Other Fall Sports Changes

The Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association Board of Control approved recommendations by the fall coaches’ advisory committees, including a plan that replaces the 11-player and 8-player football playoff qualifying and seeding system, at its February meeting today.

The Board voted to support the plan created by the Wisconsin Football Coaches Association at the recommendation of the Football Coaches Advisory Committee, reflecting a shared commitment to improving the football playoff selection and seeding process.

Prior to the 2025 season, teams will be divided equally in seven divisions based on enrollment and application of the performance factor for 11-player football programs. Teams will qualify and be seeded for 11-player and 8-player football according to a ranking point system. Programs earn points for each win based on the division of their opponents (Tier 1) of all games. In addition, teams will be rewarded points for each Tier 1 victory of their defeated opponents for all games played (Tier 2). The sum of each tier is divided by the total number of games played. The total points calculated for each tier is added to determine a team’s total point value for ranking within its own division.

The four teams with the highest total points in each division are designated the top seed in the four groupings. Subsequent seeded teams will be added to the groupings in each division based on the nearest expected travel to higher-seeded teams. A detailed summary of the playoff qualification and seeding plan is available on the WIAA website.

“We commend the Wisconsin Football Coaches Association leadership in conjunction with the WIAA Football Coaches Advisory Committee on their communications with our staff and the football coaches across the state on this redesigned qualification and seeding process,” WIAA Executive Director Stephanie Hauser said. “They provided tutorials and welcomed feedback from coaches and member schools.

“This process is a reflection of WIAA’s mission to be responsive to its membership and make key decisions about programs, rules, and eligibility with transparency among all stakeholders,” she continued “The WIAA Board of Control and WIAA staff support this new qualification and seeding process and will continue working collaboratively to enhance its procedures, ensuring greater efficiency and the best service possible for its member schools.”

Another football coaches’ recommendation receiving Board approval expands the 8-player football tournament bracket to 32 teams in 2025. The 8-player season will begin the same week as 11-player football to accommodate for the added round of the playoffs.

Two recommendations by the volleyball coaches were approved impacting the Tournament Procedures, effective in 2025. The highest seeded team will be considered the home team during the Tournament Series. At pre-determined sites when equally seeded teams are playing, the first school alphabetically will be considered the home team, unless a team is playing on their own court, which will constitute the host being declared the home team.

In addition, each participating team will be permitted a maximum of 18 players in uniform for each game of the Tournament Series, an increase from 15. The change does not impact the total of 22 team personnel permitted on the bench.

The sport of tennis had seven coaches’ recommendations approved. Four of those address seeding protocol at the subsectional level. The actions add another criterion, establishes clarity and defines a prescribed criteria order for the seeding process. Following head-to-head criteria, results and scores against common opponents will be applied, followed by results versus indirect opponents. In situations when two or more players are tied after applying the criteria, a random draw will now determine the respective seeds.

Another tennis Tournament Procedure ratified by the Board revises language to state a singles player or doubles team in Division 1 must play a minimum of six matches at any flight during the regular season to be entered in the subsectional tournament at Flights 1, 2 and 3 only. Singles and doubles teams in Division 2 must play a minimum of five matches at any flight during the regular season to be entered in the subsectional tournament at Flights 1, 2 and 3 only.

Other Board decisions impacting tennis included prohibiting smart watches or other communication devices on the court, unless approval is provided for medical purposes, and adjusting the tournament schedule in years Memorial Day lands on the Monday of subsectionals, which now may be scheduled that week on either Tuesday or Wednesday.

Two fall sports had one coaches’ recommendation approved by the Board. Permitted headgear language will be added in the cross country regulations consistent with the track & field regulations. In golf, schools will now be permitted to conduct a practice round at the regional tournament site during the regular season on nonschool days.

Two officials advisory committee recommendations were approved. Beginning in 2025-26, yellow cards in girls lacrosse will no longer be reported to the WIAA office, and swimming & diving officials will allow black pants to be worn as a uniform option.

Five fast-tracked conference realignment plans were ratified by the Board for implementation in 2025-26. Lourdes Academy, will be moved from independent status into the Eastern Wisconsin for girls tennis, and Grantsburg will move into the Heart O’ North Conference after participating as an independent. Martin Luther and St. Augustine Prep will both transition from independent status to the Woodland Conference in boys volleyball, and a proposal by Tomah was approved to merge the Mississippi Valley and Coulee Conferences to form a new boys Western Wisconsin Hockey Conference.

Other action by the Board included approvals of the procedural monthly general fund financial statements, fall sports financial statements, the deferred liability fund statement and general fund payments.

Additional topics of discussion included staff reports on prospective Constitutional amendments, the status of the 2024-25 football-only and lacrosse conference realignment process, upcoming Advisory Council and Board of Control elections, progress on development of a foundation, and continued efforts to recruit and retain licensed officials. Other topics of discussion included a review of competitive balance performance factor classification, plans for the 2025 Annual Meeting in April, status of the 2025 Scholar Athlete program in May, updates on the Student-Athlete Leadership Team and recognition of the effort and contributions of Tom Shafranski, who is retiring from the executive staff on Feb. 7.

The Board observed a presentation by the Calendar and Contact Committee, and it received liaison reports from Dan Rossmiller of the Wisconsin Association of School Boards, Paul Manriquez of the Department of Public Instruction, and Brittany Spencer Grant of the Wisconsin Athletic Directors Association.

The WIAA, as defined by its Constitution, is a voluntary, unincorporated, and nonprofit organization. The membership oversees interscholastic athletic programs for 513 senior high schools and 36 junior high/middle level schools in its membership.
